Title: Symphony of the Night Interview w/ Jeremy Bluastein
Post by: Dongled on January 12, 2023, 08:16:59 AM
Hey everyone, welcome to 2023! Hope you're doing well. Today I have for you an interview I did with Jeremy Blaustein, the translator/localizer who worked on Symphony of the Night. I learned a lot of new information about the creation of the english script...how Lord of the Rings and Vonnegut inspired things like Legion and some of the weapons and items in the game...as well as the official confirmation that Malreaux's "What is a Man?" line was directly used. We talk about how little Konami was involved in the translation in addition to the time Blaustein was given to translate the entire game (3 months!) It's a pretty cool interview filled with lots of stuff that's never been revealed as he's never been specifically only interviewed about this game, his second work with Konami. Enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4iJm5ZrkIxE (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4iJm5ZrkIxE)

Got this saved for later. Blaustein's a pretty cool dude and I dig his work (SOTN, MGS, SH2).

How'd you end up getting ahold of him for the interview? That's something I need to keep in mind for future vids...."Oh right, I can probably just ask devs/writers this shit".

I saw him posting on Twitter about Snatcher and was like, OOH! This dude is the guy who wrote the translation/localization for SotN! I asked him if he'd be up for answering questions and he said sure. I DMed him and asked if he would be ok with me recording our conversation, he said sure. I explained I would be using it for Youtube. Initially he was kinda wishy washy on whether or not I could use the recorded audio but ultimately he agreed to it.

Discover and preserve as much CV history as you can, right? There's still much out there that is enigmous.

Honestly? Yes. Konami won't do it themselves, so it falls to people like us and places like Shmupulations to uncover this kind of stuff.

That's honestly awesome that he was down for something like this. I have to keep myself open to this kind of thing and never think to (since I lean more towards the game lore).

I'll never forgive this guy for butchering Orlok and mislabeling Cthulhu.
