I'm available to judge again.

Basically copied from where I said it in the other thread...I think an end boss is not the type of thing I should start with, but if you still need a judge, and if it doesn't matter that I haven't designed my own sprites before, I'd be glad to judge this one.  I think I could be a fair judge...I love the "pixelated" style and I'm a quick learner if there are certain "specifics" or "details" I should know...but if those of you with more experience at spriting think it would be a bad idea, I don't really have grounds to argue I think.  But again, I'd be glad to do it, as well as look up anything those with experience feel I need to know to do the job.

EDIT: Shiroi, I just saw your comment here (http://castlevaniadungeon.net/forums/index.php/topic,7519.165.html)...if, by this, you mean I shouldn't judge either (because I'm not experienced) that's fine.  I don't mean to be nit-picky, but just say that directly so I know I'm not just reading something into your comment.  I won't be offended, I promise!  Otherwise, I'd still be glad/willing to be a judge.

I'll be adding both of your names on the list.
@theAndroid: judges dont need the experience. My comment pertains to people who would create the sprites.

Nice to have you aboard Android!

Give yourself some credit bro, technically anyone with any drop of artistic talent could judge a contest.

It's all subjective man!

Not bad Jop, Remember what I mentioned about dynamic posing in your entry in the last contest?

Look at how mythical creatures like Satyr or even Pan from LOS. Look at how they stand. Your sprite could benefit from that type of stance. It gives a sense of weight and it won't be just standing dead-on.

Also, I would add a character sprite for scale in relation to your creature.

This is Dracula final form in the 1999 battle, if the game were made by me: Dracula's Spirit. The TRUE boss here, though, is the Crimson Stone. The sprite is cut like that because this form is an entire level. But I kept the main sprite itself separate.

But yeah. Fantastic work aside, we've still got a good two weeks left. Plenty can happen in that timeframe, especially when you've got such skilled folks as Donoffrio (and VDK, but I dunno if he's on here or just CVBla) hanging around.

In any case, if anyone's gonna top that they'd need those two weeks.

Surely if I was a judge, you would receive my vote. Man I can totally see your inspiration coming from Chaos statues from AoS and Dracula pain, also this eye in his brain seems to me like as if his mind have some kind of parasite, while Dracula itself is suffering, magnificent indeed.

I've already thought about using that "mental dimension" in a project, but you top it and even improves in many ways the idea, Im really touched by it. Maybe it will even be my new wallpaper for some time.

Also you at the same time did a new enemy (Bloodman? Like a Mudman of blood?) a new Julius design and a new boss, wow.
I really want to see what more will come from these contests.

No offense to plot, but there are two weeks left, and I think someone with a good imagination and/or a decent knowledge of CV (and some spriting ability too!) could come up with something awesome!  I'm eager to see what else is submitted!

Hopefully I can finish this monstrosity in time (the body's roughly 750 pixels wide all together). If I can't...I'll find a way to enter something decently composed. But entering the head just to sort of put myself in the running.

But this is simply spectacular!

I still think you've got me beat. I just went with the easy Dracul=Dragon route, whereas you've created a masterpiece worthy of the series canon.

I'll try to finish this nightmare. My work schedule's pretty lax the next week, so if I don't get called in on an offday and nothing life-changing comes up I should be fine.

...man, it's still hard to believe only a few years ago I was churning out shitty Simon edits, and now I've got this magnificent t-rex dragon bastard.

Unlikely, given that Vlad II coined the name, and his son took it, six hundred years before I made this image.

If me posting these each update is an issue at all, let me know. Given the scale of this thing, I'm doing this in case I don't actually finish it (in which case the "most finished" version would be enterable).

Is it because of the perspective hiding the palm of his hand?

@Drac9: Its my feedback, as I said before Im liking this Dracula's dragon form sprites and its obviously not easy to do, its really pretty to see, but his hand seems strange to me...

Is it because of the perspective hiding the palm of his hand?

