I suppose that's some of why I find some bits rather jarring, especially the goblin king's song in the extended edition of Unexpected Journey.  It's too against the serious tone that Jackson and co have put in the films. 
  I think as a goodbye to Middle Earth, yes, it is very fitting.  I like how it has that double-meaning in the lyrics.  The inclusion of clips from both triologies was also very fitting, together with the behind the scenes clips as well.  Boyd is also a very good singer, there's a raw emotion in his voice as he sings this, helped massively, I think, by the fact that he was himself in LotR.  I expect that I'll be choked up in the cinema was the credits roll on this, as The Last Goodbye plays.
