Title: The Belmonts are coming to Smash Bros!
Post by: Reinhart77 on May 22, 2018, 10:31:58 AM
Seems like there’s a rumor that Simon might make it to the Switch’s Smash Bros. game.

Simon has been mentioned in a lot of "leaks," I could see it happening this time.

Question is, which Simon will they use?

They would probably go for the most current version of Simon, which would be the Grimiour of Souls version, which would be a nice recognisable one too.

Grimoire of Souls version but colored to look more like his old NES sprite. Alt colors include Simon's Quest, SCV IV, and actual GoS colors.

As long as they don't do a "Megaman" where the model looks too much like the NES sprites rather than the official artwork.

Then again, Simon simply showing up will be the tipping point for me buying a switch.

If Simon actually shows up I'll buy a switch. I would be curious on his moveset though. CV has a lot of religious things in it, especially for a Belmont. Do you think they'd use crosses, bibles, and holy water?

Here is what it was.

I'm way more excited for this than I thought I'd be. Mega Man AND Simon, two of the biggest non-Nintendo NES icons, together in one game would be amazing. I really feel like it's going to happen this time. And this makes me feel like the floodgates are going to open soon for Castlevania, as I said during E3 with all the rumors and evidence coming together. We had the two "leakers" talking about Resident Evil 2 Remake and new Smash characters, all of which were confirmed by Nintendo except Simon at said event, and the intriguing talk from the Gamekult editors, too, about a game they couldn't discuss at the time, which didn't appear to be Hyper Sports R:

I'm still very curious to see how this pans out given the previous reporting. Nothing may happen, but it's not out of the question that Konami could revisit Castlevania beyond GoS. Here's why:

1.) As reported on numerous sites in June 2017 from Konami rep: "All I can say is that there is lots of internal discussions going on within Konami regarding what games we can bring to the Nintendo Switch, other than Bomberman, a game which we are well aware of its heritage and how loved it and Castlevania is. So much so that Castlevania is getting is getting its own show on Netflix and because of that, we’re hearing a lot of desires from our fans for a new Castlevania series. So we do know there is a demand for a new game, but right now nothing is set in stone as the discussions are still on going." (i.e. http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2017/06/konami_on_super_bomberman_r_support_and_the_possibility_of_producing_more_games_for_switch (http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2017/06/konami_on_super_bomberman_r_support_and_the_possibility_of_producing_more_games_for_switch))

2.) After the previous statements, "Belmont Bomber" Simon skin comes to Super Bomberman R for Switch. (i.e. http://www.siliconera.com/2017/06/29/super-bomberman-r-update-lets-play-simon-belmont-pyramid-head-bombers/ (http://www.siliconera.com/2017/06/29/super-bomberman-r-update-lets-play-simon-belmont-pyramid-head-bombers/))

3.) Netflix announces Season 3 of Castlevania is in the works, with Season 2 launching in Summer 2018. (SEE TWO ARTICLES: https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/daily-briefs/2018-01-19/netflix-castlevania-writer-2nd-season-premieres-this-summer/.126679 (https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/daily-briefs/2018-01-19/netflix-castlevania-writer-2nd-season-premieres-this-summer/.126679) & https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2018-06-08/netflix-castlevania-animated-series-gets-3rd-season/.132605 (https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2018-06-08/netflix-castlevania-animated-series-gets-3rd-season/.132605))

4.) Curse of the Moon had "100,000 downloads less than a week after it launched...56% of them on Nintendo platform," and Ritual of the Night scored $5,545,991 on Kickstarter and has again recently gotten buzz as a replacement for Castlevania.
(https://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2018-06-07-half-of-bloodstained-curse-of-the-moons-week-one-sales-were-on-switch (https://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2018-06-07-half-of-bloodstained-curse-of-the-moons-week-one-sales-were-on-switch) & Google search game and Castlevania pops up in headlines).

What we see above is active interest in Switch's market, an apparently successful (and continued) revival of Castlevania's branding to a broader audience via the Netflix series, and what could be seen as "brand-poaching" of sorts with a new franchise getting compared to Castlevania and showing decent sales buzz.

