I'm honestly quite surprised my motorola w315 can handle the game, best cheap $50 walmart phone I ever got!

I'll be getting it.

That is suprising. Especially considering my nearly three year old Motorola V505 can handle it AND Doom RPG with ease. :-X

Too bad I won't pay for cell phone games (Actually, it's not). I will only find the .jar files online and then send them to my cell phone via Bluetooth, since I refuse to pay for what I can get for free. ;)

EDIT: Oh, you said it CAN handle it. That's great then. :)

I should read the posts more carefully. Heh heh. :P

I dont' see my phone on that list. I got that new Verizon Chocolate, and it's not compatible with ANYTHING!  >:( So I guess unless Verizon decides to carry the game in their VCast store, I'm SOL. What a gyp.

Haha. That's because the LG Chocolate is a chick's cell phone. I'm just kidding. That's too bad that Verizon is so restrictive on what works and doesn't work on their cell phones. :(

For example, Bluetooth file transfer is still crippled on most, if not all, Verizon cell phones. That's just bullshit in my opinion. If I want to make my own ringtone and send it to my cell phone, I should be able to. If I want to take a picture/video and send it back to my PC or PDA, I should be able to. That should be standard acrossed all Bluetooth enabled cell phones. Screw Verizon! >:(

I'm kind of excited about this one. What really got my attention was the music, which seems quite decent, and also, the fact that the game starts out in Eternal Night, the forest from Lament of Innocence. :3

Can't wait!

All the videos on this game show just how much of a P.O.S. it is. It looks worse that some of the most generic Game Maker games I have seen. Can't believe this is an official Konami release. And who is this red-headed hero? Most likely doesn't have a name or storyline to go with him. And I like how the character looks 8-bit, but he battles 32 bit sprite rips from SotN. Level design? Nope, none here.

Quick things:

All verizon cell phones run on BREW, not JAVA.  Unless this game gets ported you'll have no luck.

There's also multiple versions of this game, the one on the website is running at low resolution.  It will look nicer on phones with 240x320 screens or better.

Yup. His name's Desmond Belmont. His sisters are Dolores, and Zoe. They're against a group called the Order of Shadows which are nut-jobs that wish to revive Dracula hoping he'll reward them with power and mostly immortality. The game starts off in the Eternal Night, which was the Forest where the history of the Belmonts vs Dracula originated when Leon faced off with Walter. I think it has potential.

Update: Hopefully we'll get a news update about this. I've got a new Motorola V3M (from Verizon, ugh) so I can take some shots without it looking crappy.

Dunno how I feel about getting a game that can't be backed up, but oh well!

I've got the game at 7:56 PM - I've been sick today but stumbled outta bed and saw it was available on me phone - only $7.99 - less than I had feared.

I took a bunch of pictures/impressions. I read the Wired review after having played it a bit, but my impressions are really pretty favorable. Considering what you can expect out of a cell phone, it's pretty good. It's not especially challenging, but it seems to

EDIT: I've already finished the game (12:35 my time). Blah, it's quite short.

The game is VERY short (I didn't start playing until maybe an hour or two after getting it; I think my total time was 3 hours) and has very little going on. That said, it was only $8...it's got good art and music, performs decently (hated the controls during fights though), and will keep anybody occupied longer than a movie will, heh.

Wow that really must be short... 3 hours... >_>

Oh well.

Was there really much to collect through that game, in the terms of items and stuff like that??

This doesn't include my thoughts (argh, my right hand) about the control system yet, but it does contain some of the details of the game.

I've been writing out the stats for each level as well, but didn't include those to keep the file pretty short.

Well, then...here it is, the day after release (maybe 12 hours after):

Aside from that, very good graphics, near sprites, and pretty cool. Better than most cell phone games I've played.

Get it Now -> What's New

second from the top on the day I got it
top billing

By the way, the keypad is the way to go, at least on the V3m. Ended up quitting out of boss fights TWICE using the little button ring.