... Maybe because of that, or because I cant see the back of his hand, I cant define the correct perspective only be looking at it.

If you animate something of this magnitude, do a proper sprite-sheet with all necessary animations to send it to Serio's CV Fighter :P   j/k

I think as an added incentive for this month, the winner should have an opportunity to animate their winning entry.

Implying that they're not allowed to animate it otherwise? I don't understand. This doesn't sound like a reward at all.

Nan, it just seems that it's so far in the contest that no one is going to have the time nor energy to animated their sprite and when the contest is done that is it...

The nearness of the deadline isn't going to make me any less burnt out on this once he's finished. He's taking enough energy as it is, to say nothing of the other entrants. The option to animate our entries isn't an incentive, nor should it be. You're trying to add an unnecessary restriction that doesn't even need to exist in the first place. If we want to animate our entries, we will. If not, we'll put on some coffee and watch The Price Is Right.

Title: Re: November 2014 Castlevania Dungeon Sprite Contest

I don't think that's necessary, honestly. Five days is still plenty of time, and at the rate I'm going, I'll easily finish mine on time. And if my colossus of an entry can be finished in five days, I'm sure ZSG and any others will have no trouble finishing in that time.

HA! X-D

I'm not making a sprite, but I wouldn't be opposed to the deadline being extended.  At least with the December contest, since we're doing foods (theoretically smaller and more simple), I wouldn't expect it to matter if the judges of the Nov. contest lose a day or three from their design time.

Just tell me until when you guys want the deadline extension.

Post by: theANdROId on November 23, 2014, 09:50:08 PM
Well...I'm not someone who is making something for this one...but the first thought that comes to mind is extending the entry deadline to Nov. 30th or Dec. 1st, giving participants 3 or 4 more days.  Obviously, whoever is still working could give a better idea (Drac9, Zero [I think], ...anyone else?), though I guess we still gotta be somewhat limited in the spirit of competition or something!
Title: Re: November 2014 Castlevania Dungeon Sprite Contest
Post by: Dracula9 on November 23, 2014, 10:11:07 PM
Well, as I mentioned, I'll likely finish mine on time, as I (thankfully) have the next four days off. But I don't know what ZSG's entry is or how long it has taken/will take for him to finish, to say nothing of any other potential entries.

I've been cooking something up, started on Friday. It's not as grand as previous submissions so it shouldn't take too much time.
Having the extra weekend might come in handy though but I'll keep you posted as to whether I'll need it or not.

Don't worry about me, uzo, I'll get mine done (though the sentiment is appreciated). It's the others I'm more concerned for. I didn't even know Donvermicelli had an entry, so there may very well be contestants with entries you are just waiting to finish before posting.

If we do extend it, it should be no longer than a week at the most.

One of the prerequisites of the contest is the deadline, I believe extending it hurts the iniquity of the contest.

The deadline forces the participants to become quicker spriter's and gain valuable experience (if they haven't had it before) working under pressure and a time frame.

I think it's not only great to have fun participating in these contest but I also think it's more valuable for artists to improve upon their actual skills be it, design, speed, whatever etc..I have already noticed novice artist since the last contest make great gains when it comes to the quality of their work.

Being able to sprite quickly under given guidelines is very important and shouldn't be taken lightly.

With that mentioned others may disagree with me and that is fine. If, you guys want an extension and vote for it, then I guess majority will win.

I am just pointing this out, just my opinion by no means is it gospel.

Post by: Dracula9 on November 24, 2014, 09:49:17 AM
A good point, darkman.

Honestly, I'm fine either way. My consideration of the extension lies more in concern for other entrants.

Ultimately, I'll stick with whatever's decided.
Title: Re: November 2014 Castlevania Dungeon Sprite Contest
Post by: uzo on November 24, 2014, 10:10:23 AM
I wasn't going to say anything until we got within a day or so of the deadline, since I was pretty confident you'd be able to manage it. Though since we were discussing it already...