I think we are gradually moving toward Konami doing something, in the same way that Capcom made their move with Mega Man 11. I don't believe it will be a truly bold move (i.e. expanding on the style of Castlevania 64/LoD), but it should be a lateral move that will complement Bloodstained's emergence. I wouldn't be surprised if we get 1.) A Castlevania 1 remake, 2.) A Castlevania III clone, perhaps even tied in to the Netflix series 3.) A mid-level Metroidvania. If any of the rumors are true, I do not believe it will be a return to Lords of Shadow or a straight GoS port, though the latter is the more likely of these two. I'm imagining it will either be done in-house with one of the seemingly newer teams, like the one that did Metal Gear Survive, or have it passed off to a company like WayForward, who I believe expressed their interest in Castlevania in the past. I'm pretty sure it will be either 2D or 2.5D when/if it does happen.

...

Well, I wouldn't say I have supreme confidence in Konami, but I want to pump the brakes a little, because here's what I'm left wondering...

First: What was the other Nintendo Switch game from Konami at E3? The official E3 site suggests two Switch games were supposed to be at E3 from Konami: "Action/Adventure > Nintendo Switch" and, later down the list, "Compilations > Nintendo Switch" (https://mp1630k065.mapyourshow.com/7_0/exhibitor/exhibitor-details.cfm?ExhID=4XTDjeQv (https://mp1630k065.mapyourshow.com/7_0/exhibitor/exhibitor-details.cfm?ExhID=4XTDjeQv)). Hyper Sports R is a next-gen Wii Sports-style compilation game of various sports activities. So, was the E3 listing above suggesting that one game fit two categories--you could make a loose argument there because of the nature of sports in culture--or was the "Action/Adventure" game pulled or shown behind closed doors with some kind of extra restrictions to media? Secondly: The embargo seems to have been about Hyper Sports R, yet Gamekult, if translations were correct, said that the game being shown was not PES or Hyper Sports R and deflected the questioning when asked if it was "horror-related." (You could still make an argument for some sort of development related to Silent Hill or Metal Gear Survive, but Castlevania also fits there.) So, there are some questions there...

If we're speculating a little, besides the trends* posted earlier in this thread that are in favor of an eventual Castlevania return at some level, one has to wonder if it was decided it was too early in development to really showcase it, or if Nintendo changed their Smash reveal plans related to Simon, and therefore the potential tie-in with a Switch Castlevania was pulled for a later showing in a Nintendo Direct. I mean, we had all that alleged evidence of Star Fox Grand Prix existing from Retro and therefore perhaps making a showing, and then nothing. But that doesn't mean that game doesn't exist, either.

Knowing what the Gamekult editor was referring to, and if they can talk about it, would be huge. But if Simon is ever confirmed for Smash from the earlier roster rumors that already turned out to be correct, I think Castlevania for Switch will probably happen in some capacity, because that will be one too many rumors around the alleged game that will have come true when you consider the RE2 Remake confirmation, too.

In closing, sure, Konami is primarily more of a casino- and sports-focused company at this point, but given that they did something like Super Bomberman R (and now Hyper Sports R), I don't think they won't do games under the right conditions--i.e. potential profits to be made from market timing-driven properties.

*In that earlier post, I forgot to add that Solid Snake is back in Smash (and Bomberman was added as an Assist Trophy), which is a licensing deal with Konami, showing some continued partnership on Konami's part with Nintendo Switch.

This reveal was a way hype! I've been using the gamefaq boards for smash and most people are more excited for K Rool, but I know you guys are more into the incredible CV content.
- Simon and Richter
- I believe this is the first time seeing classic Simon in full 3D?
- Appearances from classic bosses. Are they all stage bosses like Dracula?
- Alucard assist trophy
- 34 songs
- An incredible looking stage
- Death's scythe as an item

The only things that shocked me were no daggers (I'm fine either way, but I just thought they'd have them) and full on calling the moves crosses and holy water.

But DAMN!!!

I didn't think it would happen, but I can't not get a copy of the only game that exists with Mario, Link, Samus, Megaman, Pac-man, Sonic and Simon Belmont officially in it. Now all it needs is a platformer mode like one of the earlier smash games and Nintendo will have made an official version of Super Mario Crossover.

