Title: Halloween!
Post by: Ratty on September 23, 2012, 01:54:31 PM
Well, with Fall officially under way the holiday season is well and truly upon us. Before the sour note of too much turkey and the sentimentalism of Christmas/Hannukah/Kwanza, there is Halloween. The last hooray of real activity before we're confined by winter weather for the rest of the year. Dungeonites, how do you plan to celebrate this holiday, my personal favorite? Giving out candy? Helping some of the younger set experience the joys of trick'r treating? Or just relaxing with a bowl of assorted treats, popcorn and a nice scary movie? Whatever your plans, have a spooktacular time!

If I dress up as anything it will either be the troll dad or Rich Uncle Penny Bags holding a dog while pushing a baby stroller.

I'm making a kick-ass werewolf outfit based on instructions for this:

Werewolf Costume 2010 - Video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVu6P58xLBg#)

I was going to make it just like in this video, but I decided I should go the full on cosplay route and make it look more like this:

The one day of the year you have an excuse to dress up like something you want to, while hopping the bars full of ladies using it as an excuse to dress like sluts.

Under those circumstances, I presume it'll be appropriate to do Lupin III.

There's a big kegger near where I live this year. I got an invite for it. Not sure if I go. $25 to get in, all the beer you can drink until it runs out. I'd go as a ninja, though. GO into a bar, hang out dressed all ninja-like. Then some guy would be like, "Hey, who the fuck took my beer?" And I'd be like, "You can't see me, I r ninja!" ... Then I'd be like, "Ow. Can't ya take a joke, dude?"

I WAS going to go to Halloween Horror Nights on the first weekend of October, but I decided I'd rather spent the 200+ dollars on getting a car earlier rather than later. That said, there's a Halloween costume party I'm going to the weekend before the 31st. Then on the 31st there's always a huge block party on Lincoln Road in Miami Beach which is always packed to the brim with the afore mentioned chicks dressed as sluts. And then on November 1st I'm on vacation. Going up to Ocala to celebrate Samhain at the Florida Pagan Gathering. It's be my first time at FPG & my first time camping.

I have a ticket to HHN & Epcot, so I might go up for any given weekend once I have my car.

I was thinking of hitting Steam Con (http://www.steamcon.org/concrete5/index.php (http://www.steamcon.org/concrete5/index.php)) the weekend before and for the day of, handing out candy, playing some Silent Hill or watching scary movies.

Been working on a combat cross accessory for my normal Renaissance Faire attire to turn it into some weird vampire hunter dealio. I should probably get back to working/designing it more when I get home from work today...

Halloween is named "Witches' Day/Dia das Bruxas" here. Since its not a special event here apart from the schools (I already finished my studies) I dont plan to do anything special. Maybe I can change my avatar and pretend that Im comemorating it. lol

Oh wow Skullmonkeys over Vampire Piggy Hunter?  :P

Though some Mexican food sounds pretty good...like a messy presentation of enchiladas served out of a skeleton's midsection, nice bean dip from the inside of a skull. Fun things like that!

Of those of us over 21 and want a fun party drink, I present to you bloody eyes!

Aha it's a Bloody Mai Taieye.

Also sounds like good ideas all around. Not a big one for parties myself though Halloween is an exception. Not any around here worth going to though, actually not sure there are any Halloween parties period. Not counting Anti-Halloween Church dinners and dances, and this wretched town is dry so there's not even a single bar. Takes me back thinking about it though, I remember the first Halloween ball I went to the mask I had on had no peripheral vision. It got so bad after about 30 minutes people started thinking I was bumping into them on purpose lol.

I don't have time to read this thread 'cos I gotta finish some work and go to bed (been on jury duty all week, 8 hours a day [not including time to drive there and wake up and get ready and...] and will be through to next weekend, maybe longer, FOR TEN LOUSY BUCKS A DAY DAMN YOU COUNTY), but I will when I have time AND I wanted to say briefly that I friggin' love H'ween. FRIGGIN'.LOVE.HALLOWEDPEEN. So much fun. Will go into details later.

