Argued by whom?

I don't often see her referred to (especially by name) anywhere outside this website (and the Anti-Chapel forums back when those were a thing). In most discussions that I have seen, the top five tend to be the same all around, even if they shift in order.

Alucard, Richter, Simon, Trevor and for some reason LEON of all characters all get unreal amounts of press in favorites lists. And when Leon doesn't make it, Soma usually is in his place. I don't think I've ever seen Shanoa on more than a couple of those lists, and she's never very close to the top.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but I am saying that you seem to be pulling from a completely different pile than I am, so I am genuinely curious as to how you came to the conclusions you did.

It kinda goes default with having the 3rd most acclaimed metroidvania CV. But let's consider your list correct for a minute: All Belmonts + Morris fall into the Simon echo category. Outside  of them, the main CV options are more or less in order: Alucard, then Soma, then Shanoa and then Maria

It kinda goes default with having the 3rd most acclaimed metroidvania CV.

I... don't think it's the third most acclaimed castleroid.

Granted, MetaCritic is far from perfect but it's the closest thing to a objective broad spectrum test of this type of data.

By that rating, we have:

SOTN (duh) with a 93% favorable
Circle of the Moon with a 91% favorable (really wouldn't have called that one, but oh well)
Aria of Sorrow, also with a 91%

Even if we discard one of the two 91's, we're still left with Dawn of Sorrow in third place at an 89%. People liked this stuff.

Discounting rereleases, Order of Ecclesia is at 6th place on that list with an 85, tying with Portrait of Ruin (good critical reviews should be blamed for that one).

So let's get creative, and adjust Portrait's standing in favor of Ecclesia, because, honestly, we should. It's not bad (and anyone who says it is has forgotten what a truly bad game looks and plays like) but it's a long, long way from "beating Order of Ecclesia" level good. Even in that version of the list, Ecclesia BARELY cracks the top 5. Not bad at all, but still not enough to really say "third most acclaimed Metroidvania". Fortunately, we're discounting non-Metroidvanias from this list, and that means that, though it barely scrapes by, now that it's done so, it's secure.

If we allowed the classic games in though... that whole list changes.

I refer you again to my earlier comment:
Argued by whom?
...
I am saying that you seem to be pulling from a completely different pile than I am, so I am genuinely curious as to how you came to the conclusions you did.

We like OOE a lot on this forum (well, most of us do), and if this forum is your primary point of contact with the fandom, you'd come away with the impression that it's a pretty beloved game.

BUT!

A bunch of people actually disliked OoE because they thought it was too hard, or Shanoa's emotional character arc too subtle. Granted, this was in a pre-Dark Souls world, but that's the way that particular cookie crumbles.

Never forget that this forum is hardly indicative of the fandom at large. We're actually kind of strange outliers, for the most part. Find fans on Twitter or Google+, hell, even on Facebook, and opinions are wildly and chaotically more different than the stuff folks on this forum have an uncommon amount of agreement on.

So I don't see how "it kind goes default" because I can't find sufficient evidence to back up your claim that Ecclesia is "the 3rd most acclaimed metroidvania CV". Right now, I figure you're speaking/writing in fandom hyperbole and exaggerations. This doesn't make you bad (we all do it) but when you make that crazily specific and testable a claim, yeah, I'm gonna factcheck the hell out of it.

Addendum: OoE DOES crack the top three on more specialized gaming sites in just under half of the other sites I checked, but I went with Metacritic as it uses impartial listings that are much more free of bias because it only considers the raw numbers; most useful when one is trying to test against specific numbers.

How not to be a dark lord: the answer to that is a terribly interesting answer that involves an almost Jedi-like adherence to keeping oneself under control and finding ways to be true to yourself in a way that doesn't encourage the worst parts of you to become dangerously exaggerated and instead feeds your better nature. Also, protip: don't fuck with Alchemy or strike up any deals with ancient Japanese Shinigami gods no matter how tempting the deal or how suavely dressed the Shinigami is.

A quick look at the fan art and cosplay. of this series from just about any source shows a significant amount more love for Shanoa than Leon.  I wouldn't really call either of them top heroes in the series, but I certainly see a lot more love for Shanoa, from several sources.