Under any other circumstance I wouldn't agree, but this was such a monumental theme and so few entered that I think it it warrants it this time.
Title: Re: November 2014 Castlevania Dungeon Sprite Contest
Post by: theANdROId on November 24, 2014, 04:29:23 PM
I'd second all that was said.  Every contest can't just be cavalier about deadlines every time, but an occasional grant shouldn't hurt too much.  Again, I may not be a participant, but I'd be fine either way.

I'd spoil-tag the OP postings of the sprites, Shiroi. Mine and plot's alone will make the post massive.

EDIT: I stand corrected, Lelygax. I went through the SPCs again. The song you posted is listed as "Carriage Driver." So either the uploader of that video got it wrong or the ripper of these SPCs got it wrong.

Either way, I got one up and working, so it doesn't really matter.

Well here is my entry, I guess this is all I could do given the time. Big sprites like these aren't really my forte but as a plus I learned a lot from making it.

The idea behind it was that even though Dracula in the canon is known to be able to shape shift into numerous creatures other than bats he is rarely seen doing so.
Also the absorption of Cornell's wolf powers gave me the idea to make the main part of his body wolf-like.
Instead of fighting the usual 'caster' Dracula this would be a high speed battle between Dracula and the player.

Well, the tail was never really a requirement, I just thought it would help the believability of the fight.

Not that it matters. I'm at work now, so while I could (and probably will) touch up minor shading details here and there, I likely won't have the time to make something as large as the tail with what time is left.

Thank you, Dracula9. The boots are my favorite part. Now i feel i'll never be the same. Spriting things like this is bad for mental health X_x. I just want to take a rest right now...

That dragon took a lot out of me, and he took roughly two-thirds the time that took you, so I can only imagine how drained you must be.

Truthfully, I've always been rather jealous of people who can sprite things of this caliber in that rough "scribble" style. Obviously you didn't just scribble, but that rough, almost painting-like style has perpetually eluded me, so it's always a treat to see it in its prime. Once more I say well done.

(hint hint Alvarez this is what Satan should've looked like in LoS2)

The scribble thing is not what i had in mind. I wanted to use some sort of dithering, but it turned out i couldn't finish in time, so i started to scribble like crazy  ;D. My first idea for the contest was simpler, but you guys put a lot of effort into spriting. This contest is insane.

Time's up!
Thank you for participating in this contest.
The thread for December's contest will open up soon.

I have updated the first post with all the final sprite of each contestant.

Judges.
It is now time for you guys to deliberate and decide on the winner.
Remember to post here on December 1 with your final verdict and individual comments on each entry.

Congrats to every participant in this month's sprite contest!

This contest was a beast!

Now comes the hard part for us judges to sift through all these beautiful entries!

You guys should really dig the next couple of sprite contests.

Take a break guys you really deserve it!

On a side note, can we add another sub-thread to view the entries for each contest or just the winners to the contest boards?

That way people can check out the caliber of entries or winners for each month. This month and last's month's entries are too good to just not be publically available for viewing without going through all the threads...

EDIT: I'm on it!

Don't worry, in a future contest, I am toying with the idea of doing a TEAM contest with team's of 2 of your choice working on one entry together.

That way different people with varying skill levels can network and learn from one another.

Most likely it will be to sprite a full environment. I.E. a Boss Stage Revamp

What do you guys think of that?

True that, but also be aware everyone has a life also.

For all we know he may be having a family emergency...

It's only day #3 also Shiroi also mentioned something about a week or 2 at the most for him being late.

On a side note, the next contest is up now.

It should be a much lighter and easier tone than the previous months.

Post by: Dracula9 on December 03, 2014, 04:32:46 PM
Oh, I know. Life gets priority, of course.

But you guys set a specific results day and it's three days past that. Late is late. The holiday weekend justifies it, surely, but trying to talk it down as anything but lateness is a bit annoying. I'm a contest judge over on SI and the only late posting I've made so far was declaring a contest open fifteen minutes after the designated time (quarter-after midnight instead of one minute after). Maybe it's just me taking the role too seriously (which is likely), but I think that a set date should be upheld.