It's odd how they're retconning the combat cross design into the regular canon. That pachinko game starring Richter did it too but I thought that was just Konami recycling assets.

Just looks like they just added a cross guard to me.
The way they use the Vampire Killer in the actual game play is definitely not like the Combat Cross either.
Just a nod, I guess.
Can't even say the spike on the pommel is a reference since the original Vampire Killer design has been officially depicted with it in various illustrations.

Yes, he's back as Richter. He was already voicing Male Robin, so it only makes sense he could reprise the role with little hassle. I'm not sure if Keith Silverstein is playing Simon again

But the references are incredible. Like how Simon kind of throwing his cloak gave me throw backs to Trevor from cv3 and even Gabriel from Mof.

And correct me if I'm wrong but is not the vampire killer design also current with how Trevor gets his whip power up as well?

Also it was brief, but I like how Richter did "hydro storm" in the pikmin stage.

I am still absolutely floored by today. Castlevania got way more love than I expected for it, Sakurai rolled out the whole red carpet for the series.

Simon, Richter, Alucard assist, Dracula's Castle stage with unique bosses, 34 music tracks, and Death's scythe for an item...

I can see this getting a lot of people not familiar with Castlevania into the series, and I hope Konami plans to capitalize on this golden opportunity. Sakurai used the same method for Fire Emblem in Melee, and it paid off tremendously. This franchise is definitely on it's way toward a revival.

I don't know for sure, but I'd imagine it'll be like stage hazards on other levels. So something like random Wolfman falls onto the map, does a few swipes and dashes off screen, and the players just have to dodge him while doing their regular fighting. Death probably does the ol' baby scythe spam that have to be avoided. That's my guess anyway.

Omg Castlevania amiibos!  I havent looked into if smash is making new amiibs (yet), but the idea has got my attention.

Simon kinda reminded me of a He Man action figure moving around in the game.  So glad to see Luigi’s vacuum cleaner in the forefront  too.

Who knows  but in good time eventually. Imagine a battle royal of sorts between the cv bosses and your friends. It would be like the yellow devil but super charged. But something triggers Dracula, so maybe there are certain requirements to trigger them.

Just alittle effort can go a long way. Market and present Castlevania right and people are going to notice. Sakurai I think is an exception I think, he can look at any series and just understand what makes that series relevant and make it have sense in a way where it is like something no one has ever seen before. Fe and cv I think from a certain point of view have similarities. like being a hardcore series that while people loved, they were kind of a cult status kind of series, then awaking happen and has been shot Fe into the  mainstream light. CV has not had that since the mid 90's perhaps.

Also I have been hearing a theory lately that the characters that have been chosen are possibly the top characters that were on the smash ballot. I wonder how possibly true that can be. Any opinions on that anyone? I know I submitted my vote to Simon so maybe there is a correlation?

The thing that's been largely overlooked, except by OSM, is that the ENTIRE LIST of E3 "rumors/leaks" noted on this board have come true now--even this one about Simon that some said was far-fetetched--except for the new Castlevania game project. So, if Ridley and Ice Climbers and Simon were real, and the Resident Evil 2 Remake for PS4 was real...I think we may be looking at least at a teaser of a new Castlevania game (or a collection) by the time E3 2019 rolls around.*

*I'm having trouble remembering if the "collection" in the rumors was just Hyper Sports R or not. But there was definitely a second "game" mentioned by Gamekult and at least one other source that seemed to strongly suggest a new Castlevania game. One "leaker," went so far as to note it was to counter Bloodstained's rise, as I recall. And given Konami's statements about Switch during Bomberman R, and all this Smash Bros action, it could be that Switch will be the test system for the revival.

I would love to see a Smash trailer with Simon and Richter fighting Dracula and Ganondorf together, and when all seems lost... LINK joins the fray.

That Monster Dance cover would pair exceptionally well with a ton of musical selections from LoZ, and it's not like Link doesn't already have a ton of experience fighting very similar foes to Dracula.

