Title: Castlevania Bane of Twillight (CV1 ROM-hack)
Post by: Holy Diver on November 18, 2018, 02:38:54 PM
Posting this here because I've lately slowed down the progress on this and hopefully showing it here might somewhat motivate me to finish it.
It's thing I started working on somewhere around last spring.
Other than graphics and level design, I'm looking into changing a few enemies around(which I'll definitely do, I'm just unsure how much I can change with this little knowledge of NES code) changing some music and hopefully making an alternate character mode via another patch(which hopefully wouldn't be a gfx change, but also have different main weapon and some subweapons)

Here are some pics, although a few might be outdated(specifically Stage 4).
(Red guy in the picture is the player character, stage pics are taken from Stake Editor since all stages aren't traversable atm)

Neat! Like the look of the stages. You could also put in some ruin parts to those sprites to give the stages some more variety if you wanted to. I've always found the NES castlevanias interesting sprite-wise due to how the castle and other stone structures were in the midst of crumbling away.

Thanks! :D
I might, and then again I might not. It mostly depends on how much space I have and I intend to use some of remaining space for things like statues. And I'll probably have to rework either Stage 2 or Stage 4 for more variety since both have green ass blocks against a red ass mountain view.

Working within limitations can be a real pain sometimes. Is it possible to slightly expand the memory in order to get what you want? I'm sure others have done it with their hacks.

Of course it's possible, given someone knows their coding.
As for me... I do more of code corrupting, so to speak.
I probably could ask someone for help but:
-I'd like to finish this on my own
-I'm probably gonna have to wait for a while

Well, in either case I wish you luck  :)

The only real criticism I have is that the tiles look a tad to uniform from what I've seen.

Aside from that, it looks like it's gonna be a treat to play!

Uniform as in stages all look the same or ...?

I believe Partial Blooverine is referring to the graphics of the stages you've shown us. That's why I recommended having some ruins graphics in there to help spruce things up a bit to give it that ole CV NES touch. It would help to make things less uniform, but again if memory is an issue then it's not a big deal.

Ok, so here's a bit of an update, or rather lack of one. I've done a bit of polish on some stages and started to redo stage 4  to be more like a cave/catacombs-type area. Also all stages are now traversable, but level design is pretty weak at the moment. I'll tweak it some when I modify the enemies. That being said, my computer seems to fuck with me a lot lately, so I'm not doing much at the moment. I'm looking into fixing it so expect a more elaborate update when I do.

Since the last update I've made some changes to Queen Medusa's code and I've found an artist who has remade graphics in later levels and some enemies.
That being said, I've lost interest in this project, but I'm reluctant to cancel it.
That's why I'm putting this project on hold for the time being. In case I leave this project however, there is a guy who might be interested in finishing it, but I'm not going to bother him yet, because he's currently a bit busy.
Cheerio for now.

Dang  :-\

Well, I do hope you find your groove again sometime and get back to this.

Me too man.
I just never seem to finish anything I start.

Ok, just a lil update.
The project isn't dead, but progress is as slow as always, with my laptop's terrible mousepad and whatnot.
Right now I'm redoing stage graphics. The only ones I'm keeping are probably stage 3 ones since those are IMO the best shit I made our of all background sets I've made thus far.
So far I've redone most of stages 4 and 6. Other ones I still have to figure out.
That's about it for now.

Been a while hearing from you. Glad to know you're still working on this  :)

So, most of stage graphics are done now. The only one remaining is stage 1, although at this point I'm thinking about reusing some of the graphics shown in my initial post(namely the forrest background) while changing up the inner part of the level. I tried some Thaddeus-esque stuff but I just couldn't pull it off. I've also started experimenting with enemy code, but don't expect anything fancy. Also, I might post some of said stage gfx, just not right now.

Uhhh, this thing is on hold again I guess. Sometimes I have strikes of creativity and work on it, but most of the time it's just in the back. I have some bigger priorities at the moment, so it'll probably stay so for some time. It's still not completely cancelled tho.
So, yeah.
Another hiatus.
Yay.