This contest is completely understandable, as there are a bunch of really great entries to pick from, as well as the holiday tie-up. I'm not contesting the justification for the lateness, because as far as I'm concerned it IS justified.

But downplaying the situation isn't necessary. Sure, I and everyone else wants to see the results, but the wait's not really a problem. And knowing uzo, he's likely been dissecting each sprite meticulously to make his judgment, so his scores will probably be detailed and very to the point. But don't give him a half-joking week/two-week deadline when he's already three days late. He'll get it done when he gets it done.

I think the major difference from the Nov contest with this one is that the entries for Nov were submitted early while the Dec entries were submitted on the last possible moment.

Anyway, I have a suggestion for the January contest onward, why not we decide the winners by poll instead of having a tribunal? People are still free to comment on the sprites on the poll thread. And the winners get to be notified in time.

No more judges. Just a plain old poll where everyone can give votes.
Title: Re: November 2014 Castlevania Dungeon Sprite Contest
Post by: Dracula9 on December 03, 2014, 10:29:20 PM
That could be interesting. But what if the polls are open during a period where there isn't much forum activity, and only two or three votes get cast? The variable nature of an open vote can backfire by its very nature. Having a judging panel might be a bit of a scheduling pain, but at least it's a guaranteed number of votes.

The poll voting will be first tested on the December music contest. If it works then I'll request an implementation of such method for the January sprite contest since there are already judges for the December sprite contest.

The results!

_______________________________________ ___________________________________
UZO

1st Place - 4 Points - The Plot Twist
From the moment I saw your entry I knew this was what truly embodied the contest theme. You hit all the points you needed, and gave it a haunting flair. The work is immediately and easily identifiable as Dracula. I think the way you did the imagery, the representation of the forms, the somewhat classic spooky skull face, etc, all lends to the identification of the character. The countless souls reaching up to the main body is also very haunting and symbolic I believe as if they’re the souls collected by the Crimson Stone reaching up to their captor. To top it all off the execution is just spectacular.

2nd Place - 2 Points - Dracula 9
I’m really impressed with how much you’ve improved over the years. Taking on this kind of contest was pretty ballsy. I have to give you some respect points for that at the very least. The scale is also very crazy, and really awesome to see. What pushed you down to second place can be summed up as not recognisable and execution.

While Dracula (or ‘Dracul’) has many ties to ‘the dragon’ I don’t think this piece really identifies itself as Dracula. To me it is indistinguishable from, lets say, a Zombie Dragon remake into SotN scale. I know you intended the red spot on the chest to be the Crimson Stone, but unlike The Plot Twist’s entry which also uses this feature, when you remove the Crimson Stone from the piece there isn’t any way to know it’s Dracula. I know the Crimson Stone is what ti is only because you told me. For The Plot Twist’s entry I know that is what it is because the piece is identifiable as Dracula, and I know this is a Castlevania sprite contest, and the added imagery of the red souls reaching up toward it. The difference is absolutely crucial.

Execution wise it’s pretty impressive in it’s own right, especially for the scale you took it. It does however seem to suffer from a look of early gaming pixel art. I’m not sure if it was your intention or not, but I believe pixel art has evolved and progressed beyond that amateurish look for a reason.

Regardless though it is a piece you can, and should, be proud of for sure.

3rd Place - 1 Point - Kaonstantine
Once again I feel conflicted about setting your work so low in the results. Your execution and creativity is ridiculously high among the contestants as it was in the last contest. I think once again though you’ve kind of jumped off the rails a little beyond the guidelines of the contest. However I couldn’t push you lower because the pure quality of execution just shines out among the other entries.

I really liked the design, and the crazy sickening imagery embodied by it. It really makes me think “The Dark Lord”. It is easily identifiable as Mathias, and I think that was really interesting. I actually didn’t feel that was a problem, nor any reason to push it down the list. Most of my contention was more along the lines of straying outside the bounds you would normally see for Dracula’s final form, as well as the piece resembling more of a full art piece than a sprite.

