Title: Something about a Castlevania game that you didn't realize at first
Post by: Vesperaevis on May 06, 2017, 02:44:03 PM
Was there something about a Castlevania game that you didn't notice on your first playthrough, only to find it out and realize it was staring you in the face the entire time? Excepting plot and foreshadowing stuff.

For me, it would be that it's been at least 5-6 years since my first playthrough of OoE, and I only just realized this week that the majority of the OoE rings are based off Tarot cards. (Ex. Chariot, Priestess, Lovers, Hanged Man...)
It's even weirder that I didn't make the connection because I've known about Tarot cards for a good number of years. I guess I just chalked it up to the names being chosen for dramatic value?

The very first time I played SOTN (I was about 16) I didn't notice the Relics were the same body parts from Simon's Quest.
I think on the second playthrough I caught it, however, I didn't notice that without them you can't enter the final boss room, which made me wonder if Alucard was gathering Dracula's body parts as Simon was.

The Simon's Quest thing with Simon not collecting "Dracula's Fang" which is actually what he attacks Simon with, I never knew this until a few years ago when someone in the CVD pointed it out to me.

Those Lord of the Rings references in SOTN. I only got the reference after watching the LOTR movies.

In SOTN I didn't noticed that Moon Rod was a Sailor Moon reference and didn't knew at the time that the Stone Mask was a...

The intro area of Super Castlevania IV. Only recently did I actually see what the giant skull in the rock formation was all about. It was shaped as a corps rising out of the ground. Probably mimicking Dracula's resurrection.

Lord of the Rings references?!

Someone in production was obviously just a little bit of a fan. ;)  I found it amusing just how many there were.

I'm gonna have to go play it again...I've played through at least 4-5 times and I'm not sure I've ever caught them!

The one that stuck out the most (for obvious reasons) was the Ring of Varda: Golden ring to rule over all. Get two of these and you are set for the rest of the game!

I just recently found out about OOE's boss track names being references to Castlevania games. Only the english tracks names though.

This might be slightly off from the original intention of this topic:  The hidden platforms in the 64 titles.  A friend and I played them a bunch, always jumping awkwardly (and dying usually) for certain items, and for others just wondering how you were supposed to get them or if they were some glitch or "decoration"...only to (years) later realize you could just walk to all of those things.

About Ascalon in AoS. At first, I just thought it was just a rather strong sword.

But...

Ah true, good spot. The real DS reads "Legendary Sword of the Dragon Slayers"
