Title: "Translation Request" Thread
Post by: Nagumo on January 10, 2013, 07:59:08 AM
I thought it might be interesting to have a thread where people can post requests for translations of offical Castlevania-related media. You can request anything from manuals, guidebooks, novels etc.

If your requested is accepted it would of course be very handy if you could provide the translator with a scan or a link. There's no guarantee that someone will accept your request of course, but it can't hurt to try.

Also, feel free to post if you're not able to provide a translation yourself, but you know someone who might want to help.

My request:

Part of a Castlevania novel. It's around 30 pages with very large illustrations on most pages.

I paid someone to translate the novel for me. It was kind off a waste of money though, because although you can roughly understand what is being said, the sentences are not very coherent. A lot of the translation work is already done though, so if anyone wants to take a look at the novel and the rough translation, and improve upon it, I could share it with you guys. I could understand the general outline of the story and it's very interesting so far.

Oh may I see the novel and the rough translation? I am interested in helping. (My Japanese is not at the native level though. I have a JLPT certification of level 2 about 6 years ago. It is equivalent to the N2 level in the revised JLPT. However since I am no longer learning Japanese, I have a feeling that my level could have dropped to N3.)
Plus I really want to read the novel.

The novel requires an advanced knowledge of Japanese. But i'm not giving up. It would take quite some time for me to translate.

Thanks for helping Shiroi! I felt bad backing out from helping Nagumo on this novel (a lot of iRL drama, so I ended up not having any time to work on it) so I'm glad she's getting some help. :)

Alright, I managed to get hands on 8 extra parts of this story. Sadly not in chronological order. Anyway, I noticed Simon sports a fancy beard in this story as well. That's an interesting coincidence.

I can have a look in the roughly translated part? While I learned english I've understood some incoherent things that a person that fully understands english simply cant. Do you know these guys that writes all the sort of things wrong in the internet? They simple think  that this makes sense to the world because it makes sense toi himself. I retained some part of this ignorance while I upgraded my english because I knew that it could come in handy sometime.

Sure, just tell me what your email is and I'll send it to you.

I noticed something interesting in one of the magazines that contain this story. I spotted some artwork done by Kojima which predates her Castlevania stuff by 3 years. It's from the Wizardry series.

Title: Novel Translation Updates
Post by: Shiroi Koumori on April 01, 2013, 12:58:53 AM
I think this is the proper place to post this.

Firstly, I would like to apologize to those who are waiting for the "Demon's Blood Nightmare's Blood" translation. I will temporarily put this project on hold due to the reason of me being frustrated at the extremely slow pace of my translation and the metaphysical points of the novel just kills me.

I have decided to gain some experience points by translating the much easier "Ricordanza of the God's Abyss". As of this point in my reading whilst translating, the novel feels like a real castlevania game. It moves at a fast pace and the description of the castle seems to be lifted out of the games. I am currently at the [Chapel] and I think it reminds me of SOTN up to the spectral sword.

I will not post the Ricordanza translation until I finish the entire novel since the intro has something to do with the ending (I think). And also to give me time to polish and edit my translation.

Since Ricordanza is the light novel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light_novel), translation may be easier than Akuma no Chi Chi no Akumu.

Thanks for the translation notes. I'll incorporate those in the translation.
Oh and Slogra was also mentioned in p-330. "Berrigan" was with Gaibon so I knew it was Slogra. hehehe. Why did they change its name?

Oops, I had overlooked it. Probably Berrigan is Pelican's wordplay. I surmise that it is because it resembles the person's name.

Hmmm most likely since Slogra resembles a Pelican's skeleton.

I'd like to request a translation of the in-game text of "Akumajō Dracula: Shikkoku Taru Zensōkyoku".

Okay, I can't find any footage of the Japanese prologue (though that would be easy to bring up for anyone that has the game), but here are vids for other points in the game:

Sonia meets Alucard (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezg15VHxt8E)

Sonia meets Dracula plus the endings (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcnIe0lGwXI)

Normal ending (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-h-kk1Tq8E) - Is the dialogue or cliffside text any different than in the full ending?

They are almost the same though I compared Japanese with English. It is not necessary to translate.

That's interesting. So the Sonia/Alucard dialogue is the same in Japanese, complete with the terms of affection? Because the storyline in the Japanese instruction manual indicates Sonia set off on her quest to kill Dracula on the same night that she met Alucard.