This is a sprite contest, and while your entry was indeed pixel art, it wasn’t much of a ‘sprite’. It lacks the smaller scale, and color stylizations, that would be associated with a sprite. This goes especially if we take the established Castlevania styles into consideration. Even when I imagine this design being scaled down to that size, I can’t imagine how it would transition well. More so I can’t really imagine what size it ‘should’ be even if it was to be turned into a sprite at any Castlevania sprite scale.

Had that not been an issue, you’d have easily taken second place at least.

Did Not Place - Jop
I can’t necessarily determine, without knowing it is suppose to be Dracula, that this is not just a normal enemy in a level, or a mid boss. It reminds me of the SotN Library boss, and the Inverted Alchemy lab fire demon enemies. It comes off as a ‘big’ normal enemy the most.

Did Not Place - Dovermicelli
For me the werewolf and bat wings don’t really jive. It feels like a really odd combination, even though Dracula rightfully should have both wolf and bat powers.

Did Not Place - ZeroSaberGreen
This entry is obviously not completed so I don’t really feel I can accurately critique it. If you happen to finish it I will be happy to amend my judgement for this entry (but it will not effect the outcome of course).

DARKMAN

1st Place - 4 Points - Dracula 9
I think that this entry speaks for itself. The time and energy spent on creating this monstrosity truly shows and I can see the passion flowing from this work.  I am a stickler for details and the itching on this creature’s texturing is amazingly done! It translates well on your mockup as well. This is definitely an advanced piece. You can even see the differences between the texturing of the bone of the nail to the scales of the dragon. There are even subtle details such as the cat eyes along the arms and the Crimson Stone. Dracula’s transformation into a dragon tells a story and that is good narrating and knowledge of theme. Its hard to believe that in the short time that you began on this contest that you still tried to get a tail in there!  The slight shift in color values is superb as well as your color choices. The only thing more you could do to this boss is to add animation to but that is just a nitpick and not required for this contest to take the gold!

2nd Place - 2 Points - The Plot Twist
You almost had first place again! It was a really close call for me because I love this piece! Honestly, if it wasn’t for the scale of the 1st place entry you would of won hand’s down. I think if I would had some animation to this piece you would of actually been able to beat the first place entry but I digress. This boss screams theme and is just awesome. The perspective of the wolf and bat and the positioning of the individual bodies just look amazing. To sprite is one thing, but to be able to sprite in multiple perspectives and make everything feel coherent is a master artist technique. You should really feel proud of this piece! The crying tears as an excellent nod to fans of the series and it also shows the great story-telling aspect of your work.  The creature coming out of the piles of the dead also has a subtle hint of Leigon. What I truly love about this piece is that shading on the aura of the hands I can totally see that energy blast starting to form in mind. Also your transition of the darker reds leading up to the body of the creature to the other parts of the body is amazing! Superb color choices and even better shading.

3rd Place - 1 Point - Kaonstantine
Wow, this is an awesome version of Dracula. I believe if you had more time this piece could have been pushed even more, but that would be true about any entry. You shading is outstanding particular your shadows and light sources. The subtle touches where the flame highlights the wings and light the darker portion of the horned skull shows your artistic mastery. I am also a huge fan of your asymmetry, particular the knee pad decoration and the horned skull on one side.Your varied color tones and shading are amazing. You even have detailing in the face and it has a nice resemblance to the subject matter, particularly Mathias. This looks like a HD version of Dracula for a 2D Fighter similar to Castlevania Judgement.