Come on Nintendo. You gave me dreams. Make them happen pleeeeease.

A little thing I noticed in the screenshots of Dracula's Castle is that somehow, the Count is able to cast a shadow, when by all means he shouldn't since he lacks the soul necessary to do so.  I'm thinking that Nintendo is somewhat referencing the 1992 film with Gary Oldman with the shadow moving separate from Dracula, but almost in sync.

if only IGA cared to help keep Sonia Belmont canon and made the successor to the canned Castlevania Resurrection game with retconned story so Sonia's plot doesnt contradict Alucard.  all they had to do was make Sonia the first Belmont, and after defeating Dracula, hold a tradition that men that marry Belmont women must still adopt the Belmont family name (some families actually use that tradition and special exceptions), and a different lore to the vampire killer whip.
very interesting plot possibilities which could have opened the door to new female Belmont heroes later in the timeline which could have side stories and adventures, which dont have to involve Dracula but still other evils, and there could be other vampires too.

that would have been better than LOI and COD combined.

And Dracula and a couple of bosses as stage hazards. And 34 music tracks.

Needless to say, I'm going to have to cover this game in some detail over on ICVD. Not that I didn't have an excuse to buy it anyway. I mean, it's Smash Bros. If Nintendo ever has a "must buy" game, it's the Smash ones.

I've always felt that it's a shame that we never got a game that fully realized the epic fantasy atmosphere of the oldschool game covers.  I'd love to see a modern game with 3D graphics that at least attempted it.  This Simon is honestly the closest we have ever gotten to that.

DejaWolf was doing it, but it made so much noise that it was canceled :c, although this may have helped konami to see that there are still fans and many people who expect more from castlevania, perhaps and not to sit idly by the launch from Bloodstained, I believe that there will be a good game of exploration, but with the style and art of the old school, but in this moment CV in smash is great

Richter is already considered an echo fighter of Simon, unless I missed something big.

... Oh, and why not Nathan Graves and Reinhardt Schneider? I'M AB-SO-LU-TE-LY SERIOUS.

Probably because most casual Castlevania fans have forgotten who those guys are entirely, owing to the fact that their games weren't all that popular.

I mean, I get and appreciate that you're excited, but Smash is a celebration of Nintendo, not Castlevania. Several of Simon Belmont's games were staples of the early Nintendo library, warranting his inclusion. Richter is a very popular character, showing up as a primary character in three nope, four games (initially forgot DXC, remake status be damned) and making cameo appearances in several others, so it makes sense that he'd also be included. These are characters with big, broad fandoms.

Johnny Morris Smol Bean Edition, Julius, Nathan Graves, Reinhardt Schneider, and Shanoa are VERY niche characters, and Shanoa is further damned by having enough visual similarities with Bayonetta that a more casual Smash fan who hadn't played their games could probably confuse them onscreen, which wouldn't play well since Bayonetta is already in Smash Ultimate.

Sounds like you'd love Serio's Castlevania Fighter though.

(God's sake, is that even still around?)

It's good to have dreams though. Welcome to the forums, by the way.

They really could pretty closely represent every version of every Belmont.  Simon could easily be Christopher and classic classic Trevor.  Richter could be Leon, Juste, CoD Trevor, possibly even Julius.

Argued by whom?

I don't often see her referred to (especially by name) anywhere outside this website (and the Anti-Chapel forums back when those were a thing). In most discussions that I have seen, the top five tend to be the same all around, even if they shift in order.

Alucard, Richter, Simon, Trevor and for some reason LEON of all characters all get unreal amounts of press in favorites lists. And when Leon doesn't make it, Soma usually is in his place. I don't think I've ever seen Shanoa on more than a couple of those lists, and she's never very close to the top.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but I am saying that you seem to be pulling from a completely different pile than I am, so I am genuinely curious as to how you came to the conclusions you did.

It kinda goes default with having the 3rd most acclaimed metroidvania CV. But let's consider your list correct for a minute: All Belmonts + Morris fall into the Simon echo category. Outside  of them, the main CV options are more or less in order: Alucard, then Soma, then Shanoa and then Maria

It kinda goes default with having the 3rd most acclaimed metroidvania CV.

