Another Link for confirmation (http://www.vg247.com/2014/10/02/castlevania-harmony-of-dissonance-wii-u-virtual-console/)
Gotta love October.

And Dracula X just came out on the WiiU eShop too, looks like we can expect a lot of Castlevania games to hit the eShop this month.
-
Give me Aria of Sorrow now too and I'll be completely satisfied (until I get restless and demand Bloodlines).
Sure, I could play the GBA games on my Ouya in the exact same quality, but...eh. Guess it feels nice to continually support something with munniez. Maybe it'll convince Konami to do a ReBirth 2 or something.
-
ha, so they're giving us one week to beat a Castlevania game before the next one comes out.
-
...rakkin-frakkin (http://youtu.be/QnDxPG3KrtA?t=35s)...so many good games coming out and so much not-money in my wallet! :-[
-

This is better than having no game at all.
Besides die hard fans can easily beat the game within a week using a leisurely pace.
-
I confused Harmony of Dissonance with Harmony of Despair, so my mind was far more blown than it should have been. Nonetheless, I'm still excited.
-
Aria of Sorrow is already on the Japanese eshop, so it should definitely be coming west.
-
still 2 more Thursdays in October. so maybe AoS on the 23rd and then the rest of them on the 30th. wait, are there any more CVs that could come out on the Wii U after AoS? until they start releasing games for new systems, that is. they haven't released any DS games outside of Japan yet, have they? i think they said no Genesis games would come out on Wii U, so we might not ever get Bloodlines. still no N64 games. maybe they'll give us Belmonts Revenge and Legends on 3DS?

Looks like Aria of Sorrow is coming next week; same day as HoD!
-
If on Halloween they put out something CRAAAAZY like Dawn, Portrait, and Ecclesia, I will be all...

Fuck yes! It's always great when newcomers can play these masterpieces. :)

Got CotM and it looks and plays great. My only gripe is that I find it easy and natural to go into a save room and save the game, and then shut the power off. Bad idea since you lose all your progress if you don't first exit the virtual console. I wish power off automatically exited the VC instead. Oi, I gotta get in the habit of creating restore points frequently so if I ever did forget to exit the VC, I wouldn't have to go too far back.
edit: oh, never mind on that gripe. i guess it does save when you enter a save room. if you power off right after you save, you can access the save again from the title screen when you start it up again.
-
Can't wait to play AoS on my gamepad.
-
I now want DoS, PoR, and OoE on the Gamepad... I really really do...
-
I hope that lady gets well rehydrated.
-
It's great for Konami to get these classics out and available to more people these days. Still doesn't excuse the total lack of a new Metroidvania on the 3DS, but you have to take what scraps this company will throw at you anymore.
-
Yup. Just to let them know, we still need Castlevania.
-
This is cool. Where's my uncut version though?¿ Better have a damn bestiary at least lol
-
Lol.
This forum has a fun made up bestiary.

I guess AoS is coming NEXT week, now... Still, gives me time to: finish beating all the modes in CotM, get 200% in HoD, AND finish The Evil Within, which I'm also in the middle of.
-
I was planning on playing all three and switching whenever I beat a boss, but guess I gotta wait another week. Those games are so nice though, could play them forever.
-
ah, it's nice to go back and revisit some old friends, seeing how they stack up against their successors. I will say seeing GBA graphics blown up on a 40 inch screen is a bit jarring. At the very least CotM benefits GREATLY from a brighter screen. Seriously, it's amazing I was able to beat that game on an original GBA.
-
HoD is cool but once I got to the "2nd castle" with the obtuse map-coloring bits, I lost all interest. Someday I'll pick it back up...
I actually find it difficult to decide what's the weaker entry between Circle and Dissonance. They both have the most flaws out of the handheld titles and haven't aged as gracefully as Symphony or the DS titles.

