Title: Tri-Monthly Dungeon 3D Art Contest (Deadline for entries Dec 31th 2014) UPDATED
Post by: darkmanx_429 on October 16, 2014, 12:20:16 PM
(https://castlevaniadungeon.net/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi57.tinypic.com%2Fxfu6tg.jpg&hash=e6743694d6ec07cb7df23d66b464169a)
**The contest has been adjusted in scale to ensure max participation from members.

A coffin, sometimes referred to as a casket, is a funerary box used for housing the bodies of the deceased. This is usually in preparation for burial in a cemetery or crypt. Coffins are often used by vampires to protect them during the daylight hours when they are forced to rest for fear of being exposed to the ultraviolet radiation of the sun. Tradition holds that a vampire must line his or her coffin with a layer of soil from their native land. The vampire lord known as Dracula maintained his coffin in the bowels of his ancient castle fortress nestled in the mountains of Transylvania.

We should take volunteers on who would like to be judges for this contest the same way we did the sprite contest

RULES: Participants of the 1st Annual Dungeon 3-D Art Contest will create a single prop of Dracula's Coffin using Autodesk Maya, Zbrush, 3DS MAX, Blender or whatever 3-D or what modeling/sculpting program that works for their theme.

Contest starts on October 17th, 2014, PM Pacific Time (PT)

Deadline for entries is December 31st, 2014 at 11:59 PM Pacific Time (PT)

Winner's will be announced and posted on the dungeon by January 7th, at 11:59 (PT)

Judges will be able to judge: January 1st - January 6th

There will be awards for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place.

There will be no teams allowed for this month's contest. (Mods, my suggestion is for us to make some of the alternate entries in the sprite contest into Team Awards since we will have multiple awards for Teams in the future

There are no poly-count, style, or art limits.

Participants are free to choose any iteration of Dracula's Coffin from any game in the Castlevania series provided the prop is in full 3-D.

All scenes will be fully textured and lit with light sources.

All props can be in low or high poly meshes.

A WIP (work-in progress) thread must be made and maintained in the contest. ( Feedback and critiques from members is encouraged.)

All final renders will include screenshots from multiple perspectives or real-time video in high resolution that best shows the angles of your prop.

The art submitted must be originally made for this contest. No existing art work will be accepted.

Artist participating must be a member of The Castlevania Dungeon. Registration is free.

Please Note: Judges are encouraged to participate, but entries will not be counted during a contest.

I like this idea.

I think some of the non winning 2d award sprites can be converted into awards for this contest.

I'm not sure I'm qualified to judge something like this. I don't have any real experience with 3D modeling, just a little with programming 3D rendering.

Though in general I wonder, given the large amount of work involved, do you think the turnout will be any good? Not to put the idea down, just seems like in comparison to sprite work 3D modeling takes an insane amount of time to be doing casually, especially if you want any degree of quality. Starting off with the Castle Keep may be overshooting the barrier to entry, at least for the first contest.

Rather than push the deadline back, I'd recommend picking something with a smaller scale. Just a little warm up to get things started. This may not be a completely appropriate example, but something maybe like, bring into 3D a classic Castlevania item, like the Whip Upgrade, one of the Sub Weapons, or a Potion, etc. Hearts are too easy though, I'd disallow them as an entry.

1st post has been modified.

The contest has been scaled down to just a single prop which for this month is Dracula's Coffin.

Thanks Uzo!

No problem. The theme you chose is really good too. We haven't seen one of those in a long time. Very fitting for the season. I'm expecting to see some badass designs.

This is severely limiting to those of us who either have no modelling experience or don't have access to the tools.

Just a thought.

Not really. Ever tried Blender? It's free and on the net.

Hell, I got my bud Warmachine started using Zbrush in less than 30 minutes by text and he never even picked it up before.

Here are a bit of free modeling tools to start looking at:

http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/25-free-3d-modelling-applications-you-should-not-miss/ (http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/25-free-3d-modelling-applications-you-should-not-miss/) (Updated 1st post.)

All you have to do is with like anything else is play with them. You only have to make 1 small prop. More than a month is plenty of time for you to learn the tool enough to get something made. That's why posting your WIP is very important. That way you can get feedback and questions answered promptly without wasting too much time researching stuff. Don't overthink it dude. You definitely don't have to be a master to be in these contests! That's also the other intent of these contests to get people into doing 3d stuff that never tried it before, nothing wrong with that!

I own all the Autodesk software. Learning to do this shit well is not a two-day task. I still don't know how to use the shit and I've tried more times than I care to acknowledge.

Ever tried Digital Tutors.com man? I am sure you could you could do tutorials on there to get you started. Some of those tutorials are only a few hours and they are broken into manageable smaller chunks that you can work at your leisure.