I... don't think it's the third most acclaimed castleroid. (http://www.metacritic.com/search/game/castlevania/results?sort=score)

Granted, MetaCritic is far from perfect but it's the closest thing to a objective broad spectrum test of this type of data.

By that rating, we have:

SOTN (duh) with a 93% favorable
Circle of the Moon with a 91% favorable (really wouldn't have called that one, but oh well)
Aria of Sorrow, also with a 91%

Even if we discard one of the two 91's, we're still left with Dawn of Sorrow in third place at an 89%. People liked this stuff.

Discounting rereleases, Order of Ecclesia is at 6th place on that list with an 85, tying with Portrait of Ruin (good critical reviews should be blamed for that one).

So let's get creative, and adjust Portrait's standing in favor of Ecclesia, because, honestly, we should. It's not bad (and anyone who says it is has forgotten what a truly bad game looks and plays like) but it's a long, long way from "beating Order of Ecclesia" level good. Even in that version of the list, Ecclesia BARELY cracks the top 5. Not bad at all, but still not enough to really say "third most acclaimed Metroidvania". Fortunately, we're discounting non-Metroidvanias from this list, and that means that, though it barely scrapes by, now that it's done so, it's secure.

If we allowed the classic games in though... that whole list changes.

I refer you again to my earlier comment:
Argued by whom?
...
I am saying that you seem to be pulling from a completely different pile than I am, so I am genuinely curious as to how you came to the conclusions you did.

We like OOE a lot on this forum (well, most of us do), and if this forum is your primary point of contact with the fandom, you'd come away with the impression that it's a pretty beloved game.

BUT!

A bunch of people actually disliked OoE because they thought it was too hard, or Shanoa's emotional character arc too subtle. Granted, this was in a pre-Dark Souls world, but that's the way that particular cookie crumbles.

Never forget that this forum is hardly indicative of the fandom at large. We're actually kind of strange outliers, for the most part. Find fans on Twitter or Google+, hell, even on Facebook, and opinions are wildly and chaotically more different than the stuff folks on this forum have an uncommon amount of agreement on.

So I don't see how "it kind goes default" because I can't find sufficient evidence to back up your claim that Ecclesia is "the 3rd most acclaimed metroidvania CV". Right now, I figure you're speaking/writing in fandom hyperbole and exaggerations. This doesn't make you bad (we all do it) but when you make that crazily specific and testable a claim, yeah, I'm gonna factcheck the hell out of it.

Addendum: OoE DOES crack the top three on more specialized gaming sites in just under half of the other sites I checked, but I went with Metacritic as it uses impartial listings that are much more free of bias because it only considers the raw numbers; most useful when one is trying to test against specific numbers.

A quick look at the fan art and cosplay. of this series from just about any source shows a significant amount more love for Shanoa than Leon.  I wouldn't really call either of them top heroes in the series, but I certainly see a lot more love for Shanoa, from several sources.

It makes sense that they got Simon AND Richter:
Simon was in CV1, CV2, and CV4 (and Wai Wai World 1 and 2 in Japan), and an unlockable in Harmony of Dissonance's BOSS RUSH, plus CV1 was re-released on the GBA.
Richter has DraculaX from the Wii's Virtual Console (Rondo), as well as the more recent Castlevania: DraculaXX (the SNES one), which was made recently downloadable on the eShop.  Plus, he was also in Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin and had a mode with Maria in that, and that was on the DS.

I think the other characters are being represented through the music.  I'm ECSTATIC that we got "Awake!" from Circle of the Moon is on there.

Heck you can even throw Alucard in that category since he appeared in CV3 for the NES and Dawn of Sorrow for the NDS so he has 2 Nintendo entries under his belt, (come to think of it he is also "technically" in Aria of Sorrow for the GBA in the form of Genya Arikado so thats a total of 3 Nintendo appearances).

