Title: punching is considered easier to KO than kicking
Post by: affinity on February 04, 2018, 02:33:55 PM
some think punching has more KO ability than kicking, though it depends.  like kicks can argue that stronger than punches, however punches are more direct and stronger in a sense, and can be considered faster than kicks, so velocity x strength = more KO ability than slower type of attack.    though it can be situational

Kicking is actually a really bad fighting move unless you're the right build for it and using a discipline that emphasizes it. It tends to be slower, it takes you off your center of gravity and therefore makes you easier to topple, and in the hands (feet?) of the less experienced it's less accurate because our skeletons just didn't develop with kicks as a combat technique in mind, which also steps into the realm of not being able to fully project strength that way.

Kicking delivers a LOT of power but only in certain ways and angles, and the extra reach afforded by our very slightly longer legs isn't exactly an advantage.

In other words: kick 'em while they're down, definitely (you'll get good results), but otherwise try to avoid kicking if at all possible unless you're a master of a martial art that really prizes kicks.

Stick to punching. Your body is designed much more  to favor that kind of movement so it's easier to aim and project most of your strength, preserves balance, and it's far easier to learn how to fight with your fists anyway.

And then bring a knife to a fistfight and a gun to a knife fight.

And then avoid fighting entirely if it can be helped.

Obviously, if you are a video game character, disregard everything I just wrote. Do whatever the hell you like, video game characters.

this is half-true, the coiling capacity in the legs and energy potential is massive

try sprinting with your hands, for instance

know capoeira, can confirm, especially the bit about throwing off balance if you don't know what you're doing

Your legs on average are 70% of your body's overall muscle mass. You gotta use them knees.

Yup. Using the knees over the entire leg will net you better results if you don't have any actual combat training. A good, strong thrust with a knee to someone's core will seriously stun them.

Kicks are difficult and usually slow. However, if used right they can be very effective in wearing out an opponent. In Thai box, boxers tend to kick each other's legs. It's usually easier and it's effective because it wears down your opponents manouverability. Get kicked on the leg several times, and it becomes difficult to move. A strong enough kick can actually ruin your balance and you'll fall.
