I like the whip. However, I do agree with why the whip? I'm pretty sure in LoI, Rinaldo is like "Here are your choices of weapons!!! The axe of justice! The sword of God!!! AND... a whip...?"

Actually, Leon said that finding weapons in the Castle wouldn't be difficult, and Rinaldo forced the whip on him, insisting it would be the only weapon that would prove to be of use.
How not to be a dark lord: the answer to that is a terribly interesting answer that involves an almost Jedi-like adherence to keeping oneself under control and finding ways to be true to yourself in a way that doesn't encourage the worst parts of you to become dangerously exaggerated and instead feeds your better nature. Also, protip: don't fuck with Alchemy or strike up any deals with ancient Japanese Shinigami gods no matter how tempting the deal or how suavely dressed the Shinigami is.

because it was an alchemical whip. better question Rinaldo on why he figured a whip would be a better weapon to make alchemic than a sword, which as a Knight, Leon would be more experienced with.

Guess he figured the range would be more helpful. not to mention, like Uzo said, a whip is still a slashing weapon.

Oh, you're very right. I guess I was refering to the weapons you can see in the background in his cabin.

Rinaldo made the whip for his own use, to avenge his family, but couldn't do it because the whip was not perfect yet.
I suppose he used his knowlegde in alchemy to create a special weapon that could inflict more effective damage to vampires and other kind of creatures lurking in the castle, probably a whip because he doesn't look like the swordman type. Maybe he felt more comfortable with a long range weapon that allowed him to keep a certain distance from his enemies or just happened to have some training with that kind of weapons.

He says the whip suits Leon better, that's probably because Leon is a warrior and can use the whip better even if it's not his weapon of choice. The other weapons in his shop are probably normal, it can be that easy to create alchemic weapons and since he couldn't complete the whip why bother to make more weapons like that if he knows he can't acquire the missing ingredient, if Leon intended to defeat Walter he needed something better than a normal weapon and since he came empty handed Rinaldo gave him his old whip.

I don't know if this is accurate but I recall Rinaldo saying that all the other subweapons (axe, cross, etc.) were relics that previous warriors left behind in their attempt to defeat Walter & the castle. Is this true or am I remembering incorrectly?

What I remember is Rinaldo mentioning the magical relics. After casting a spell on Leon's gauntlet Rinaldo told him he can get some relics from the shop and the rest are in the castle. I don't think the sub weapons count as magical relics.
The relics Rinaldo mentioned are the ones that require the magical energy stored the gauntlet to work while the sub weapons use hearts so, even if the sub weapons are magical relics, they're not the ones Rinaldo is talking about.
I don't remember the sub weapons' origin being explained in LoI.

Not only this, but Leon's mystic Belmont blood also enhanced the whip's powers much further then Rinaldo or any other persons' ever could.

okay, its been 25 years, how come there hasn't been a disarming function for the VK? the Whip is one of the most badass weapons ever made yet it seems konami never utilized it to it's full potential

I always sort of interpreted it as Rinaldo wanting to get revenge upon Walter for murder using a weapon of punishment.

You could actually blast some skeletons' swords away in LoI, then they'd suicide-rush you.  But I agree.

That would be a sound explonation but he used it on his daughter too.

People forget Indiana Jones and Catwoman (in Batman Returns). And as I posted in I think the spritework thread, the guy that trained Michelle Pfeiffer how to use a bullwhip is an expert martial artist and said he would prefer a simple, high-quality bullwhip over most other weapons out there due to its range, versatility and deadliness.

The David Morgan Bullwhip is perhaps one of the best ones to use as a potential weapon. Then again an even more deadlier slashing whip would be the chainmail whip. Yes they do exist and are a little harder to use then a leather-made whip.

I have always wondered why a whip and not a sword.
Maybe they wanted to do something different.