There are not words to express my excitement about this!  If you care, here's a little story about when I found out:

So, I didn't get to see this announcement right away.  I'm not sure how long it was after the official Nintendo Direct...long enough that some news source was able to link to the video.  Anyway, work had started, and since it was the beginning of the school year things were particularly crazy and I wasn't paying attention to stuff like this.  The day I found out, we dismissed late, and I was trying to rush home because my church Pastor's wife was babysitting because my wife had to go to the doctor.  When I get home, she's reading a book to my son and agrees to finish it before heading home.  Just then, I hear a *ping* on my phone alerting me to a news article I might be interested in: "Nintendo Direct reveals Simon Belmont as playable...".  Remember, I hadn't been paying attention enough to even be aware that a Direct was coming up so I figure it can't be true, but I've also wanted and talked about how cool a Belmont would be since finding secret characters in the original Smash so I'm excited at the thought.  My initial reaction is to start excitedly shouting, "No way!  No way!  There's no way!  Konami's basically trashed everything good they had, there's no way they'd allow it!" as I open the article, but my pastor's wife is still there, and my daughter is asleep so...
...I get to the article, see the news and the link to the video and now it's even harder to not shout out, "Oh my gosh!  Oh my gosh!  It's real!  It's finally real, it's freaking real!"  Like an idiot, I click the link to watch the direct, only making worse the desire to jump and shout and run around my house despite the aforementioned reasons I couldn't behave that way.  By the time the video reached the hooded figure, I had to stop because I was about to explode.  To this day, nobody (except all of y'all now) knows the true story about what happened that afternoon.

Are you joking?

I mean I love me some Trevor, to be honest I'm a bigger fan of his than Simon's, but there is no disputing the fact that Simon is pretty much the quintessential Belmont and mostt well known hero amongst the CV fandom, he is the Belmont that first started it all and has appeared in more games than any other character in the series, really the only other character within the CV world that even comes close to his popularity and notoriety is Alucard.

maybe he's saying  it because of the Netflix show. Simon is THE Belmont but Trevor is the one getting more exposure rn

My faves are Ritcher, Juste and Julius so idc

It makes sense that they got Simon AND Richter:

Simon's the most popular Belmont with the most games, so that one's a given. Anyone expecting Trevor in his stead is a mite loopy.

Richter works as an echo fighter because he's the most set apart from Simon: bright blue instead of drab brown, faster movement and a ridiculous array of moves (in SOTN at least), pants[!], dark hair, etc. Now I don't know if any of Richter's crazy moves will be present in the new Smash to set him apart from Simon mechanically, but I hope so.

Trevor would have at least made a cool alternate color/costume for Simon, much like Cloud's two appearances in the last game. (They could fashion him after the Netflix series.) It's not like the core movesets would change any. Maybe that'll still be the case. I fully expect a color reminiscent of the Simon's Quest sprite, DON'T LET ME DOWN DEVELOPERS.

I'll personally be excited with Castlevania once more when I have an actual -new- CV game in my library.

I'm gonna disagree with this and take happiness where I can find it, mostly because for all my effort to force some optimism here, I can't shake this feeling that the Netflix series and Simon+Richter in Smash are going to be the end once and for all for this series.

It's the same feeling I had about the PlayStation Vita when it came out: "Yeah, this is awesome and all, but it really just feels like we've hit the end of the road here."

So enjoy it while you can, because we may not get any more out of this series, and if we do, it'll likely be an offensive reduction of the series to sell microtransactions to young mobile gamers with too much money and not enough responsibility.

Better to see it go out on a relatively high note, I think.

I know, it's pessimistic, but it's a pessimism that I have learned well and with good reason over many years, and virtually nothing done in-house by Konami proper has done even the slightest thing to prove me wrong.

That's not one I would really envision coming to SMASH...

I can't say I like the guitar dependency either, and it's not that I don't appreciate different renditions either...

There are a lot of other tunes I would have chosen over Lost Painting, personally, for the context of Smash...

I was about to say that it wasn't that bad, but then near the tail end of the preview it kinda sounded like it got confused as to where it's going and I pretty much lost interest on the rendition right then and there.

I agree. The Smash version to seems to have some bits of the tune that don't quite jive well with the whole score. The little gaps and pauses in the song seem to distract from the whole composition. Not sure why they decided to do it that way. I'd prefer it if the song flows naturally and fully.

