Title: OoE: First impressions
Post by: Crying Freeman on December 09, 2015, 01:15:42 PM
Picked it up used at GameStop, as I've skipped the DS titles. Thought I'd start with OoE cus its the only one retaining the gothis style, and I like the level based traveling rather than another gigantic castle once again (POR did a similar thing with the paintings as far as I know, but I hate the art in that game)

So far, I think it's a great game. I love the glyph system, and being able to equip both hands again is an awesome thing to finally bring back.

Graphics so far are nicely detailed. I'm not a DS connoisseur, so I can't really compare it to many other games, but I think it's a very nice looking game.

Digging the music. It's beautifully composed and fits, but hey, I should expect that in a CV game.

As I said above, I was looking forward to the new level based system, and I do love it! Makes playing the game a lot smoother.

I also wasn't expecting the challeneg to be too high, but I got my ass handed to me at the prison Skeleton boss until I used the hammer glyphs. I also love the grappling glyph thingy, makes fighting bosses more fun when you use the hook things to avoid them.

I consider OoE the last real CV game. Judgement was more of a spinoff, and a shitty one at that, and HOD was good but just another spinoff. Then LOS, yes, same franchise, but different universe and story, so to me this is like the last classic CV game. I'm not sure if Adventure Rebirth came out before or after, but even if it did come after, OoE is still the latest new story we get in this universe of CV, and with how shittily Konami acts now, I'm sad to say I think it will remain the last :'(

It's a beautiful game, and it's actually my favourite CV of all time :)

If you think the challenge is hard just wait... Gets better

'Magnus' is probably one of my favourite glyphs, it's incredibly creative without allowing the player to troll a superjump. Kind of reminds me of Bang Shishigami's nails in BlazBlue.

AR was released after, still a good game but not adding to the canon.

You and I are much alike in terms of our love for Castlevania (and 90's anime ;D) I've always said OOE is the last "true CV" which is fine with me, ending the series on a high.

I played pretty much all my free time today, and hot damn this is a fantastic game! I'm 1/3 done with the castle rn, and I really like the story too, plus Shanoa is probably my third favorite CV protagonist now (behind Simon and Sonia... Hm, 3 S names)

And always a fan of fan of similar interest, man  8)
I thought so, about AR being later. Speaking about release dates, can't believe this game came out in 2008... It's really been that long...
And about 90s anime, you may know Micheal Macconnahie, done a lot of dubbing work, played Ranaldo in LOI, and I think I heard his voice as Barlowe in here... I'll research it

The first time I played OOE on normal I played with English voices, the next time on the hardest setting I used Japanese (which I prefer) so not too sure about the name.

However, the Eng Dub voice actor for Ryu Soma/ Kaneshiro Takuto in ArgentoSoma also plays Richter Belmont in Castlevania COD, this I know for certain :)
His voice is great, same with Mark Hildreth who voiced Terry Bogard in the Fatal Fury anime movies, one of my favourites.

Haven't played a modern CV in Japanese, I just like the English VO charn a lot lol

And old school anime voice actors are missed today. I don't watch a lot of new stuff, but I hate new dubs that I have seen. Just no personality in it

EDIT- Just found out Macconnahie did voice Barlowe, tho uncredited

I actually like both for OOE, not being biased but they both sound solid to me. Albus especially. What I don't like is the one minor voice actor made sound like a surfy, they did the same thing to Urahara Kisuke in Bleach's ENG DUB!! Why? Just because they're blonde? haha

By the way although I think Bleach Eng dub is headless-horseshit compared to the Jap voices, Johnny Yong Bosch voices both Ichigo and Nero from DMC 4. Also that Captain with the long White hair in Eng is the same actor as Beerus from DBZ Battle of Gods/ Resurrection F, small world!! Which is also ironic as the Japanese voice of Kurotsuchi Mayuri is the same actor who voices Frieza in the Japanese dub of DBZ.... Damn full circle

Speaking of DBZ, it is one of the animes as well as Evangelion, possibly Cowboy Bebop, Raxephon, Fist of the North Star (the movie), Street Fighter II "V" and Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie, Mad Bull and a few others whose English dubs are superior imo.

EDIT- Just found out Macconnahie did voice Barlowe, tho uncredited

Sweet, love when that happens  8)

Not too fond of bleach, have seen Coboy Bebop with my bro (wasn't a fan personally, but the VA was pretty awesome) and the 80s FOTNS. And I love hearing Mike voicinf another CV game too :D

Oh really? I love Bleach, even the filler tickles me just right.

Bebop is so random, but the last few episodes and the ending are some of the best I've seen in an anime series.

I also recommend GunxSword (definitely Japanese voices, Eng subs)

Did you ever finish OOE Freeman?

I consider Adventure Rebirth the last true Castlevania since it was released shortly after OoE, but that was download only so it's only partial in my opinion. It's a shame because I felt OoE was the best step up since Aria of Sorrow. Everything about that game was great, even its difficulty. It really does kind of sadden me that OoE never got a proper sequel; it definitely deserved it.

I got to the castle, but I was hit by something that happens to me too often: I get far in a game and stop playing. I need to pick it up again cus I do wanna beat it. Been playing some PC games lately but will find some time for OOE. Still excellent so far though!

I hate the fact that there's no whip glyph. But everything else about it, especially the protagonist being a woman ('bout time too) is cool.

That would've been awesome! And out of all of the famale CV characters, Shanoa feels like the only one that was done right (Sonia had a fan-fic plot, Maria is OP, Carrie's attacks are shit and she's kinda bland, Charlet was great but not the main character)

For what it's worth I'm playing CVIII atm and although there wasn't as much of a plot back in the day, I'm liking the way Sypha was handled at that era of gaming.(despite the initial gender ambiguity) She can freeze enemies and water, in NES days, how boss is that!?

Also her lightning spell can seek out enemies in hard-to-reach places so you don't have to go to them and get killed. Also her ice spell is good for freezing those invincible orbs that hug the platforms and all you have to do is shatter them. Yeah Sypha was pretty boss in that game. Although the drawback for her was taking more damage then any other character. But I guess they had to balance her out in some way.

I like Yoko in AoS/ DoS; the role she plays in AoS and her playable self in DoS (she was my favourite of the 3)
I really wish Yoko was playable in AoS.