It's not official media, but could you transcribe/translate the cutscenes from Rusty? There's a playthrough here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwKnV9-8i6E), and it should be easy enough to skip from one cutscene to the next.

Once, when the land of Transylvania was dominated by the climate of Monte Carlo, by one man's power sealed the 300 year flows of magic... however, that power has declined and numerous beasts had started to wake.

From that time, beautiful maidens from the villages that dot the countryside have started to disappear with greater frequency. Villagers have whispered that since these ladies have never returned, soon the Count would be revived...

So many have been killed... How should reconstruct this village?

6:13
Such pitiful children... their relatives weren't even here?

6:18
The village chief has taken over but...

6:24
Listen everyone, the funeral is the end of it. Return home and start doing repairs.

6:30
Now, no one will save them... Come to my house to give up.

6:37
I meant,... It is not like they are already dead. They will come back for
sure!

6:42
Sack of potatoes...
Oh? You are?

6:49
Excuse me but... Are you the village chief?

6:54
Indeed, I am Santos, the village chief...

6:59
I am Rustea Suplincool. (pardon if I translated the name wrong...)

7:03
This village was also attacked...

7:11
The sun is still up and suddenly a group of monsters destroyed the village... and the girls were taken away.

7:17
The funeral of the villagers that were killed had just finished.

7:23
Is that so... If I had arrived a little earlier...

No... They wouldn't care...

Girl, your strong?

Eh?

This is Mina...

Ryoko is one of the kids who were also taken away. She is very beautiful.

I have raised some money for you...

8:29
We also beg of you Suplincool. Please help save our daughters?

8:44
I don't need the money.
I came here bacause I was chasing them. Moreover, please call me "Rusty". Village chief, where are the beasts headed?

8:49
West, beyond the mountains is a haunted castle.

I have been obsessed with evil insects...

14:21
By the way, I am looking for a girl named Ryoko. If you know anything please tell me?

14:23
Eh? Ryoko? Could it be that she was with the girls that were taken from the village a little while ago?

14:26
If that's so, I'm sure they were taken to the castle...

14:29
The monsters of Bradthorn Castle had just kidnapped girls from the nearby village.

14:33
My village was also destroyed by those monsters... Please destroy the enemy!

Please translate Sonia's bio in the Japanese manual:

Sonia Belmont
age: 17 years old

A vampire hunter woman from the house of Belmont who is a vanguard against the other world (underworld?).
She learned how to handle the whip from her grandfather and also learned the wisdom on the art of detecting beings that are invisible to humans.

Castlevania : Le Manuscrit maudit

Translation from its original French to English.
This seems interesting (though it's basically a Castlevania Anthology book akin to Zelda's Hyrule Historia).

I would like to request a translation of the story section from Vampire Killer's manual.

After the move of most Germanen, most of the Old Cities of Europe are destroyed, which allow the Middle Age City of 12th to13th century to build. Transylvania, which was build at the late 10th century, was one of the older City that received many influences from Germanen.

In Transylvania, there was a legend about The Hero Christopher. It says that Hero Christopher sealed away Count Dracula, The Dark Lord that awakened by those with evil hearts once every century.

One hundred years after Count Dracula was sealed away. In an Easter night, lightning strike and brightened the darkness. A signal of the Lord of Vampire is once again resurrected. The cities is again haunted by demons and dark disciples.

To save this crisis, a young man who carries the blood of Hero Christopher Belmont, Simon, is now holding the special whip he received from father, and set foot into the castle that dominated by evil...

It's hard to translate Japanese to English, for their grammar are inside out. My grammar wasn't good enough, but at least they are readable. (I hope)

Thank you very much. There's a translation on the Castlevania Realm that is very vague and nonsensical in certain parts. This makes way more sense.

I searched and nothing so I thought I could ask here if anyone ever made a translation of this manual of Akumajou Densetsu:
http://www.vgmuseum.com/mrp/NewCV/manual-jcv3.htm (http://www.vgmuseum.com/mrp/NewCV/manual-jcv3.htm)

There's been a translation of the story section, but nothing else. With my current skill level, it would take a long time to translate everything, but is there a particular section you would like to see translated?

