The roman catholic church tried to eliminate Pegan rituals, but were ultametly unsuccessful. So instead they incorporated those traditions with some small changes here and there and whalla! we have our modern holidays. It's the old saying: If you can't beat 'em, assimilate them.
Ah, this is very similar to what the Soviet Union did.
When the Soviet Union was founded, they based the government on the atheistic ideals of Marxism, and since religion had no place in the Soviet Union, all religious holidays were announced unofficial, and replaced with secular Socialist holidays such as May 1st (International Labor Day), May 9th (Victory {over Nazi Germany} day) and March 8th (International women's day).
However, they failed to prevent the people from celebrating Christmas, so instead of forbidding the holiday, they have turned Christmas celebrations into the much-more-secular
New year celebrations.
The New Year's celebrations in Russia were made to appear as if it has nothing to do with Christ or Christianity.
Nevertheless, the Christmas tree remained, with a red star of the Soviet Union replacing the angel.
And Santa Claus as well, referred to as Ded Moroz (Grandfather Cold), replacing the character of st. Nicholas with a character from Russian folklore. In Russia, Ded Moroz also often appears with his (usually slutty) young granddaughter,
