Title: horribleness
Post by: Ed Oscuro on September 11, 2007, 06:10:03 PM
Why do I have to click past an ad or something at the top of the screen after every third post or so? >:(

At the very least, it's less annoying than the stupid flash ads you were forced to look at on the other forum, coupled with random "announcements".

I can deal with the ads every 3 posts more than a constant one that looks ugly and never leaves me alone.

I find it annoying that even if I'm going to check something in my profile it throws an advertisement at me. Dirty pool, old chap. :-[

It's still like a disease that won't go away. Time for radiation.

Actually I tested something out and I think it could work.
Once again, Firefox + Adblock to the rescue.

You'll need Firefox and its wonderful Adblock plugin.

Open up the Adblock blacklist and add:

http://wrapper.gamespy.com

Then save/close.
I've been purposefully clicking around the forum, and I stopped getting the "Continue to..." page.

It could be a fluke but I've at least clicked 25 times in different topics/threads.  You guys can help me with this test if you've got Firefox & Adblock.

Let me know your findings, gang.

Nice work. At least this will be a good option for people until we can figure out a way to permanently remove the advertisement page. Of course, that's provided it can be removed. Hopefully that's not just a pipe dream. ;)

I don't think it can be removed completely.  It's one of those things where your host tells you "You can have free space but you MUST have ads here, here and here, otherwise you don't get what I'm offering" or something.

Every site that's part of the classicgaming/gamespy network needs to have that in at least three pages, from what I googled.

Even the Dungeon has it, only it was cleverly well done in that it's in only some spots.

That's some good and strong radiation Jorge! I went through the whole form and through the hand full of topics... without a random ad encounter.

It's refreshing. : )

Sure, strategic locations for the advertisements are all well and good. But why must this be EVERY third click of a link? >:(

I think that's a bit of an overkill. Don't you agree? ;)

Some people are never happy. Yeah, it's a pain, but think of what would've happened if the people as Forum Plant and Kurt didn't work together to help us out in the first place. It could've easily gone down that way.

(installs adblock plugin)

PS: I like how this forum can spell check.

Whoop de doo.

I don't like Forums that stuff ads down people's throats, and that needs to get fixed.

Also, quotes are broken, looks like: you can't tell where a quote ends and the reply begins.

In reply to Ed:

Then maybe you should make a list of all your gripes and send it to Chris? Would you rather stay at the old board or what?

Also Jorge, the adblock links works fine. Thanks.

EDIT: I decided just to start a list, much like the "Stuff that needs fixin" thread of old. CLICK HERE TO ADD TO IT (http://castlevania.classicgaming.gamespy.com/forums/index.php?topic=9.0)

Those smileys are awful. Classic smileys plz.

No ads here, at least yet. There's something that stretches the layout horribly at some places.

This is way too long. Linebreaks plz.

Edit: Also please, let us have more letters in the custom titles. They don't fit with so few letters allowed. :o

Regarding the ad situation:

Unfortunately we have no choice but to require sites to run these two types of ads. We provide unlimited web space, databases, and bandwidth to all of our hosted sites, and the ad revenue we collect is the sole source of funding for this service. We are talking with the ad department to find a less intrusive way of placing ad units on forums for non-subscribers, but for now they need to stay. :(

Regarding the ad situation:
Eh, I could have phrased that in a more even manner. I didn't realize more was going to be done with this installation, so if these things could be fixed, that'd be great!

Firefox + Adblock = No More Tears

Indeed, such a simple solution. Do this if you can everyone! :o

(lolz @ RPG random ad battles, seeing how game companies are throwing ads in their games, that might just be the next thing...) : P

P.S. "Warning - while you were typing a new reply has been posted. You may wish to review your post." Sweet, I like this new Waring Warning stuff. It makes me want to play through some of the X games now. haha