I really really like this piece. Good color choices and shading. My only suggestion is for you to start experimenting on doing dynamic poses and also getting reference on your subject matter. You tend to do very well with your spriting on the torso and arms but neglect the bottom half of your characters. By doing this your characters tend to look static and dead-on posing (which is not the most ideal for posing characters). Also the illusion of weight plays a factor when doing creatures, monsters, etc. Remember my suggestion of looking up mythical creatures like Satyr or even Pan from LOS? Look at how they stand.Your sprite could have benefited from that type of stance. Maybe you should start doing just one sprite and  doing a variety of poses for just that on sprite. It’s tedious but I think would be a good exercise for you  especially since you have improved so much in such a short time. Also, don’t be afraid of adding animation to your entries to build your confidence. Some of your other animation that I have seen is starting to look really good.

Donvermicelli
This creature reminds me of the creature seen in Bram Stoker’s Dracula minus the wings. I really like the design.  I particular like the shading inside the mouth and inside of the wings., I think you could have pushed the color variance on the body of the character particularly between the areas with the fur and the smoother areas such as the torso and arms and feet. I understand that you normally don’t sprite so large, but this is a solid entry if this is the case that could be improved upon without any given time constraints. I would of also liked to see some additional texturing on the top of the wing that is further back. It translate to just black to me.

Zero Saber Green
What happened? I like everything about this piece to where it was going. Unfortunately it was not finished. Maybe you could finish it in another contest or just the sprite thread. That’s a fantastic looking player bar. Good 3d like effect with the wrapping and good color variation.  Also the particles on the energy boomerang is another subtle touch that works great. The shading on the boss as starting to look good. As a fan of hand drawn sprites, you should push yourself to finish this piece. I wouldn’t mind playing a fan-game drawn in this style.

ANDROID

Wow!  This...was...hard!  All of the entries are amazingly done, and for each of them I can imagine myself holding a portable system or controller and see myself playing against these bosses!  I don’t know if that’s a common feeling or not, but to me it speaks volumes about the talent of each of the artists and how well done are their entries!  It makes me wish “The Dungeon” was an actual game developer, and we could just design our own game using everything we have here.  I’m sure future contests are going to add to that feeling.  Great job to everyone!

1st Place - 4 Points - theplottwist
What you’ve created here is absolutely spectacular!  I have never imagined how any part of the 1999 game would look, but if Iga ever has he should come talk to you!  Your design of (and ideas for) this piece are fantastic!  It may or may not have been intentional parts of your design, but I love the symbolism I see in your entry.  The wolf and bat heads, the demon/dragon-like center head, the bloody tears, the legion of bloody corpses, and though they aren’t actually a parts of Dracula himself (and thus were not included in the reasoning for my judgments), the pieces you created in your background as well!  I really love what you’ve come up with here.  You revealed your hand pretty early, and many joked or truly expected they already knew who would be the winner.  However, that early reveal may have inspired some of your competition to step up their game, which made for some really amazing entries and some really difficult judging!  I deliberated for hours on how I was going to rate the top 3 pieces, and it’s really still a very close call!  You’ve created something amazing though, so congratulations on getting first place -- at least from me anyway!  Keep up the great work and awesome entries in contests to come!

2nd Place - 2 Points - Dracula9
This is an incredible entry...maybe immaculate even!  I don’t recall how many hours you said you’d spent on this project, but I think it shows!  The ornate detail in the carving of the nails, the variant shaping of the teeth, the patterned body -- all absolutely marvelous!  What really gets me about this piece is that when I imagine playing the game this is in, I never see it coming.  I’ve already defeated the “final” form of Dracula, I’m guiding my character back out and wondering why I’m still in control when the game is clearly over and BAM!  I get smacked in the face with one last battle against this guy!  This was in no way an easy decision, and my wife will testify that I reasoned this way and that for two days before I finally sat down to make a decision!  In the end, I hope my award of second place doesn’t make you feel like you wasted all of those hours.  I’m sure the practice has even further increased your skill in an area that, clearly, you already posses some pretty masterful talent!  You’ve also created something that I think we’ll all look at in years to come and still be amazed!  Way to go!  If you put half as much effort into an entry for the December contest, the Belmonts will be eating some amazing meals!