Try that out bro, they work wonders!

It's not much to look at yet but I decided to make a start on my entry today.

I plan on keeping it low poly and putting most of the detail in the the textures.

@darkmanx: Don't you think it would be better if the 3d contests are held every quarter? This one can be extended til the end of December to give more time to the participants. Once more people with experience join in, then the length of the contests would start to shorten.

You just read my mind and I just got a PM.

This contest is extended till the end of December

I'll have to think about the quarter thing. Back in the day in college, we were making full environments in 3 months time span so I think it will depend on the contest type.

Let's just go by contests type and then decided in real time on the fly.

I can already tell you January's contest will be another small prop, so 2 months for those kinds of contest I think is more than reasonable.

March will mostly likely be a full environment and that will be a 3 month contest. I am also scheduling the contest types in a way that you can also use the single props for previous contests to populate your scene in the new environmental contest.

If anyone else has any ideas or suggestions for me let me know!

Nice start, darkmanx_429.

Did you use an alpha for the cross and bat?

You're probably already familiar with this artist but you can see some really nice methods for doing cool details here: http://www.youtube.com/user/gmagno2000/videos (http://www.youtube.com/user/gmagno2000/videos)

I think he draws a mask and uses inflate to get something to start with but if you've unwrapped your lowest subdivision I think you could also use a texture and convert that to a mask and do the same thing.

Honestly, as I said in the awards contest, they don't look anything resembling awards at all. Maybe ask Plot Twist to make another set? Or use Plot Twist's for all contests?

Or have someone 3D model some? (Spinning coffin of Alucard's SotN save room?)

We already have different awards for the music contest it would be nice to have different awards for the this contest as well.

I'll think about about asking The Plot Twist, but I was trying to just use awards from October's sprite contest...

I also liked Jop's awards as an alternate....

Ok, then it's decided that we will use the GoldBat icons for all the art contest! ;D

You guys may as well have the plot twist re-create all of the past awards as well if he is willing to.

None of them really look like awards compared to his golden bat. In fact, a lot of the entries that lost to the plot twist look more like awards than some of the pre-existing ones. For example the music fanatic award. They're just cropped sprites of characters, not really award looking at all.

The whole thing should be overhauled for consistency IMO.

Which also brings me to say that entries that Uzo said don't look like awards, such as Kaonstantines, actually match what has been used for awards on this forum so far (cropped images of characters) more than the winning entry. Kao was probably just trying to match the look of what is already being used.

I thought about that before, and just wanted to mention it now while we're on the topic of the awards.
I hope I'm not coming off as bitchy or annoying.

Oh, something I noticed: You labeled the thread "1st Annual". I'm not sure if you're aware but that means the contest is only held once a year, and that this is the first of them.

No offense, but no.
The "Contest" awards should resemble real awards, like the Grammys or Golden Globes or whatever.

The current 'awards' are awards in name only, with no true competition placed behind them, and were also created mostly by fans early on.  They are superfluous and should be entirely different than contest awards.  In fact, in the Awards plugin for the board, I have them into different categories for that same reason.  Some are just 'for fun', while these last few competition-based ones have been 'for glory'.

I really should play less Super Smash Bros...

Does anyone have any updates to show?

You guys should be pretty far at this point.

Almost ready to call this finished.
Anybody know of a way I can put this up to view in 3D so that a person could rotate it and check it out from all angles?

Due to the great disparity in poly count and rendering, it is hard to determine if the intent of the contest was to make a prop you would see in a game or not. Luckily that factor was not necessarily to clarify for me to make my judgement. I examined each piece for consistency within itself.

1st Place: C Belmont
I picked this entry as the top winner because you went the extra mile and made the interior to your coffin. In addition there were no actual defects or high points of criticism heavy enough to outweigh that. The gold work on the lid and the handles on the side are pretty well done. They add a good amount of variety to the piece, even if they are somewhat plain. That said everything seems really consistent with it’s own style which is a big plus and a crucial aspect of art. Dracula would fall asleep soundly in the nice interior of this coffin.

2nd Place: Aelfwine
What kept yours from taking the top spot was mostly not having gone the extra mile to do an interior. I might have picked it for the top depending on how that came out if you did it. I think your texture work on the wood is superior and looks overall better. The cross design and the monster hand design for the handles gives it a little bit of a unique twist. Some of this does feel inconsistent though. While the wood texture is nice, the cross itself looks as if it is not up to the same level of realism. It looks really plasticy. The hands also seem to be much higher in detail, mainly noticeably higher poly count, than the rest of the coffin and it’s details.

