Title: If anyone spots Forum Errors, please post here
Post by: Jorge D. Fuentes on December 11, 2009, 10:00:32 PM
If anyone has tried any features this new forum has, and has had an error occur, please post how you arrived at said error.
I'm looking more at the Forum Error Log (ha ha!  Admin stuff) and I spot some E-mail problems, or something to that effect, but it's difficult to tell exactly what's going on that causes the error.

So yeah, for the benefit of the Forum, if you spot a forum error somewhere (or some kind of feature that's not working correctly), please post it here.

Thanks in advance.  :D

I'm not sure if this is an error, but why does my avatar get reduced to a microscopic size even when I'm trying to use one from my own webspace?  Are the bigger avatars a mod-only thing or something?

just curious is all.

I've been trying to figure that out, myself.
Some people seem to get over the avatar size limit, but I'm not sure how they do it.  And it's not microscopic.  It's actually pretty reasonable.
It might be the file format, perhaps?  I must admit, I'm not sure how they're circumventing it, and whether it's even on purpose.

E-mail problems

Would this pertain to choosing to hide one's email address from the public but it being shown anyway? If not, then chock that one up to ye pyle ov problemes. :o

I think I have that disabled.  Let me go take a look at the options, maybe I can enable it and then it won't show.
You're talking about when you post a topic or a reply, at the bottom near your avatar there's an "E-mail" link with a letter icon.... and you want it disabled?

EDIT:
I took a look at the settings, and everyone is able to hide their E-mail from public under their Account Information on their profile.  They are able to hide it from everyone except for Administrators like myself and Kurt.... which is why I cannot check if it's working or not since I'm always logged in as Admin, and you can always see your own E-mail as well.

I suppose you could remove it from your Account Info, right?
Title: Re: If anyone spots Forum Errors, please post here
Post by: Abnormal Freak on July 20, 2010, 02:45:55 PM
I have the "hide from public" box checked. I wonder if I'm seeing my email address (both in the email icon in all of my posts and in my profile) since I'm logged in as me, but nobody else but admins can see it.

Guess I'd just have to hear from somebody else whether they see it or not, heh.
Title: Re: If anyone spots Forum Errors, please post here
Post by: Jorge D. Fuentes on July 20, 2010, 03:22:45 PM
Yeah I've got the forum settings such that users can choose to hide their E-mail from public.
I also checked your profile and you have it hidden.

We need a third party (just a regular user) to check if it's there.

UPDATE:
Ok I logged out and went to check, and the little buttons go away if I log out.
So if I'm a guest I definitely cannot see your E-mail.

I would imagine it works the same for regular users.

Guests seem a lot more limited, though. They can't view profiles at all without logging in, for example.

Yeah I've severely nerfed Guest Profiles.
It's an effort to give the least amount of power to spambots and other sillyness the Internet has put out there.

Has anyone had any issues as of late?
I've installed quite a few things behind the scenes, as people have noticed.  Is there an opinion on these?  Are they causing actual site problems for any of the forum-members?  Please let me know in this thread.

It's working for me.  {img}{/img} works (with the other brackets)
Let me edit the post and use the button.
EDIT:
The button on the reply works as well.  I guess the problem is on your end, regarding the image tag.

What's "Internet Info"?

Not exactly an error, but I noticed the board doesn't automatically recognize the new YouTube short links ("youtu.be" etc.). Is there a way to make posting one of those links work the same way as posting the longer links (i.e., making it into a video)?

Hey Jorge! I have a problem, bro.
For some reason, lately I'm getting an error message each time I'm trying to access the forum from my PC:

"Sorry, but the Adminstrator has blocked access by proxies."

So I can't access the forum. I'm typing this message from a different PC.
I don't know much about internet connections, so I don't know what's a proxy either.

All I can say is that I'm using a wireless connector to access the net, and perhaps by the same reason the forum system identified me as a spambot a couple of times.
Can you tell me of a way to fix that? Am I the only person getting that message?
Title: Re: If anyone spots Forum Errors, please post here
Post by: Jorge D. Fuentes on April 24, 2011, 05:57:20 AM
You're not the only one getting this, Freddy.

