It's 20 goddamn 17 and yet I and my fellow Alaskans still catch this EVERY YEAR:

"Where are the igloos? I was expecting igloos!"
"It's just like a real state!"
"Where's the best place to see Russia from?"
"OOH! SAY SOMETHING ALASKAN!"

And other irksome stupid fucking goddamn "I know nothing of the past century" questions that my state seems to attract from otherwise educated and rational thinking visitors. You'd think we never stopped being part of Russia from all the dumb tourists who act as though we're an entirely different country. Though in their defense, the United States Government also does that exact same fucking thing every year.

...yeah. I'm kind of salty about these things.
How not to be a dark lord: the answer to that is a terribly interesting answer that involves an almost Jedi-like adherence to keeping oneself under control and finding ways to be true to yourself in a way that doesn't encourage the worst parts of you to become dangerously exaggerated and instead feeds your better nature. Also, protip: don't fuck with Alchemy or strike up any deals with ancient Japanese Shinigami gods no matter how tempting the deal or how suavely dressed the Shinigami is.

As someone who IS trained in psychology & a sufferer of severe social anxiety (officially diagnosed) I say this with respect, Highwind - it seems that you are letting it get the better of you & causing yourself undue duress. It's a hard battle, I know - I was shaking after a slight altercation with a woman in a parking lot last week, reviewing the conversation over & over in my head, asking myself if I'd responded with the proper degree of defense/aggression. Intellectually, I knew I did - I took no guff, proved her wrong & we parted ways peacefully. Yet, I found myself wanting to FIND her in that parking lot after my shopping was done & just lay into her - I was cycling through the anger, anxiety & self-doubt for the rest of the day. It happens & it's rough. I promise, I get that & I am sorry that you suffer with this too.

That being said, I feel that a tap on the shoulder to garner your attention in a lively public place isn't really grounds to assume people are irresponsible, disrespectful jerks with no common sense or decency. Sure, it would be better if they were to call out to you with a simple, "Excuse me", but maybe they had already tried that & you didn't hear them? I've had that happen & they better explain themselves AFTER the shoulder tap - "I called out to you, but you didn't seem to hear me, so I'm sorry to bother you like this, but do you know/can you tell me...". Not I or anyone here can say for certainty since we weren't there, but based on how the situation was explained, I see this as a possibility.

Also, look at it this way - maybe they have social anxiety themselves & they were getting that tunnel vision I know I'm prone to & other people with our affliction have confided in me they get when they engage another person in public? By tunnel vision, I mean we're freaking out SO BAD by having to ask someone for something, a stranger no less, so we're channeling everything we have into keeping it together, focusing on that one person we've picked to approach. I've done that plenty when having to seek assistance from someone in public. And hey, I do the shoulder tap too, gentley with my index finger while saying, "Excuse me" again. I do this understanding that not everyone likes being touched - I am very awkward when it happens to me, even just brushing up against someone by accident - so it is a gamble, but I reserve it for after the verbal engagement has failed.

As far as it being against the law - there are MANY laws that are ludicrous, at least without context. In this context, it seemed an innocent approach by someone just looking for minor assistance, no harm intended, so try not to take any.

We get this over here in the Yukon as well. I got a good chuckle when I first heard it, back when I was still in High school. And yes, the igloo question is really, really old. It lacks any form of thinking and common sense most humans come equipped with. Especially when said igloo resident has electricity, heat, TV, a PC, plumbing, and is using the internet with a top of the line Wi-Fi connection. In the middle of nowhere! lol. But personally I can't blame the people for thinking in this way. It's the fault of the educational system the lower 48 is using. They learn almost nothing about the rest of the world unless they're in collage or university. It's a travesty really.

Let's not forget the tourists that think that Hawaii isn't apart of the United States:

Not legally anyways. Sad fact that it was annexed from them through threat and murder. The ruling monarch of Hawaii was placed under house arrest and her council members were hung until she gave in to America's demands to make the island nation part of the US. While I was there the tour announcer on one of the busses mentioned that until Hawaii is given back to its people their flag continues to fly half-mast. I had heard that former President Bill Clinton did in fact apologise to the Hawaiian people about that incident, however the islands are still under US control.

I'm okay with the questions, as long as the other person respects my personal space. Believe it or not, the law actually says that simply touching someone without consent is battery.

I thought technically "touching" was deemed as assault? Is that the same thing as 'battery'? (Sounds like assault + aggression, but I'm not a lawyer)

I think people ask you because you look friendly. I've been asked a lot of times everywhere I go, even when I'm also a tourist there. At least I wasn't asked stupid questions.

In the past when I've been in semi-formal clothes inside a business or some kind of civic/ public venue, if someone asks me for something, thinking that I work there e.g. asking for directions, I simply play along with it, direct them and they go on their way. Even if they ask me if I work there, I don't respond with yes or no, I just ask them how I can assist. ;P

However I do understand some of us don't appreciate being approached in public and I would think there are certain instances where it's not appropriate/ where common decency forbids it:
- Down a poorly lit alley or carpark etc regardless of time of day
- In the Mens Room/ Ladies
- Before/ During/ After a visit to the atm
- While you're clearly deeply engaged in a conversation of sorts with a potential love interest/ on a date

Unless you plan on being a hermit, be prepared to have to deal with people (and even on on the Internet, people exist).

I used to think women only existed in the interwebz.... lel  :P

No, dad, we wanna watch the man emasculating a dunkey over there.

Also, I think Highwind's problem was less the questioning and more the physical contact.

I'm peeved occasionally by random questions (especially dumb ones) but I generally play along and help out, but if a random person spun me around by the shoulder or something TO ask that question? Yeah, I can understand being pissed about that.

Well, yeah, if they grabbed you by both shoulders & shook you like a redheaded step-child to get your attention, which is how this kinda sounds.

I believe legally that assault is intent, and battery is contact/injury.

Ya know, I always considered my part to be of the "deep south". I'm southeastern though, an hour & a half from Tennessee & West Virginia, 1 hour from Virginia, so I am closer to what many consider to be such. Kentucky is sort of a border state though & as you can tell, I'm in a borderland part. From a Jungian perspective, it could be viewed as causing a bit of confusion about my "homeplace", but it is also what helped me to be the little traveler that I was as a child & am now forcing myself to be as a burgeoning shut-in adult.

It was one of my days off of work.  It's not that hard to find a cast member and ask.  And as I am (obviously) not a cast member (or a tour guide, for that matter), I am not personally obligated to help someone with a non-urgent need.  (Like finding where they sell empanadas)  Am I being a little bit selfish in wanting to have fun without being bothered by complete strangers?  Maybe I am.  Is it selfish to not want complete strangers to crowd, poke/touch, and badger and me about what I'm currently eating.  Absolutely yes.  I am a human being, who is legally entitled to my own personal space.  Is it too much to ask of people to please respect my personal space?  What would you have done if someone came up to you and touched you to ask a question?