Also while I did not deduct any points for this, since I’m sure ti would have never been shown in any scene the prop would be a part of, the wood texture on the bottom of the coffin is grossly out of proportion with the actual size of cut wood. Perhaps it’s not meant to be seen, but I’d imagine you’d leave that part essentially blank as C Belmont had.

3rd Place: BMC_Warcmchine
The lack of texture use is really what set the higher placing entries apart from yours. It feels like a work in progress, or a prototype/’3d sketch’ to use as a reference for a future piece. The intention and amount of detail your piece contains could have potentially overtaken them if you had continued to work on it into a final piece. The blood splatter was a nice touch, and the presumingly marble stand looks pretty neat. Overall, it feels almost like a plastic model or a clay sculpture. The whole thing looks in a way lumpy. Noticeably edges, ridges, scratch marks, etc are all rounded and unnatural looking. More like they were hand shaped out of clay, not cut into stone or metal, or wood.

Did Not Place: DarkmanX
Obviously disqualified for being a judge entry, but of course it’s meant just for fun anyway. Would have easily swept the competition away, but I’m sure you knew that going in. The engravings were handled really well. CUts into the coffin are clean and nothing looks muddied or infringed on by them. WHat is clean cut is clearly clean cut, and what is curvy is clearly curvy. It is certainly a tomb the Dark Lord would be font to rest in.

DARKMAN
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1st Place: C. Belmont - This is an fantastic entry.  Aesthetically your color choices are solid and the design is simple yet effective. I checked your wireframe in p3d and it has perfect edge flow and no n-gons. This would be a game ready model. Nice hand-painted textures. The scale of your textures is excellent too. The only suggestion I have for you is to add a bump/height map to your models in the future. This model could benefit from the Bump map to bring out the texturing in your wood and the difference in the texturing of the inside padding. The height map would bring out the inside of the coffin plus your side handles and cross and trim on top.

2nd Place: Aelfwine - Good entry. I like the overall design and the cross looks cool. Those side handles are really well done and bring out the model. (I am a sucker for the smaller details like that.) Good wireframe, no n-gons, and solid edge flow. You could definitely use a spec map on your model. That would bring out way the light bounces on the metal parts of your side handles from the way the light comes of the wood. (Yes, the wood would also have some spec but not as much as the handles. You could also benefit from a height map, for the etching on the top. They would give the illusion of the “Simon Was Here” really itched in the wood. And you could also use a Bump map to really bring out your wood. Be aware about the scale of your textures in the future in relation to your model, particularly the back of the model. You also have a couple of sections where you have seams in your texture and it doesn’t look seamless. particularly the top of your model. You need to smooth that out in the future.

3rd Place: BMC_Warcmchine - Good design choices, especially the damage design in this piece. I know that you are still a novice to 3d modeling/Zbrush but you are getting there. What really sells your piece is the damage. Artistically, great texture treatment went into there. Areas for you to work on would be your coloring. Everything is too grey scaled in your piece, even if you would of added some coloring in the erosion of the top of the coffin (maybe some browns/greens)it would of made a nice contrast to the other colors. Also be wary of the scale of your texturing particularly the ground textures. The scale of those pieces are highly noticeable in relation to your coffin (which should be your focal point). Also those ground pieces could have benefited from some different texturing than everything else even if it was grass, mud, etc. Definitely keep up the edge build up and such in your textures, games love grime and damage in their props and assets so you are on the right track there!

Did Not Place: Darkmanx -Nothing too serious only a couple of hours of work went into this piece. Mostly a study in some edge work and damage design in Zbrush. The texturing was made with some hand painting and custom alphas in Zbrush. Just practice, the entry doesn’t count anyways. I could have smooth the etching out in the coffin top alot more. That’s the only major gripe I have. Maybe, i’ll do something with this piece in the future and finish it up..

 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ZSG
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1st Place: Aelfwine -The attention to detail in this piece is amazing. With the way you have the textures, nothing looks completely flat either. The handles really bring this piece out. I also like the way there aren’t too many scratch marks, but just enough to make it look not-brand-newish. “Simon waes her” made me laugh.

2nd Place: C_Belmont -I really like this piece. What could have really brought this piece out though would be more polygons. It looks like the handles are stuck to the sides, and the padding looks like stone. The design itself is really good. The texturing is good, although it looks brand new (?).

3rd Place: BMC_Warmachine -I really hate to put this piece at third place, but it looks completely unrealistic. Everything looks like a bad plastic-rubber sculpture. The lack of color doesn’t help either. Although it looks like you put a lot of time into it. The scratch marks make it look really cool though. I’d suggest a sharper model.

Did Not Place: Darkmanx -This peice is REALLY good. The only reason I didn’t place it because you’re a judge, and that would be unfair for a judge to place in a contest.