3rd Place - 1 Point - Konstantine
This is an amazing entry, and I especially enjoyed the various references/symbolic elements that you included.  The wings look awesome and are surely a nod to Dracula’s bat and dragon lore, the horns emphasize his evil/demonic nature, the upside-down crucifix as if to reference Lisa’s unfair execution, the fact that it pierces through Dracula, showing how it has affected him, the face on his greaves as if a Great Armor was sacrificed to forge them…perhaps my thoughts aren’t quite aligned with your original intentions, but I still appreciate the way you worked these elements into your piece!  Your overall work and shading is done so well that it looks more like it’s been hand-drawn with pencils as opposed to created pixel-by-pixel on a computer.  With everything you’ve already included I wish you’d had the time to continue a little further – so he could perhaps be…hmm…wearing some pants X-D, as well as to see what other features you would have added.  It doesn’t quite feel like a final form to me...maybe the first form of a Castlevania Judgment style game, or a second form of any other Castlevania game, but when I imagine myself beating this guy, I feel like I expect there to be a little more after I finish him.  In my mind there’s always one last form that is much less human and much more monster-like or demon-like.  But those are just a few of my personal thoughts.  Incredible work you’ve done here, and it makes me eager to see what else you’ve got up your sleeves!

Alternates:
Jop:
I can pretty clearly see the goat/bat/dragon look you were attempting with this piece, and it looks great!  I can easily picture your entry in a game, probably on a Game Boy Advance.  I can imagine myself playing that Castlevania game for hours, finally fighting your Dracula and wishing the game wasn’t over yet -- they are never long enough, are they?!!  Your original comment seems to hint that you might have been considering to continue working on it and later update your entry.  If that was the case, I wish you had!  You already do great work, and I think with a bit more time you can do greater work!  I hope you continue to practice and participate in these contests, ever improving your ability!

Donvermicelli:
Yours is another well done piece that reminds me of my Game Boy Advance and the many great games I played on it.  The way you colored/textured the hair on your entry sticks out to me -- it looks awesome!  The wings look pretty good as well, but there is something that seems off about them...unfortunately it’s something I can’t quite put my finger on. :-/  Other than that, I think you have a really great entry!  Whether I’m judging or not, I look forward to seeing what else you bring to the table!

ZeroSaberGreen:
Your entry sends me back to the Game Boy Color days, but that’s a great thing in my opinion!  I certainly don’t in any way mean your entry is sub-par or anything, and honestly I don’t know what about it makes me recall the GBC.  I looks like you have a pretty solid start here, but unfortunately you were unable to finish! :-(  I don’t know what happened, but it’s a bummer because I would love to have had the opportunity to see the whole picture of what you had in mind.  Don’t let this get you down though!  You’ve clearly got talent in this area, so stay involved in months to come, only then, make sure you push yourself all the way to the finish line!  You’ve got too much to offer to quit early!

Congrats all!

On a side note, I agree with many of the sentiments about having a poll for contests.  It would be neat to add popular opinion poll as an additional judge.  However, to use this as the only means of judging, I'd be concerned as well that a time of low activity would affect the vote.  And while these are details that would be worked out if we tried to implement judging-by-poll-alone, my first thoughts were questioning exactly when you'd open/close it to ensure a fair amount of activity?  But again, if we really want to implement that we can figure out details at that point in time.
Also, while I can't speak for anyone else, I know I'd appreciate receiving the comments on my entry -- especially any tips/pointers/encouragement coming from those more experienced.  I could see a poll leading to less comments because everyone can vote really quickly and move on.  If it's not "part of the job" like it is for the judges, would people still do it?  Maybe...I dunno...just my thoughts is all.

Well, I can't say I'm surprised there. I told you you likely had it, plot.  ;)

Congrats to everyone else who placed!

And to answer your question, uzo, it wasn't my intention going in, but yes, I did wind up going with a sort of SNES style. When I do superbig sprites like this that tends to come out on its own. I blame it on the Statue of the Gods from FFVI.

Congratulations to all the winners!
The first page has been modified to show this.