But each October I like to do "October Horrorthon," which is just my marathoning of horror movies. Love the chilly weather, really makes movies that much more fun. Watched the classic Halloween last weekend even if it's not October, and I hate how this jury crud will take up the first week of October if not longer. DAMN YOU COUNTY. So I'll follow it up with Halloween II and III: Season of the Witch since they just came out on fancy new Blu-rays from Shout!/Scream Factory, and I'd like to get the fourth film on BD, but beyond that the sequels don't exist.

So yeah. More in-depth post(s) incoming.

As much as I've always wanted to get all "dolled up" as a jiang shi, I'll probably just wear my changshan and call it a night. We don't get many trick-or-treaters in my neighborhood, but I will probably hand out fortune cookies to the few that come around. (It's just a little something special/different.)

For the most part I'll be busy with work and school; it's likely I won't dress up or do anything special. Although, my work might hold a costume contest sometime during October, so there is that. But I'm not really interested in it, so I'll be damned if they make us all do it. >:(

Just got a sweet treasure chest looking box with what looks like wolf sculpting (think Cloud's pauldron from Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children) on the front. Lift the lid and there are two small bottles for booze and four shot glasses. Thought it would be nice for a Halloween decoration/party item. I'll take pics of it tonight if I remember!

I'll be spending Halloween inside, just enjoying the atmosphere and watching a few movies. Pumpkinhead and Carpenter's Halloween are always must-watch, and The Monster Squad and Herzog's Nosferatu have a strong chance of surfacing this year. May try to rope some friends into a little horror-themed gaming, too- probably Left 4 Dead.
Title: Re: Halloween!
Post by: Abnormal Freak on October 05, 2012, 10:11:47 AM
So, Halloween. Love it. The only thing I don't love is that I can't go trick or treating. :p I'm not a partyer/drinker type. I just think the whole chilly-weathered vibe of being outside after dusk is a load of fun, going door to door scoring candy. You can't reasonably do that at 26. Some friends of mine actually did go trick or treating a few years ago, dressed up and everything, and we'd get people at the door saying things like, "You're some very BIG trick or treaters," some with a laugh, others with a nasty look on their face like we're assholes or something. Though one guy was the best when he was clearly surprised to open the door to see a bunch of adults (or for all he know, teenagers), so he laughs heartily and says, "I don't got any beer for ya or anything!" and we said we'd gladly take the candy, to which he laughed further and complied. It was good for a laugh with the people who weren't dicks about it. Still, makes ya feel pretty damn retarded, so that'll be the last time I dress up and go...unless I'm walking some kid around. ;) THEN I'll maybe join, or at least be able to walk along and observe the fun, living vicariously through the children.

Anyhoo, this year's plans are to have a couple buddies over and watch the Evil Dead series. As y'all have surmised, I'm obsessed with movies and watching them in properly-done high definition or the best available version; I own the Blu-rays for the first two flicks which look amazing (note: I'm talking the second Blu-ray by Lionsgate for the second film; the Anchor Bay disc is a slimy turd), and I've got a Hong Kong DVD for Army of Darkness which is the most complete release of the director's cut (my preferred version) and was sourced entirely from archival 35mm elements (whereas the US DVD took the DC scenes from a poor video source) so it looks really damn good. So I'm eager to watch this stuff back to back; actually, some day I'd like to watch all three films in a continuous flow, watching as if they were one movie/event, and I think doing so would work out well if you omitted the beginning recap and ending for Evil Dead II, cutting off right when Ash is about to fall down from the sky in medieval times, and start up AOD right at that spot, skipping past the recap it has (since none of the two sequels' recaps are entirely consistent with the previous film). Watching it this way, I think it will work out real well as a continuous piece, though it'd require I have two Blu-ray players set up and my DVD player with the latter two being paused at the right spot.

...Unless I choose not to be so anal about it and just use the in-between time as a bathroom/stretch/snack break, heh. I suppose that'll work out just as well for the continuation, like little intermissions.