Anyhow, the game's better than I had thought. It's still "just a mobile game," which means it's not really even on a level with a GBA title. That said, I'm still trying to figure out how to really beat it...that'd be a spoiler though. See the FAQ for details:

http://castlevania.classicgaming.gamespy.com/oos/cvoos-faq-.02.txt

# of times "beaten" the game = 3

I'm really confused right now . . . I've got the Sprint Sanyo SCP 3100 phone, which shows up on the list on the left.  But every time I try to get the game it tells me that my phone doesn't support it.

Anybody else have this problem?

I apologize for the double post.  I just sent Konami Mobile an e-mail regarding the limited availability of Order of Shadows.  If you're a Sprint subscriber, I've asked for a list of phones that can support Order of Shadows.  I'll post the reply as soon as I get word back.

That's why you can edit, if you feel bad about double posting. But that is rather weird how your phone wouldn't fit having the game...

Also, since I live in the middle of no service. I'll be having to wait till Monday to get it! yay. : P

Has anyone actually beaten this thing yet--and gotten the good ending?
Title: Re: CellPhoneVania
Post by: Ed Oscuro on October 01, 2007, 01:07:23 PM
Lately I spent some time with Contra, which was more fun in the end than I had initially thought.

I've tried Castlevania a number of times - I've beaten the game on Hard five times, using unlimited items four of those times (which makes a playthrough about 30 minutes, maybe less), and I have no idea what I might need to do. I'm thinking it's in the style of HoD where you need to have the right combination of items equipped, but there's only one slot for "equipping" things - you can put a food item, magic, or a subweapon there, and the main weapon slot should probably always have the Vampire Killer - I don't imagine killing Drac with the flame or leather whips is going to work.

What's bad is that the game threw in all those useless items which plague Igavania games; there's no reason why I should have a 12.5% or 33% health recovery item, none. The weapons are not only useless, but the descriptions have me scratching my head; the Lightning Hammer is described as "nearly indestructible" and the throwing axe is described as "able to cut through stone," although that just means it can go up through a floor. Of course, so can Desmond's head.

So I really don't know what to do, and I fear that I'd have to try killing Drac with every last item. That might not even work. After you defeat him his room is sealed off; I've tried throwing everything at that door to no avail.

There are actually not too many gaffes in the game - at least in the early version I downloaded. It's possible they have updated the game, but every time I try to check for updates to games with my phone it fails (although I can view the list to buy new ones, whee).

My major complaints with the game: terrible story and worthless cutscenes; Meteor often impacts on the ceiling above the room you're in, thus wasting your item; no invincibility time means you're juggled by enemies all the damn time; some enemy hitboxes are terrible.

There are plenty of great design decisions in the game, however, including the admittedly great keypad control scheme, automatic detection of music mode (also lacking a bug in Contra where music can go crazy or hang even after quitting the game, leaving your cell emitting a horrible long BRAAAAAAW noise), and it's a pretty ambitious game for roughly half a meg.

I actually just developed a theory that could possibly be blown way out of the water by what you say next...

SPOILERS (maybe):

Have you tried following Dolores and Zoe back to the mansion after they lead you to the inner sanctum (where you fight Krause)?  They mention something about maybe finding stuff back at the mansion, so...perhaps that's a clue.  Also, did you happen to notice the cage/grating near the entrance to the inner sanctum (right after you fight Medusa)?  I'm wondering if maybe that isn't a path to something else...maybe this stuff opens up AFTER you fight Dracula...?  No idea.

Of course, highlight for wall of text.

Aha, a fellow traveler slogging through this business! Yes, that sounds like an idea. I guess I'd better follow your lead and black out OMG SPOILRZ:

No, the grating doesn't seem to open up after beating Dracula, but I should try following those two after that point you mentioned. This makes me realize that I've been ignoring clues in the conversations - I'll have to play through the game again to see exactly where they said that - I haven't found the text all that memorable, and I think in terms of "where is the next boss" anyhow. I'll check it out, but I don't think that is the answer.