Well, DoS had soul grinding for a good deal of the better weapons rather than more naturally acquiring them like in say AoS and it had the rather silly touch screen gimmick seals. PoR had the most level design copypasta out of any of the games due to the portraits, and OoE had the areas being too linear. Frankly I'd take HoD's chaotic level design over PoR or OoE's.
-
I was rather fond of the various modes in CotM, actually. While there was no real game change, I felt like the modes added enough difference to be enjoyable. I haven't gotten any of these on the Wii-U yet...I'm assuming they're just ports? Nothing really changed or added?
-
Yes, straight ports.
-
They look real nice in 1080p with screen smoothing on. Also the digitized manuals are fucking sweet.
-
Wow, they come with digital manual? That neat! :D
-
As a Wii-U owner, can confirm.
The CotM manual looks pretty great.
And the screen smoothing is some kind of awesome no-slowdown-hq2x-looking wizardry thing that boggles my mind.
-
I'd still rather see dem pixels, but it is an improvement over the blurry filters of a lot of other retro re-releases on other systems.
-
Only virtual console games have virtual manuals? What about digital Wii U games?
Also they are real scans or some new manual?
-
They're scans of the manuals. AFAIK, it's only done for GBA VC games.
-
Yes only GBA getting the sexy manuals.
-
Got AoS. I'm gonna feel a little bit of sadness next Thursday going to the Virtual Console store and not finding any new Castlevanias in it.

Unless they surprise blow our minds with Dawn of Sorrow, Legacy of Darkness, or Bloodlines. I don't care if Genesis games are not going to be on the Wii U, I'll will this game to come out.
-
More likely to be Belmonts Revenge on 3DS.

yes, overdo

with screen smoothing on
Oh gawd no D: Please tell me it's possible to disable that devilry

No matter how well made the smoothing is, it's still a distortion of the original graphics. If they aren't actually redrawn in HD, I see no reason not to display the game as it was created, even if it requires a little bit of black border.
-
To clarify:
The Gameboy Advance Virtual Console menu allows you to have different screen modes. I will go over them:
Video Mode - Default
Default is beautiful pixelated classic Gameboy Advance goodness. The pixels are as square as they come, and at 1080p they're very well-detailed.
Video Mode - Smoothing
Smoothing adds what I could compare to a HQ4X(?) filter. Most pixels lose their square edges and instead blend without any fuzziness. There is no apparent slowdown (unlike some hq filters in emulators).
In addition to the video modes, you can change the resolution.
Resolution = Pixel-Perfect
Pixel-Perfect takes the original GBA resolution, and multiplies it until it's a number just short of the 1080p resolution used by the Wii-U. This means that the image you're seeing on the TV is the exact same ratio that the original GBA was. The drawback is that you will have a little letterboxing in your TV, depending on what kind of resolution your TV has (obviously if your TV's max resolution is, say, 480p like an older TV, or 720p like the cheaper HDTVs with the smaller sizes, your mileage may vary with regards to the letterboxing).
Example: you have a 1080p HDTV.
The original Gameboy Advance resolution was 256x160 (3:2 aspect ratio).
The Wii-U will calculate that it needs about 6x the GBA resolution in order to fill the screen (I am assuming right now that that's what it's doing).
So the game will have a resolution of 1536 x 960, and will letterbox the leftover 384 horizontal pixels on the left/right (192 on the left and 192 on the right) and 120 vertical pixels (60 on the top and 60 on the bottom).
As I play the game, this is what it appears to be happening, but I cannot confirm.
Resolution = Full Screen
Full Screen upscales the entire GBA resolution until it matches your TV's resolution, whether it's 1080p or anything else. The bonus for this is that your TV is completely filled with the content of the GBA screen. The drawback is that you're going to be playing on a slightly distorted image than the original GBA, taking advantage of those extra 384 horizontal pixels and those 120 vertical pixels, at the cost of a little distortion.
Distortion = the pixels aren't perfectly 'squared'. They may be a little taller or a little squattier than normal, depending on the TV resolution.

So its perfect!
-
Yeah, a pixel perfect video mode is really good news, it's quite rare for console and arcade re-releases on online services to have that. I think the Wonder Boy pack was one of the first that really stood out to me.
Either way, I'll just be over here playing on my GameCube GB Player because I like to keep my GBA carts...
-
The Gamecube Gameboy player smooths the image, btw.
So you're not getting 'pixel perfect' gameplay.
The GBPlayer basically has "Smooth" and "SmoothER". :P
And it also adds huge letterboxing with that neato wallpaper behind the game screen.
-
Yup! The GB Player has a horrible image :(
-
Eh, it's not that bad. Was a cheap alternative to having an actual GBA back in the day.
-
had to check the wii u store just in case they had a castlevania surprise in there. nope, but plenty of other Halloween stuff, like Bayonetta 1&2, Costume Quest 2, Rock Zombie, (nes) Gargoyle's Quest, and (snes) Demon's Crest
-
Would be nice if they did a port of HoDespair for WiiU. And I'm not just saying that cause I really want a detailed map of the CV1 stage.
-
^This would be kinda cool, I've never had a chance to play it so this way I could play on my friend's house.
