I defiinitely missed something while under my rock. ‘.’
I really loved flying all over the place for the child of light update and constantly just staying out of reach of bosses. Simple pleasures, but nevertheless worthwhile given the pain Alfred and such gave me my first time through

Fan Stuff / HUGE assistance request: mapping CV3j's audio RAM
« Last post by TheouAegis on July 16, 2022, 12:43:49 AM »
And before you chime in with suggestions along the lines of, "Download the NSF file, open it in FamiTracker, and compare values," I've tried that. It kind of helped me map out CV1u, but this ain't an NES game I'm trying to map. CV3j (aka Akumajou Densetsu) has the VRC6 audio, which I figured would be a simple matter of studying a two or three more paragraphs on NESDev to learn how it worked, then tracing the register writes. I mean, it worked for me in CV1u. Within minutes of tracing audio routines, I encountered the tip of the CV3j Audio Iceberg.

At first all seemed well. I could tell at a glance this wasn't just a rehash of the CV1 audio code, but I was still able to easily enough recognize a couple similar subroutines. So I traced it from the initial audio track write, but when I got to the audio track initialization code, I was met with a handful of variables here, another handful of variables there, and yet more even farther away. This... was unexpected to me. CV1's variables were all neatly packaged in a tight bundle of #60 bytes or so, but the variables in CV3j were scattered far and wide. Some were in the $1XX range, some in the $3XX range nestled among enemy variables, and more still in the $6XX range. So, I cracked my knuckles and bore down on the code, tracking each of those initialized variables. Those weren't the only variables being used, however.

I've been fiddling and faddling with a few variables here and there. I'd like to think I have at least made a little bit of progress. I mapped the order of audio channels in the RAM (VRC6 Pulse 1, VRC6 Pulse 2, VRC6 Saw, BGM Square 1, BGM Square 2, SFX Square 1, SFX Square 2, Drumkit, and Noise), identified the core duty-volume and period variables, and even identified variables that did fun stuff like volume dampening, slowing down payback, and I think even one for making vibrato. And yet, I'm not even halfway done!

I would love for someone with some 6502, 2A03, and SYNTHESIZER PROGRAMMING KNOWLEDGE (although I don't think I've seen any special VRC6 code yet) to help me try to crack CV3j's audio coding. You read that right: I think I need someone with synthesizer programming knowledge. I'm pretty certain I've been staring at waveforms for the past 24 hours! I'm not certain, but I think I also just saw code suggesting some of the waveforms are interconnected, which would just be a whole other level of complexity not showing up in FamiTracker! My brain is frazzled!!  :-[ :'(

Last year I had a fun idea for the 20th Anniversary of Duh Horrible Spam Uhtacks of this date in 2002, but Life had other plans and gimped my move, leaving me nowhere near able to coordinate such a thing.

Timing didn’t work out for shooting a quick video in place of this text, either.

Until better days: Merry 7|15, raugh out roud!

Been playing a little Panzer Paladin on Switch. Somehow this game completely passed me by until recently, and so I missed the Limited Run Games pre-order window from last year. It's a game I'd definitely like to own physically, so I think I'll track down a copy on eBay. Super amazing pixel art and some of the best platforming of recent years. If I were to compare it to anything, it's giving me Shovel Knight and Cyber Shadow vibes, with Metal Warriors mech action with the ability to hop out of your mech and use a laser whip, lol.
Fan Stuff / I mapped out a lot of CV1's RAM, but there's still more work to do

Shameless plug for the work I just did on Data Crystal's wiki:

If anyone can fill me in on anything I missed or couldn't figure out, or just plain overlooked, please let me know!

After a time of thinking it over I decided to buy Assassin's Creed Valhalla. I was against it at first due to how badly written Odyssey's DLC Fate of Atlantis was (the Layla Hassad character being the prime culprit here). Also hearing about settlement crafting didn't make me all that excited either due to how messy it was in Fallout 4. Fortunately in AC Valhalla it is nothing like that. And I am actually enjoying running around in post-Roman England (I'm half expecting to find Excalibur somewhere. And why not since it's probably an Isu artifact). Several features from the original games have made a comeback such as hiding in plain site from the authorities. Being able to hide in hay piles and the like was a feature sadly missing in Odyssey but they brought it back here. I have noticed that the play style is a lot more slower-paced then in previous games. You do need to take your time to build up your character and the port of call you call home in order to proceed with the game story. Unfortunately not everyone can be dispatched via assassination. I tried it on one of those hulking heavily armored thugs of the Order of Ancients and no assassin indicator was flagged. Damn. It. I don't know how big the game is yet so I'll just have to continue onward to find out.

Oh, and another thing; The graphics. They remind my of PC-styled games rather then what we typically see in past AC titles. More subdued colors and metallics give it that Witcher 3/Diablo look. It's kinda interesting and fresh to see.