Hello! New here to the forums, but watched it as one of my favorite sites for a long time and came upon this thread. I too wish a translation for this song and for the song 'The Legend of the Moon (Original)' in same soundtrack. If someone can translate it, I've provided a scan of the two songs from the booklet (if allowed) as I do own the Akumajo Dracula Best Music Collections Box and have the booklet of it with a page in said booklet containing the lyrics. I hope this is okay & hope to have helped a bit!

I tried to translate both of them but I have to admit it's too difficult for me. These songs contain a lot of flowerly language so it's a bit hard to grasp the meaning sometimes. The best I can do is provide translations of the lines I'm sure about.

As you probably already noticed, the person who is singing this song is supposed to be Sara. This is I think why the names of various characters make an appearance in this song.  Because her soul is contained within the Vampire Killer she technially met all these people. Also note the order in which the characters are mentioned seems to correspond to the release order of the games. Though there are exceptions here and there.

Cross of Fate is a whole lot more difficult. However, the impression I get is that the person who sings this song is supposed to be Soma.

Maybe Shiroi could take a shot at this?

Oh, I so hope so as I've seen Shiroi translate various other things here very nicely! >_<

But, still, thanks so much for this translation as I was trying to pick up the some of the characters names Sara mentions in this song, but failed on many of them! It's interesting to see that characters like the Master Librarian, Ferryman, & the Mysterious Merchant were mentioned giving them a nice recognition as much as the main characters. And I totally agree with you regarding Sara knowing all of them in one way or another with her soul being part of the Vampire Killer and all. With this song, it's like you're seeing/hearing the viewpoint of the 'soul of the whip', which makes it really cool & interesting.

And for Cross of Fate, I also get the impression it's Soma whose singing it, which it would be awesome if it was. I totally love this song!

Once again thanks for this rough translation! I really appreciate it! :)

YAY DONE!

Cross of Fate

Called from the garden of darkness
Endless sleep    Overcome

When the death of the sun comes
Inviting the host of that soul
Binding that purified hand
Cross of fate

Unreachable crevice in the heart
Conceal the shadow of someone unknown
The rejecting heart's thread
Reeling in
(The last two lines should be read as "Reeling in the rejecting heart" Whoohoo~ fishing reference!)

Inside the inferno
Someone seeking strength is
Embracing the demon's illusion
Causing grief

Increasing one's power
Is not possible by one's own hand
The thought of protecting your loved ones
Changes into strength

Even if the body is defeated
If you believe
Those precautionary words
Will surely protect you

Resurrected heart of hell
Shake it off    Now    AH

You have my ETERNAL gratitude!!! You're an angel (and Soma's too, lol)! XD (https://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/castlevania/images/e/e5/Sky-FishAnimation.gif/revision/latest?cb=20150829003703)

I've searched, asked elsewhere, looked all over & eventually almost gave up trying to find a translation for these two songs - especially of Cross of Fate. I love how the lyrics in Cross of Fate does a reference to what seems to be Soma's internal struggle with the realization of possessing Dracula's very soul. Legend of the Moon gives a unique viewpoint of Sara's thoughts & feelings, as well as what was her final fate. So cool to finally have these lyrics translated! I eventually will share these translations on my tumbler page, if you don't mind (whenever I get the chance), but will definitely credit you for it & link it back here, too, to give this awesome forums more recognition. Thanks again!  ;D

Heh, I need to thank Aria, Shiroi and Nagumo for this. I came to this thread to ask for translations for these exact same songs.

Its interesting that they choose the name Cross of Fate for the second music, since Cross is also Cruz in some languages. (and while some must not know, Soma also can reach the same result. In portuguese for example, the word "soma" means plus/addition, as in math. So its the "+" sign, or better saying, a cross. This always amused me since AoS :P )

Hello,

I was just wondering if anyone has ever translated Super Castlevania IV's/Akumajou Dracula's Japanese intro text?

All I really know is that the bit about Simon Belmont 'once again' setting out to defeat Dracula is a pure fabrication by the original translators. If that's all they changed, however, then it should be a simple matter of altering the text in a hex editor to produce something more faithful (space allowing of course).