How about "Popular Vote" (via poll) counts as one of the Judges?
The poll locks the day a contest end.

I'm going with Jorge's thoughts on the poll with a one day lock. Then we have the judges a few days to collect their thoughts and give out a verdict.

Congrats to all of you!

I really like plot's entry, it really feels like a CV final boss. I also liked the other entries but they were not as fitting as this (D9's felt more like a RPG boss, and Kaos' looked much like Satan). The other one were also cool, but not as epic as the other ones.

Nice job! I'm glad I didn't enter LOL (but I'll crush you all with that music contest, mwahahaha /sarcasm). :)

Congrats to all the winners! I had a blast participating and also learned a lot while making my own sprite.
With that in mind I'd also like to give a big thanks to the judges for their efforts and their commentary, I'll try to do better next time.

 :o

I must say I'm extremelly surprised. It was an honor to compete with you dudes.

Dracula9:
Your entry scared the hell out of my soul for its sheer size and detail. I love the ivory-like texture on the wings. I mean, it may not have been your intention, but the wings give me the impression that they are made of a smooth stone-like material.

As I mentioned, I also though about going with the dragon motif, and even did sketches on it, but figured that I couldn't pull it off on the context I wanted, and I'd never be able to pull it off on this magnitude.

Incredible job on texturing this monstruosity, and amazing display of patience.

Kaonstantine:
Your entry is ridiculously well done. The part I specially love is the lighting on the wings and boots. Young Dracula is a concept that is too underexplored on the series, and Konami could benefit lots from it. Well, if they pulled it off as well as you did, that is. When I saw it, after Dracula9's entry, I though I was done for.

I've posted about your artwork on my Facebook, and it was unanimous among my friends that you two have uncanny pixelling skill. You dudes rock, not only those who placed, but everyone who joined the contest: Jop, Donvermicell and  ZeroSaberGreen. I look foward to be scared like this again!

I mean, it may not have been your intention, but the wings give me the impression that they are made of a smooth stone-like material.

Maybe not actual stone, but that was the sort of texture I was going for. Armor plating or something. The Genesis-esque shading on the wing exteriors only sold that look more.

EDIT: Also, it might be for the best if trophy awards were only displayed once per item, and each individual contest ranking is displayed on that award's group page. Otherwise, I foresee people have eighty-six bats and Deaths pouring down from their profile.

The Awards Box system is set up such that you can choose which awards to show in the box, by going to your Forum Profile and on the left go to the "Show Awards" option.

It will show you a list of all the awards you have.  If you click on the little green Plus Sign next on the right side of an award's row, you can choose to put it in your box.  This is useful if you have more than the five or so awards you can normally fit in a box.

The box doesn't grow (I didn't want members to have 50+ icons on their row, plus it also starts to mess up the posts' layout), so once the box is full you can swap out awards.  You don't 'have' to have all your sprite awards.

However, if you have fewer awards than what the box holds, it'll automagically have those.  So people who only have one award have no choice but to have that one award in their box (you can't choose to hide them, but if you have more than what fits in the box, you can choose which ones to show).

I hope that makes sense.

Needless to say, an up-and-coming award-less forum member who does nothing but win contest awards will have nothing but contest awards in their box, at least until the box is full.  I personally don't mind seeing the cool animated bats, reapers, and medusaheads.

I don't have any green checks. Just a green plus to favorite that award.

I'm assuming the check doesn't show up until one has more awards than the box can normally hold?

No prob. Just sprite nothing but legs in dynamic poses and see how that goes.

As I mentioned before studying Spiderman would be a good start...

First of all, congratulations to theplottwist and Dracula9

Kaonstantine:

Thanks, man. I knew most people here was expecting Dracula to be less human and more like a demon or beast. I wanted to try a different path since I still have no idea of what will be the final look of Dracula in my game. I also love the lighting on the bodies falling down in your submission.

To all contestants: Thank you. I can't wait to see your next submissions on the next contests. And thank you to the judges for their great reviews  :).