Soooo, yeah. Last year I discovered the game Costume Quest which is a blast, so I'll be playing through that again nearer to Halloween.

Halloween game time for anyone who wants to play.

See how many of the iconic and not-so-iconic characters below you can name off the top of your head!
I was able to name about 80% of them though I haven't seen all their movies. I've since gotten all the names, though I'm only halfway sure about the one just under the projector. If you wanna post which ones you've got I recommend putting that info in a spoiler so others won't see it unless they want to.

It ended up not happening actually. Went to a zombie pub crawl instead. Did a eyeball with optic nerve and empty eye socket. The eyeball went over pretty well especially having it hanging out of my mouth most of the night.

Finishing touches on my coat. Its almost done prolly finish it up tonight. This is all from last night. Gotta add pockets, shoulder cape, liner... and I think thats it to finish it up. Gotta be done tonight!!

The hoods fully detachable as seen in the first pic. I have a stretchy form fitting kinda cloth hood to wear under the mask to hide my neck and shirt. Mask on top of that and then hood over it. Gotta make the hat too still =/

Pretty insane pumpkin carving there. More like sculpting.

Speaking of pumpkins, I did up this little jack-o'-lantern the other day:

I goofed up a bit while carving, and I'll have to remember never to mark the lines with a sharpie again, unless it's a super fine tipped one. I just wasn't happy carving away at it, because I'd already drawn the eyes and mouth too close together, so having to carve outside of the lines caused a space issue. Too much pumpkin whittled away. But it turned out all right, and although I accidentally cut off a portion of one eye and had to do the other to match, I kinda like the gigantic peepers since it lets the eerie glow through better.

Here's the pumpkin prior to carving, by the way:

And this was my original doodle when coming up with designs (which I drew in early September, ha ha):

Not sure if I can enjoy Halloween as much this year. hurricane Sandy knocked out power and transportation has been diminished.

Perhaps next year will leave me more time to prepare that jiang shi costume. I had a stranger Halloween than most, but I did spend a few hours handing out those aforementioned fortune cookies.

Cool.

Well, we're in the homestretch slide of another year now. Here's hoping you all had a great time of it this October 31st. I didn't do much myself, watched some movies, including Dracula A.D. 1972, which was surprisingly good. Went to my favorite restaurant, which I've not been to in months, and later had a caramel apple or two.  Oh almost forgot, I also played through the entirety of Doom 2 with my significant other, using a mod that lets you play as characters (and use the associated weapons) from Heretic, Hexen, Duke Nukem 3D and ChexQuest as well as the Doom Marine. It was a pretty sweet way to top off the evening.

Halloween 2012 may be over, but the holiday will remain undead in our hearts till next year, when it will rise again for another Monster Mash!

Drac A.D. 1972 was definitely saved by having Cushing AND Lee in it.

And wow that IWAD (I'm guessing something that extensive must be an internal WAD) that you played Doom 2 through sounds amazing, mixing in all those characters. I'm curious which one is that. Actually just so we don't derail this thread would you mind posting the reply on that one you made about Zandronum?

EDIT: Btw those costumes look awesome, especially that mummy candy dish.

Inccubus, You should use make-up arround your eyes, it would make it better in my opinion ;)

By The Way, Awesome Costume ;)

Theres a full body shot somewhere out there but I dont personally know the chic that took it so I dont have it heh. Heres what it ended up lookin like. I got started on the hat but never got to finish it so had to go with a hood =/

That werewolf mask looks similar to mine but furrier. Is it the kind that moves when you open your mouth?

Thanks! I actually did in fact plan on using make-up and brought it with me. However by the time I finished putting the finishing touches on it I was already a little drunk. So I slapped on 2 green LEDs to the inside for an eerie green glow around the eyes. You only get a hint of the green glow in that pic. :P

Your mask came out fantastic! Also, that is the mask I used as the base for my werewolf. I tore out the foam and redid it with liquid latex and a mix of theatrical hair & artificial hair extensions. Ultimately I want to trim the hair a bit and install glowing eyes.
