Title: Castlevania 3D Section
Post by: darkmanx_429 on October 10, 2014, 08:32:32 AM
I PM'd Jorge this idea today.

I just want to get feedback from everyone and hear what everyone thinks!

I am a 3D Artist and I really wanted this section in the Dungeon for a while now!

We the success of the Sprite Contest, Can we pleeeease have a 3-D Section on the Dungeon.?

You may noticed that we have numerous 3D Artists and Game Designers on the forum that love Castlevania and I would love to have a place were just 3D Artists and people that may be interested in learning modeling or sculpting could network with one another!

Hell, we have several members doing Castlevania like games in 3D!

It would be a two-fold section where we could post 3D artwork related to Castlevania or provide a warehouse were you could place in-game models from the different Castlevania games. (Similar to how the spritework and request thread is ran now.)

The other part is we would also have contests each month open to 3D modelers/sculptors similar to how Polycount.com does their monthly contests.

Example's of contest would be i.e. Castlevania Weapon RE-Designs, or picking an area of lets say a 3-D Castlevania game and modeling it in any engine that that have access too (Unreal 3/4 or Unity etc.) into Environment. I.E. Take this screenshot from Curse of Darkness and make it better., or lets say Death Re-imagined  and do a new 3D Character Model etc.

Dungeonites would also be able to post their works in progress for contests and such for feedback.

Concurrently, you could even run similar contest's in the Sprite Contest section!

What do you think,  can we make this happen? It could increase even more participation in the dungeon for sure!

P.S. I would be more than happy to run the section, if you guys need additional help maintaining it!

I'd love to see what everyone can make, i love the 2D sprites made by you people, so i believe that it would be cool to have a 3D section.

Thanks you Nemesis!

I really want to expand the Dungeon to 3-D and get this section off the ground.

It's a severely missing piece on the Dungeon.

Also, we could use alternate awards from the sprite contest as 1st Place awards!

I'm currently studying to be a 3d artist so I'd be pretty interested in seeing a section like this.
To help get people involved you could put a sticky thread in the section with links to free software like Blender and a few beginner tutorials.

3D is even potentially relevant to anyone interested in making 2D castlevania fan games because developers like Arc System Works and SNK have incorporated 3d into there sprite process with quite impressive results.

Once there is enough awareness to this thread, I'll stake it on top.
The only reason I'm not staking it now is because then it might be overlooked.
I have to see which designs I still have in my drive.  I know I've made stuff in 3D for CV...

...what is this engine format you speak of?

3d is so cool. I'd love to see works done in 3d.

Thanks Jorge!

Are you familiar with Unreal? Well, I use Unreal Development Kit 3.  It's a game engine that was developed my Epic Games. ALOT of current  and next generation titles that you have played have used this engine to make their games with. Currently it is at Unreal Engine 4. You can download UDK free from the net: https://www.unrealengine.com/products/udk/ (https://www.unrealengine.com/products/udk/)

Some people also like to use Unity 3D (which is also free)  to create games with: http://unity3d.com/ (http://unity3d.com/)

I personally prefer UDK but to each his on.

Hope this helps!

If you have those 3D works can you post them on this thread? That is exactly one of the things that what I want this thread to be used for.

These are a few screens from our game. The scale of the story of our game has hundreds of assets, so its been a ton of work.

Good stuff! Exactly the kind of stuff I want this thread to be.

I have to finish up one project that I am half way on and then I will officially be back making assets for EOE.

Be sure to hit me up and let me know if you need any specific environmental needs.

Right now, I am just going to pull off those concept art you provided me with.

What is the best format that you would like for me to export them out with? OBJ? FBX?

Let me know!

Also, do you have a Scale figure that you are using for scale of everything?

I have one for UDK that I import in Maya.

It may not matter as you could just rescale any objects I make anyways.

But it would be nice to know! lol

I suppose I should've been more specific:
Which filetype extension is compatible with the Unity or Unreal environments?
The files I work with natively save to Rhino3D *.3dm format.
I could convert 'em but that usually makes problems happen.

I usually do the model, and have someone else take care of the texturing though.

I prefer FBX but OBJ work as well for UDK so does ASE.