Lately we've had people logging in using Proxies.  A Proxy is a method used to connect to the internet anonymously.  That is, instead of using our own internet connection to access the 'net directly, you're accessing a proxy server, and it piggybacks your connection to the Internet, thus masking your true internet identity.

This forum has been having people logging in using Proxy Servers for a while.  While I did not care, we've had dubious accounts (spambots mostly) creating accounts and accessing the forum through proxies, which is why we had that big Chinese Spambot attack a few weeks back.

You're looking at the result of security measures installed.  I installed them.

My guess is that you're accessing the internet through one or more of these proxy servers instead of directly, when you connect from your home connection (or you have a Satellite-based Internet connection and its ISP has been identify as one that has allowed spambot accounts in the past).  That, or your computer's connection has been hijacked and you need to get your PC looked at.
Talk to whomever is charge of your internet connection, or tell me more details about it via PM (IP address, provider name, etc.).  It's likely that the provider or your PC has been accessing a proxy service and has been blacklisted.

EDIT:
I have it now so that you can temporarily still post and view the forum, but not register.  Already-created accounts should be able to post (I'm not too happy about that, but there do seem to be active members who are connecting this way).
I really suggest to the few people who are having this problem, to check your internet connection.  Are you using a hilariously old browser?  Are you piggybacking through a Proxy?  Maybe you're accessing stuff through a cellphone connection in a foreign country, or satellite internet may be the issue.  In any case, it's in your best interests to find that info out for yourself.

Can we please get rid of the piece of dooky drop-down list of newly-added posts? o. o Each time I visit this place, which is several times a day sometimes, I get a million notifications that drop down and get in the way of everything. I go to the main page to see what the most recently posted in topic of any subforum is, and I gotta wait a few seconds just to see that 'cos the millions of notifications get in the way. I can't even read what any of 'em say anyway.
Title: Re: If anyone spots Forum Errors, please post here
Post by: Jorge D. Fuentes on May 16, 2011, 06:32:27 PM
Yeah I'm thinking of getting rid of the eNotify.  Should be gone in a few days or so.
There isn't much use 'cuz the links come up too quickly and there isn't a 'notifications page' anyway (which I submitted as a suggestion).

I'll also see what can be done about those new Youtube links.

Probably also the source of the page taking 15 times normal load times to load. I tend to get that 'this script is raping your browser, want to stop running it now?' message a lot on the main page.
Title: Re: If anyone spots Forum Errors, please post here
Post by: Jorge D. Fuentes on May 16, 2011, 07:54:11 PM
On the main page?
I don't get that problem.

I implemented an Ajax script so that your QuickReply shows up without having to refresh the page.  The downside is that it shows a green bar on top saying
"Loading..."

Not sure if I dig that all that much.  I gotta see if I can change it to a more forum-friendly color.

Your pictures are pretty big, but let me see if I understand the problem:
-you put up some pictures
-you went back to the original post and modified it, trying to add more pictures
-the new pix didn't show?

or did you:
-put up pictures
-went back to the post and replied to add more
-your reply for some reason didn't have them, so you went to modify it
-modifying it gave you a new post?

If you did this then maybe your pics were large and were taking a while to load.  On top of that, you may have hit the 'reply' instead of 'modify' button...?
Title: Re: If anyone spots Forum Errors, please post here
Post by: Dark Nemesis on May 17, 2011, 02:45:37 PM
I went back to the original post and i tried to put the same pictures again and when i pressed the save button, it has made a copy of the original post. This is the first time that i have encounter this problem, as for the pictures, sure they might be a little big, but when i made the first try, when i pressed the post button, i was waiting about 5 minutes and all it was saying on the windows tab, was connecting. I haven't touch the second post, but you can see that it says that it has been modified. I've been left with my mouth open when i saw, what happen when i tried to modify it.

I don't know if i was any help to underestand what happen.

Maybe you accidentally hit the new 'save as draft' button?
Were you using Quick Reply or were you using the regular reply button?