I ask because I've recently been making these 'relocalization' patches for several Castlevania games, including HoD (https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/3831/), AoS (https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/3855/), and the original Castlevania/Akumajou Dracula on the NES (https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/3876/), having been inspired by both the always increasing versatility of LagoLunatic's DSVania Editor (http://www.romhacking.net/utilities/1271/) and theplottwists's Umbra of Sorrow project (http://castlevaniadungeon.net/forums/index.php?topic=7852.0), the latter of which has just completely blown me away in just about every aspect.

Hello Spiffy! I think I could help you. Although I'm not a Japanese speaker, I can tell that this intro is a reduced version of the story present on the manual; I do happen to have it translated more in line with how the game's intro tells it. I hope it's useful to you (and I'd ask the Japanese speakers out there to correct something if needed):

"Once every one-hundred years, when the power of this world is weakened, the Demon King will be revived by the prayer of humans using evil power. And with each resurrection, his magic grows stronger."

In the past, the Demon King has revived in several forms. However, his ambition of covering the world in darkness and reigning in the night was always shattered by the heroic Belmont Clan.

The Belmonts had always defeated the Demon King in duels to the death, banishing him from the living world for another hundred years; when those years were over, Transylvania would once again suffer with continuous disaster...

One day, evil covered the town, and a lightning strike silenced it. In that very moment, the dark powers have brought back the powerful Demon King, and along with him, a powerful demon army.

To help solve this crisis, Simon, the young heir of the Belmont clan, has vowed to liberate the human world. Although overwhelmed by his responsibility, Simon marches to the Demon Castle with the whip containing mysterious powers inherited from his ancestors in hand.

Thanks!

This, along with this (http://www.vgmuseum.com/mrp/cv4/documents/CV4J.txt) translation of AD's manual story helped me out a lot. There was very little space to work with simply by using a hex editor, so I had to abridge it somewhat and replace some terms with shorter substitutes:

(As you can see, this was made using this romhack of SCIV (https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/2928/)).

Without any means of increasing the speed of the text crawl or using custom pointers, this is probably about as good as I'll ever get it.

I have a friend who has lived in Japan a good part of his life, he is interested in doing the translation.

I also own parts of the second and third novel. I wouldn't mind trying to collect it in its entirely, though.

This ad I posted on RHDN's Help Wanted subforum has gone unanswered for almost a year, so I'll repost it here and see if I have better luck this time:

"Hello, I'm the guy who made the Localization Fix for Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance (http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/3831/). I've set my sights on releasing a sort of 'final' or definitive version of my patch (as well as the one for AoS (http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/3855/)) before the year is out.  The one thing I would really like to focus on for this final release is whether or not the in-game cutscene dialogue needs any further revisions or touch-ups in order to be both closer to the original Japanese script and to improve its overall readability/flow.

I've already made a few changes in the previous version(s), mostly for the reasons I've already stated. However, I'm certainly no native speaker, and I've probably made some mistakes. So now, I'm humbly asking anyone with the appropriate expertise and experience to help me compare the original Japanese dialogue script with the updated English script that I'm currently using for the latest version of the patch.

As far as resources go, there doesn't seem to be a complete dump or transcription of the Japanese script anywhere on the internet at the moment. The Script page for HoD on the Castlevania Wiki (http://castlevania.wikia.com/wiki/Castlevania:_Harmony_of_Dissonance/Script) contains links to a Youtube playthrough of the Japanese version of the game corresponding to each section of the story, which is somewhat inconvenient but still the best available option. Transcripts of certain scenes relating to Maxim's character are also available here (http://bausuro.cocolog-nifty.com/gabugabu/2012/02/post-c493.html), but that's obviously all that the author covered. There's also a Translation Guide on GameFAQs (https://www.gamefaqs.com/gba/554981-castlevania-harmony-of-dissonance/faqs/17572) that contains a rough, literal translation of the game's original Japanese dialogue, but I can't completely guarantee its accuracy.

Any interested parties can just hit me with a PM and I'll be very happy to share and discuss any information regarding previous or future possible script revisions in the form of documents/text files or emulator save states."

About a year ago I translated all of the cutscenes and had someone else double check it for me. I have attached the file to this post. The left most column is the transcript of the original Japanese dialogue. The right most column is my own translation and the middle column is the translation of the double checker.

Give it a read and let me know what you think.