Yes indeed, good sir.  I think that this game has the possibility of achieving "mediocre" status--if only I could get the blasted good ending.

Well, that's a bit harsh, and I don't find the game all that terrible for what it is (in fact, I kinda like it), but...meh.

SPOILERS!!!!exclamation point!!!!:

Pretty much the sisters drop the hint right when you find the entrance to Rohan's inner quarters (a little bit after the Medusa fight).  I, too, have a hard time remembering what exactly was said (with the exception of the admittedly creative inclusion of Rinaldo's descendant, but I've said that already).  Um...hmm.  I'm beginning to wonder if maybe the ending just isn't a segway into some sort of sequal/new build, in that case.  I really wish one of the devs would drop a hint or two...

Yeah, I'm pretty much in the same boat.  No updates for me.

That said, here's another idea...

SPOILERS:

After you beat Krause, he mentions that Dracula is resurrected due to Desmond spilling his blood.  Later, when you fight Dracula, he says something similar and then quickly changes the subject/avoids the issue.  It's almost like Dracula is mocking Desmond/the player for killing Krause...and maybe that's the key.  Maybe there's something that a person can find that can somehow stop Krause without killing him in order to trigger a real battle with Dracula later on...

That's what I have, and I can't get the game at all. I'm confused as to why this is. Actually I can't get ANY of the Konami games on my phone.  :P

EDIT: I was actually able to get the game yesterday!

I think it's pretty cool so far. Great graphics for a cell phone game! I wish the enemies looked this good in the GBA/DS games! The controls are a bit jerky but thus far it looks like a really cool game!

Yeah, I saw a long trailer at Gametrailers.com.

Looks decent enough, though the sprite art is laughable.

Music is alright, though, and backgrounds have more detail than I though they would. ALso, it looks like there's several weapons to utilize.

Yeah, maybe I'll try it in some form of emulation someday.

I tried the game again today - nothing new at all - but I noticed this at the bottom of the About menu:

SUPPORT:

No idea what that's about. Yes, there is a 0 in there.

I finished the game the other night, and I like it better than some of the existing games! It's pretty good for a cellphone game!

How is this possible!

Perhaps because he judged it for what it was: a cell phone game, and didn't bash on it for not being with amazing DS graphics, sixty-plus hours of game play (okay, overstated, but whatever), and everything else that people have been pissed about.

DoctaMario, good for you. :) Glad to see someone can enjoy it!

Thank you sir! ;) That's precisely it. You can't expect a cell phone game to have the depth of a console or even a hand held game. It's just not gonna happen! But for what it is, OoS is a great game! IT's fun, it's got good graphics, good music, and even some semblance of a story!

I could easily see this as being a great game if it was on handheld or console, with a more fleshed out story.

I think the story was cool, the main hero was an awesome homage to Kid Dracula (the hair), and there was hellova lot of depth to the items and things that could be aquired. And I really liked the music too. :)

I judge games as games.  No game should be dealt lenience just because of its platform.  And by that meter, Order of Shadows is a crappy, loathsome excuse for a game.

It's a cell phone game. It's not MEANT to compete with anything on the DS or whatever. It's meant to pass a few minutes while waiting around for a friend or something.

I agree. Let's look at an example:

That's God of War: Betrayal for cellphones. That game literally shits on Order of Shadows, AND it's in 2D.

Why can't CV games be like this?

Why can't they be like that? Because CV games are CV games, and you should know what to expect by now.

I don't understand why some "fans" are even here if all they tend to do is bitch about every game, sans the very few they enjoyed.

And yes, I bash out PoR and CotM, but at least I gladly play them all. They just...suck compared to the rest of them.

I was just comparing the amount of quality put into this game & other games, while CV remains stagnant (at the moment).

But whatever, people still enjoy it so it doesn't matter.