I used the regular reply button. I haven't noticed that there is a save as draft button. I also checked my status and i don't have any drafts. Maybe fire fox had a internal crash and create that bug? I really don't know what  else to say....

Probably the javascript code.  I will change the spoiler code so that you have to 'click' into it for it to show (right now you have to hover over it to show, something that could be problematic on cellphones).

I can't log into my old account. I went to change my username, and when I was done, the forum software automatically logged me out and gave me a message that said I changed my e-mail address and that to log in, I need to click on a verification link in an e-mail that was sent to me. Thing was, I didn't change my e-mail, just my username. I have no idea where the verification e-mail was sent, and I may not have access to the e-mail address it was sent to.

If this can't be taken care of, that's okay, I guess. This account is fine, I suppose.

Wow.

Ok... well, you shouldn't be using other accounts anyway, but what was this account?  The 'Blue Successor' one?  I thought you had just changed the existing one.  I did not realize you had made a completely new one...
I can migrate your post count and stuff before I destroy it, or destroy your red one and change your account name/password so you can log back in, then you can change your password...

I reactivated your "Successor the Read" account.
Reply here once you have it, so I can wipe your "Red Successor" one.

I had a mod that would have the 'full reply' options in Quick Reply.  Perhaps this is what's causing the issue.
It's temporarily uninstalled.  Can you see the quick reply box now?  Also, remember that you can open/close the quick reply box by clicking on the Plus/Minus sign above and to the left of it.

Title: Re: If anyone spots Forum Errors, please post here
Post by: Jorge D. Fuentes on July 24, 2011, 04:46:07 PM
You have to add a comma next to a tag if you're using multiple tags.
So you'd have to add stuff like:
tags, tagging, pemburu, vampir, tagorific, tagiciousness

If you put:
tags tagging pemburu vampir

it will NOT WORK.

I will also look into maybe your permissions but you seem to be a regular member and thus have the same permissions as everyone else.  So if you cannot tag, maybe others cannot either?  We'd have to see.

Could be the layout on mobile/table devices, which this forum is not optimized for (there's no 'mobile' version of it).

This isn't a forum error (I don't think) but I tried sending someone a PM and got a notification that they'd blocked my PM (immediate message upon sending). I was just wondering how blocking people's PMs works; is it a "block all PMs" kind of thing, or do you block individuals from doing so? If the latter, I's sad. :<
Title: Re: If anyone spots Forum Errors, please post here
Post by: Pfil on April 25, 2013, 06:00:04 PM
I think you have to allow all PMs or block all PMs, you can't block a person (from what I know, but maybe I'm wrong).
I wouldn't block anyone, by the way, just as I wouldn't ignore anyone. Everyone's been so cool so far! I even added many ones to my friends list.
I just always have the PM feature disallowed in my online profiles, because I'm a little paranoid, and I like to talk things in the main forum where everyone can see them. But it's nothing personal with anyone, I really like it here, it's so far the best forum community I've seen on the web.

Not sure what's going on with YouTube links. I take out the S from https, which used to embed the video in a post, but now it's giving me this "device support" error:

It seems AEVA Media, the SMF plugin that I installed that allows auto-embedding to happen on the Forum, is no longer supported by the new version of Youtube that's being rolled out.
So new videos from Youtube (and possibly all videos once it's fully placed) may no longer be able to be embedded on the forum.

There is more information on the Youtube Support Page (https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/6098135?hl=en).  Specifically, the words " If the video appears unexpectedly in a web browser, it means that website is using an outdated method to access YouTube videos".

This could be a problem, as we may have to revert back to posting just the link to Youtube.

However, there may be a better solution, but in order to find it, I need your help, guys.

We need to scour the Simple Machines Forums Customization & Mods Page (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/) for a new plugin that allows us to auto-embed Media.
Our current plugin, AEVA Media, is outdated and no longer supported by the authors, since they've moved on to another program that costs money and I don't think it's compatible with SMF.

Find that plugin, and check if it's updated.  Then get back to me about it and I will install it to the board, and remove the old AEVA Media plugin.

If we cannot find such a plugin, we'll have to revert back to just posting the links to Youtube instead.