Here's a copy of the translated script, with both the official English localization as well as my stab at it in their own columns. Sorry I had to delete your own translation effort, but it was the quickest and most expedient way to pump something out.  ;D

If you and your proofreader (or anyone else) can provide me with a few more translations, such as:

- The opening intro crawl
- Miscellaneous player actions/messages (such as setting down furniture, using the Floodgate Key, locked doors)
- Additional dialogue for the Mysterious Merchant
- The original Japanese area names

...then this thing should be just about ready for prime time once I insert/revise the text and review it over a full playthrough. I can't thank you enough for what you've done so far!

大理石の廊下: Marble Corridor

夢幻の間: Hall of Illusions/Hall of Mirages/Hall of Phantasms (take your pick) I decided on "hall" here because room sounds like just an ordinary room while "hall" has the connotation of "big and imposing" which I think is suitable for this area.

悪魔城宝物庫: Demon Castle Treasury (Since official translation never use "demon castle", I'm not sure if you want to keep that for your localization).

悪魔城最上部: Demon Castle Top Floor

I'll have to think long and hard about the others.

No worries, I managed to find all the area titles on clearfeather's Japanese Castlevania website (https://web.archive.org/web/20181108093354/http://www.geocities.jp/clearfeathers/concerto/index.html), so I'll see what I can come up with after a quick 'machine' (AKA jisho.org) translation:

Format: Official English -> Japanese (In-Game English Translation) -> My Localization

- Entrance -> Entrance -> Entrance (no work needed here)
- Marble Corridor -> 大理石の廊下 (Corridor of Marble) -> Marble Corridor (ditto)
- Room of Illusion -> 夢幻の間 (Room of Illusion) -> Hall of Illusion (good call on this one, plus it's obviously more than one room)
- The Wailing Way -> 燭哭参道 (The Approach of Deplore) -> The Wailing Way (no need to change this one)
- Shrine of the Apostates -> 背教祀廟 (Heretic's Grave) -> Tomb of the Heretics (place is an open-air mausoleum, so went with 'tomb' - not sure if I should stick with 'Apostates' or 'Heretics', see below)
- Castle Treasury -> 悪魔城宝物庫 (Castle's Treasury) -> Castle Treasury ('Demon Castle' prefix is a bit redundant in English, so dropped it)
- Skeleton Cave -> 骸骨魔窟 (Skeleton Cave) -> Skeleton Nest (kanji and area context allude towards the idea of a breeding/meeting ground for something vile, like a spider, so went with 'nest')
- Castle Top Floor -> 悪魔城最上部 (Castle Tower) -> Castle Top Floor (same with 'Castle Treasury')
- Luminous Cavern -> ひかりごけの洞窟 (Moss-Grown Cave) -> Schistostega Caverns ('ひかりごけ' specifically referring to luminous moss (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schistostega), so used its scientific name for clarity and flow - still iffy on this one, might change it back)
- Sky Walkway -> 空中回廊 (Corridor in the Air) -> Floating Gallery ('Cloister' just doesn't sound right, and it's the Chapel area that contains the actual church part, so went with the word's secondary meaning)
- Chapel of Dissonance / 異端礼拝堂 (Chapel of the Heretic) -> Chapel of Apostasy (torn between 'Chapel of Apostasy' and 'Chapel of Heresy' and I don't want to re-use one synonym between two area titles)
- Aquaduct of Dragons / 架橋龍水道 (Waterway of Aquatic) -> Aquaduct of Dragons (official translation is accurate and appropriate)
- Clock Tower / 因果律機械塔 (Clockwork Tower) -> Clockwork Tower (plenty of individual clocks, but I don't ever remember actually seeing the main 'unit' - Japanese also specifically refers to 'clockwork' and not 'clock')

I'm still a little iffy on a few lines in the edited translation document I posted, so I'll keep working at it until I'm satisfied. I want it to be both accurate while still flowing well and sounding appropriate for each character. I'm dimly aware that there are various different speech patterns and archetypes in the Japanese language, but I doubt I'll be able to identify them if you asked me, so I'm hoping I haven't made any individual character sound more formal or colloquial than they appropriately should (as indicated by the original Japanese text).

Oh, my rewritten ones, of course! I'm a bit of a perfectionist, as you've probably already noticed. Tomorrow, I'll hopefully have posted a final version of my rewrite for you (and hopefully your proofreader as well) to look over. Like I said, I want to maintain a balance of accuracy (to the spirit/general sense of the Japanese script) and naturalness/readability.