Dracula was not always a monster. He was once a man named Mathias Cronqvist. A flawed, conflicted, genius of a man. How did the educated, aristocratic, crusader who piously served the church become a vampire, and eventually the Dark Lord himself, the opposing force to God? From a very young age terrors and tragedy shaped the man into the king of all evil. This is his story.

It makes sense that they got Simon AND Richter:
Simon was in CV1, CV2, and CV4 (and Wai Wai World 1 and 2 in Japan), and an unlockable in Harmony of Dissonance's BOSS RUSH, plus CV1 was re-released on the GBA.
Richter has DraculaX from the Wii's Virtual Console (Rondo), as well as the more recent Castlevania: DraculaXX (the SNES one), which was made recently downloadable on the eShop.  Plus, he was also in Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin and had a mode with Maria in that, and that was on the DS.

I think the other characters are being represented through the music.  I'm ECSTATIC that we got "Awake!" from Circle of the Moon is on there.

Heck you can even throw Alucard in that category since he appeared in CV3 for the NES and Dawn of Sorrow for the NDS so he has 2 Nintendo entries under his belt, (come to think of it he is also "technically" in Aria of Sorrow for the GBA in the form of Genya Arikado so thats a total of 3 Nintendo appearances).

One of my all-time music faves in CV! I hope it sounds as good or better then its GBA counterpart, cause I've heard some versions out there that have not lived up to great expectations.

There are not words to express my excitement about this!  If you care, here's a little story about when I found out:

So, I didn't get to see this announcement right away.  I'm not sure how long it was after the official Nintendo Direct...long enough that some news source was able to link to the video.  Anyway, work had started, and since it was the beginning of the school year things were particularly crazy and I wasn't paying attention to stuff like this.  The day I found out, we dismissed late, and I was trying to rush home because my church Pastor's wife was babysitting because my wife had to go to the doctor.  When I get home, she's reading a book to my son and agrees to finish it before heading home.  Just then, I hear a *ping* on my phone alerting me to a news article I might be interested in: "Nintendo Direct reveals Simon Belmont as playable...".  Remember, I hadn't been paying attention enough to even be aware that a Direct was coming up so I figure it can't be true, but I've also wanted and talked about how cool a Belmont would be since finding secret characters in the original Smash so I'm excited at the thought.  My initial reaction is to start excitedly shouting, "No way!  No way!  There's no way!  Konami's basically trashed everything good they had, there's no way they'd allow it!" as I open the article, but my pastor's wife is still there, and my daughter is asleep so...
...I get to the article, see the news and the link to the video and now it's even harder to not shout out, "Oh my gosh!  Oh my gosh!  It's real!  It's finally real, it's freaking real!"  Like an idiot, I click the link to watch the direct, only making worse the desire to jump and shout and run around my house despite the aforementioned reasons I couldn't behave that way.  By the time the video reached the hooded figure, I had to stop because I was about to explode.  To this day, nobody (except all of y'all now) knows the true story about what happened that afternoon.

Are you joking?

I mean I love me some Trevor, to be honest I'm a bigger fan of his than Simon's, but there is no disputing the fact that Simon is pretty much the quintessential Belmont and mostt well known hero amongst the CV fandom, he is the Belmont that first started it all and has appeared in more games than any other character in the series, really the only other character within the CV world that even comes close to his popularity and notoriety is Alucard.

maybe he's saying  it because of the Netflix show. Simon is THE Belmont but Trevor is the one getting more exposure rn

My faves are Ritcher, Juste and Julius so idc

It makes sense that they got Simon AND Richter:

Simon's the most popular Belmont with the most games, so that one's a given. Anyone expecting Trevor in his stead is a mite loopy.

Richter works as an echo fighter because he's the most set apart from Simon: bright blue instead of drab brown, faster movement and a ridiculous array of moves (in SOTN at least), pants[!], dark hair, etc. Now I don't know if any of Richter's crazy moves will be present in the new Smash to set him apart from Simon mechanically, but I hope so.

Trevor would have at least made a cool alternate color/costume for Simon, much like Cloud's two appearances in the last game. (They could fashion him after the Netflix series.) It's not like the core movesets would change any. Maybe that'll still be the case. I fully expect a color reminiscent of the Simon's Quest sprite, DON'T LET ME DOWN DEVELOPERS.