Going through the internal filenames of the music tracks, apparently the new remixes aren't all based on the respective track's original version. Cross Your Heart, for example, is based on the version from The Arcade, going by its "ac" prefix.

So I was playing the Adventure mode and I wound up fighting Princess Zelda, using the vaporized murdered soul of Charlotte Aulin as an assist weapon, with the desert music from PoR playing in the background, and the level had a castle built on a bridge in the sunset for a background.

I was confused. I'm not sure if that stage was meant to represent a Zelda castle or a Dracula castle.

The CV references throughout the game are awesome. They really show they care and love the series.

(SPOILERS but not really)

Later on in Adventure mode, there's a battle that "mirrors" CV3 with Sheik as Grant, Palutena as Sypha, Simon as Trevor, and the Alcuard assist trophy making an appearance.

Also interesting, the Dracula spirit evolves in Soma.

There's so many great details. I love the mist effect on Dracula's body when your attacks miss his head. Definitely adds more visual flair than your attacks simply doing nothing like in traditional CV games. Near the end of the fight I was saying aloud "Come on, be a phase 2" and there was, and I was delighted to see the ol' Rondo Dracula Transformation. The entire Castlevania stage in World of Light is pretty awesome, too.

I also really enjoy that when Simon gets knocked down he faceplants with his ass in the air, like his classic goofy death pose.

For Simon, it appears to be this, at least to me:
-Choice 1 - Castlevania box art
-Choice 2 - Red - Simon's Quest
-Choice 3 - Yellow & Black - Christopher Belmont
-Choice 4 - Red & Black - Castlevania Chronicles Simon
-Choice 5 - Blue - Super Castlevania IV Japanese Box Art
-Choice 6 - Purple (with gray hair) - Vampire Killer Sprite colors (this one is kinda reaching)
-Choice 7 - Orange with Red Hair - ????
-Choice 8 - Dark purple (dark brown hair) - ????

As for Richter:
-Choice 1 - Classic Blue - Rondo of Blood
-Choice 2 - Red - Unused "Red" Richter (Castlevania - The Bloodletting)
-Choice 3 - Purple - ????
-Choice 4 - Green - Poisoned Sprite for Richter (Rondo of Blood)
-Choice 5 - Yellow/Brown, Red Bandanna - Julius Belmont (Sorrow series)
-Choice 6 - Blue with Gray lining - Symphony of the Night
-Choice 7 - Gray - "Slowed Down"/"Petrified" Richter (Rondo of Blood and DraculaXX)
-Choice 8 - White/Red - Leon Belmont (Lament of Innocence).

8th choice = Doppelganger. Not that one, this one (https://i.ytimg.com/vi/xyhh3FqAlbs/maxresdefault.jpg).

Could be reaching, but I believe they're pulling a visual pun. This color scheme is used by Simon during the Trevor Spirit battle in WoL when they could just have gone for the yellow palette (like they reused the Simon's Quest palette for Gabriel). Thing is, in the game's logic this is "evil Trevor", it's Simon posing as Trevor, as if he were a "copy"... A doppelganger. If you watch the battle you'll notice that the enemy fighters have a purplish glow to them, too. Alucard is excluded as he himself is a completely different kind of entity (an Assist Trophy) and not a "real" fighter that must be defeated to win the battle.

As for Richter:
-Choice 2 - Red - Unused "Red" Richter (Castlevania - The Bloodletting)
Quote
Richter
Red: Resembles Christopher Belmont (https://castlevaniadungeon.net/Images/Screens/castlevania_rebirth_03.jpg) as he appears in Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth.

Richter:
2nd choice = Juste Belmont. The palette scheme is indeed similar to Christopher (AND that Rival sprite), but the fact Richter uses it embodying Juste during a WoL Spirit battle tells me it wasn't Christopher they had in mind (besides, Juste receives far more recognition overall than Christopher does).
4th choice = Adult Maria.
7th choice = Alucard.

Not sure if mentioned, but when they introduce Simon in the trailer they do it in a similar fashion to Richter in the Rondo of Blood opening video.