Also, it looks like I was wrong in my last post: the clock tower is visible. It's in full view on the Castle Top Floor (whoops!), so 'Clock Tower' it is, then.

Just two minor things:

"もっとも城を欲したのは、后からの精神だが..。" "もっとも" means "although" here. The original translation definitely got that wrong. Otherwise it would have been written as "最も". Here's the grammar page (https://japanesetest4you.com/flashcard/learn-jlpt-n2-grammar-%E3%82%82%E3%81%A3%E3%81%A8%E3%82%82-motto-mo/).

"つまり、お主の親友とやらの心に消えてもらう必要があるのだ。" Did you translate "とやら" as "if you still consider him to be such" because of context or because you thought it sounded better? Because I don't think that interpretation is supported by the text itself. I personally interpreted that line as Death belittling Juste and Maxim's relationship.

By the way, what do you think is Death's motivation for merging this castle? Has Maxim's evil side become the "new Dracula" and is he carrying out his wishes? Or would merging the castles somehow result in the ressurection of the original Dracula? (But why would that be neccessary?) I never was able to find a clear answer to that question.

Yeah, I was wondering why Death was questioning such an obvious and logical occurrence, but your correction made me realize that he was simply conceding the idea that only the wicked spirit desired a castle. So the rewritten line should be something like "Granted, it was but the latter spirit who desired one at all…"

Quote

Ah, so more like dry sarcasm, then. So something like "In short, it is imperative that your dear, cherished friend be rid of his spirit." (Still sounds a little clunky, though - might keep at this one)

Quote

Or would merging the castles somehow result in the ressurection of the original Dracula? (But why would that be neccessary?) I never was able to find a clear answer to that question.

From my understanding, by allowing the 'consciousness' of Dracula's disembodied remains to gain to full control of Maxim's body, Death would then have both a powerful vessel for Dracula's complete resurrection and a stable base/arcane focal point in which to achieve said resurrection - the fully merged castle, which was brought into existence by the same residual arcane energies contained in Dracula's remains. Dracula's actual soul is still in limbo (or the Demon Realm or whatever) at this point and requires further ritual and sacrifice to incarnate it in our realm. I figure that if you have both a powerful host body literally animated by the residual magic of the being you're trying to resurrect, as well as a demonic base of operations that was also brought into existence by said residual magic, then I guess you're only a chant or blood sacrifice away from summoning the real deal. I guess that's what Death meant by 'preparing a temporary castle'. There's still more work to be done after snuffing out Maxim's soul and finally getting a stable and complete castle to work with.

EDIT: Now that you mention it, the castle featured in the game is not actually Castlevania/Dracula's Castle itself, but an imperfect copy. Maybe Death is banking on the real Demon Castle to poof into existence once he fully resurrects his master, as is it's known to do. Then he could just cast aside Maxim's crappy imitation castle and get himself situated in the genuine article. The phrase 'temporary castle' makes even more sense now!

With the help of another Japanese Youtube playthrough (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MEte2dzGaCs), I've noted down the remaining bits of Merchant dialogue as well as the in-game messages that appear when obtaining items and performing various actions. My own sketchy translations are also included in the document, with an empty column for proofreading and corrections, of course.

After that, it's just the intro text crawl and menu descriptions (pause, sound test, file menu, etc.) that need to be reviewed.

EDIT: Found a Japanese transcription of the introductory text crawl and have appended it to the document (I'm a bit too intimidated to attempt my own translation, so I left the column blank)

Looks great so far!

In regards to the area names, I'll probably have to post another help ad on RHDN, or here even. I've located and ripped the LZ77-compressed graphics for all the English area title graphics as well as the palette data (pal/tpl file formats and the hex offset). The only problem is that I'm certainly no pixel artist and I'm still wrangling with both Tile Layer Pro and YY-CHR. The former offers a helpful 'wrap-around' function when re-sizing the drawing window (which greatly helps with the way these specific graphics are laid out in the raw files). YY-CHR lacks this feature but is far more user friendly when it comes to actually editing each individual pixel. It could be Christmas by the time I'm done getting my head around either of them, so as much as it pains me to do it, I'll think I'll need to get in touch with a more experienced pixel artist.

I know this will be a big undertaking. Thank you!