Testing the new Youtube embed tag (youtube)(/youtube) only with square brackets:

UPDATE: So this mod I added works, but you HAVE to use the URL that Youtube gives you in the "Share" options.  It's usually shortened to something like youtu.be/bunchofnumbersandletters
If you use the URL from the browser, our forum turns it into a link and it won't load/display properly.

Yeah, that happens to me all the time. I've just stopped relying on my email to remind me about PMs and just check the top of my page every day.

It is one of those that I suggested? I'm glad that it works, but if some of these could act like before it would be easier for newbies and easier to everyone. Even so thanks for finding a fix, now we can continue watching videos on the dungeon ;D

Not sure why I'm still having YouTube embed problems. Could be that I'm editing a previous post or this video is somehow fudged.

Anyway, I'm just using the bracketed (youtube)(/youtube) tags with the full URL in between. Using the straight link gives me the video player graphics but no video:

and taking out the S in https doesn't show anything at all:

BOTH, however, work when I click Preview Post, but not when I actually make the post.

Wonder what happens if I try a different video.

Edit: Same thing, and when I edit this post, it shows (url)(/url) tags around the link between the YouTube tags which I didn't put there.

From what I tried, it seems you can't put any text before the video.

Ab, you know that we can't use direct links anymore right? We need to use these that youtube give to us when we use its share function, yeah, this sucks but is better than nothing.

Oh, dumb. That's the exact opposite of every other forum with a YouTube tag. :p If you use the shortened URL, nothing comes up. Guess I misread Jorge's post 'cos I'm always so used to using the full URL.

Anyway...

YouTube embedding seems to be completely borked again. I'm using the shortened URL retrieved under the Share feature and I keep getting told it's an invalid link.

I'll just bombard a bunch of videos and see if any of them work.

Well FFS, they work! Does the YouTube tag not work in certain subforums on this board? Every time lately I've made a post trying to embed a YouTube video, things get completely fucked up, as in here (http://castlevaniadungeon.net/forums/index.php/topic,8072.msg180556.html#msg180556). It gives me this message:

[ Invalid YouTube link ]

and changes the YouTube URL to this:

(youtube)(url=https://youtu.be/D8FH8NI4U4Y)https://youtu.be/D8FH8NI4U4Y(/url)(/youtube)

I don't get why it's changing it to a clickable URL instead of an embedded video.

THOUGH I HAVE A THEORY!

Every time I click Preview Post just to make sure I used the correct URL (I keep forgetting if it's the short one from the Share function or what you get from your browser), and even if it's the proper link with embed tags, clicking Post someone mucks it all up.

GOING TO TEST THAT THEORY NOW!

Edit: That's not it either. My only answer: The YouTube embed tag is a finicky sonovabirchtree.

I know! I really wish we could've kept AEVA Media.
But now it's a paid plugin so fuck that noise.

The embed tag is funky.

I hear that users have been having issues with the Forum kicking up errors.

Please post those errors here, whenever you are finally able to post.

Sometimes the forum takes too long to load and I just call it quits for that day.

Yes, lately that's been a server/host issue as well.
Please note that we ARE working on it.

It looks like one of our anti-spambot plugins may be outdated and is messing things up while looking for IPs.

I got ahold of the guy who developed the plugin that may be causing the database issues.
Hopefully he gets back to me.

Cool.

I'd also like to note that someone from deviantart was interested in reading the Ricordanza novel but since the forum is "dead" to them, they just requested that I post the translation on my DA account, which I did.

Today when I enter the forum I get ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED, but now after 10 minutes approx I let myself in, here I am  ;D

Hoping this is the right place for this. In the "Fan-games' Sub Thread" in Fan Stuff, all the links to CV dungeon threads give 404 errors.

Ugh, that's a weird one.
I hope it's just the links that are bad, and not that the posts are gone.
(I have not done any board thread purges ever so that should not be the case).

Thanks! I will look into it.  In the mean time, attempt using the Search Feature for those games and hopefully you can find the original thread.
We may just have to fix that one initial post.