You can use Blender too:

http://krisredbeard.wordpress.com/tutorials/tutorial-blender-to-udk-player-model/ (http://krisredbeard.wordpress.com/tutorials/tutorial-blender-to-udk-player-model/)

Here is a thread for Rhino 3D:

https://forums.epicgames.com/threads/917526-pure-Rhino-to-UDK-pipeline (https://forums.epicgames.com/threads/917526-pure-Rhino-to-UDK-pipeline)

I am not really familiar with Unity so I can really comment on that.

Hmm, just read that thread.
I can indeed export to fbx with Rhino.  Scaling (as mentioned in that thread) is not a problem as I can set measurements on my own as long as I know the output.  And during the import to Unity, they can resize if necessary.

Interesting.  While my models aren't nearly as detailed as the ones above, I'm more about doing Locales.

Well you did mentioned that you normally get someone else to do your textures?

Maybe you should work on your texture pipeline.

I don't know how it using Rhino, but I do know if I find my textures are blurry using Maya or 3ds Max I have to adjust my UV's in my 0 to 1 space in the UV Texture editor or I need to increase my MAP size so that it displays more resolution.

Also, you should look up making your own custom Materials or Shaders. I don't know that process for Rhino but I am sure you can figure it out.

Your lighting plays a part as well.

Hopefully my suggestions can help you out in getting your textures in the right direction.

Usually I just make the model.  I don't worry about the textures until the very last minute.
I can draw elements and lay them out on a scene, etc.

If you recall a while back, I made the 3D Clocktower that Esco ended up using in his Symphony of the Night engine.  It was rather easy.

I suggest this thread be just for 3d consultations, 3d showcases, etc.

The 3d contest is on a separate thread.
Those interested in the contest should please go here: http://castlevaniadungeon.net/forums/index.php/topic,7557.0.html (http://castlevaniadungeon.net/forums/index.php/topic,7557.0.html)

Wow, dude that is very impressive.

Could use some more dynamic lighting to really show off your details dude.

Do you have emissive maps on the glyphs?

Not Castlevania, but still in the vein of badass vampire hunters.

Base is almost done. Need to touch up the hair on the head and about to start the tattoo's. Then the texturing and map process will begin!

Everything was sculpted in ZBrush from scratch starting with Z spheres.

I am going to model some shades in maya and import those in as well.

this is a continuation of this thread:
http://castlevaniadungeon.net/forums/index.php/topic,7851.0.html (http://castlevaniadungeon.net/forums/index.php/topic,7851.0.html)
Since DarkmanX asked I'm going to start posting all my progress here.

(https://castlevaniadungeon.net/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi260.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fii35%2FOverking1%2FSonia_new_topology_zpsxo1y3xiv.png&hash=9d7e9950d7ac5589f2e5bbbc85d7eb6a)

I decided to scrap my old model and start again. This time around I'm using topology similar to a few Japanese 3d artists I've seen online and I am much happier with the way it is looking.

Next up I need to model her ear then start her hair, at which point she should start looking more like Sonia I hope.

Modelled a basic ear but I'm putting off creating her hair for now - I can't decide on the best way to go about modelling it.

The body isn't final yet there is still plenty of work to do on her chest and overall proportions.

I'm not 100% happy with the topology but I think I'm going to call the body pretty much done otherwise I’ll never finish her. There are still some tweaks I need to make to the proportions yet though.

Wow looks cool..will she be a vampire huntress? I would agree i htink the build here is well done. And you did this in blender? Yeah that program can is complex. Mainly i use for import/export. Still it can be very useful for a number ofthings.  Either way looks very sharp!!

Man Rhino is seriously the shit. I used to use it all the time for Uni as you could build a 3d model up from a sketch plan or cad plan then literally use "section" and "make 2d" to give you your sections and elevations which you could gussy up in cad.

My favourite thing to do was cut a section, set up a camera, fill in the cut surfaces with a solid red and then render in V-Ray.
You'd get magazine quality renders providing you applied correct materials etc. Then again you could always export to 3ds max and use V-Ray or Mental Ray for some kick ass renders.. Sorry getting nostalgic.

Jorge, do you think there'd be a section under 3d for environments? There's one I can recall which I believe would apply to Castlevania I wouldn't mind putting up at some stage.

Here is my suggested that Jorge pretty much told me when I wanted to do a 3-D Section. Zangetsu go ahead and make a thread for the 3D environment page and then contact Jorge to sticky it in the appropriate spot.

That is a great idea!
