^My initial reaction.
My second reaction was relief and mirth. Not to get too political but in the words of New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez "Hey Republicans, don't worry, that burn is covered under the Affordable Care Act."

I suppose taking apart Obama's no. 1 project, controversial as it may have been, isn't as simple as building a wall.  :P

The wall's useless. Trump should know that (though it doesn't surprise me at all that he doesn't). Modern weapons & equipment would tear down said wall with ease. Got a wall problem? No problem! Have some C-4, C-12, or even a nuke! Ka-Bloowy!!! Wall gone. Trump just wasted billions of taxpayer's dollars on a useless piece of defence.

It's supposed to stop immigrants, and be "unclimbable" too bad this thing that'll cost us billions can be defeated by a 32 foot ladder that can be bought in any hardware/home improvement store. It's also pointless because the number of illegal immigrants from Mexico has not only been slowing down but reversing for about a decade. https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/when-will-gop-rhetoric-on-immigration-catch-up-to-the-truth/2016/01/24/7811ec96-bbaa-11e5-99f3-184bc379b12d_story.html (https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/when-will-gop-rhetoric-on-immigration-catch-up-to-the-truth/2016/01/24/7811ec96-bbaa-11e5-99f3-184bc379b12d_story.html)

Well, I'm glad my House Representative, Don Young (who is a Republican) essentially said "I'm not voting for any repeal-and-replace plan until I'm convinced it gets my constituency a better deal than what they already have on the table, and this ain't it." This is a sentiment echoed by both of Alaska's senators as well.

As much as we want the ACA gone up here, we see no point in trading it out for something which is obviously worse with even a cursory examination.

Not surprising. They rushed to get rid of the ACA without a real plan.

And they underestimated how hard it would be to please the entire GOP.

The moment they'd make a concession to the House Freedom Caucus, they'd piss off the more moderate conservatives, and when they made a concession to them, they lost the other side.

I read an article that suggested they should toss orthodoxy out the window and vote with Democrats on parts of the effort that they both agree on, but the bigger problem, and both sides are guilty of this, is partisan politics. Neither side wants the other side to be successful, and that has completely taken over the political landscape. The GOP started this under Obama, and now the Democrats are unironically doing the exact same things step for step.

I miss the Greatest Generation. This kind of shit didn't happen under them. But I really wonder if Gen X, or God help us, Millennials- will be any better the day they dominate Washington

Partisan politics has pretty much been with us from day 1, and while it comes and goes in terms of severity, most people I've spoken to (and myself) seem to really identify the end of George HW Bush's presidency in the early 1990's as when it really started coming to a head. When Bill Clinton and Newt Gingrich worked together (despite being from opposing parties) during Clinton's second term, AMAZING STUFF GOT DONE. Same went for Reagan's presidency -- much as he's touted as the Republican Superman, all of his greatest successes involved reaching across the aisle and working with his opponents, and his failures tended to result from him not doing that.

What a concept to the folks in Washington!

George W. Bush was able to transform the September 11th attacks into something that he was able to use to largely bridge the gap in Congress, but that was a tactic of diminishing returns, and eventually by his final year the Blind Partisan gridlock was so bad nobody could really accomplish anything -- this is something that Barack Obama did very little to fix, only offering a token effort here and there when the cameras were rolling.

Trump isn't even offering that level of "lipservice bipartisanship".

The problem ultimately comes with that sort of gridlock stemming from the fact that both sides scream "we need a bipartisan effort!" but being unwilling to compromise on anything. Democrats want Republicans to sign onto Democrat plans 100% with no meaningful GOP input, and the GOP expects vice versa.

Because Politics in DC is no longer about doing a job, or serving the people, or building the nation to new and better heights: it's about winning.

Winning at any and all costs, no matter how bloody or steep the figurative body count.

We're not far removed from Cassius arranging to plant 23 knives in Caesar anymore, and if that happens, we're back to the bad old days. (Even though a lot of people in DC probably deserve it.)

Where the hell is Henry Clay when you need him?!

Oh right. He's been dead for ages.

>wah millenials

oh boy here we go not this dumb shit again

Hey. I am a Millennial. I can talk shit about my generation. I live amongst it.

And from what I know of the Baby Boomers, and what I know of my own upbringing, and in general sort of the way generations have played out in the US since WW2, Millennials have the potential to be just as bad if not worse, than Baby Boomers. Millennials, aside from Gen Y, are sometimes called "Echo Boomers", because their upbringing closely reflects their parents. Raised in the postwar opulence of the 50's and 60's, Boomers became rebellious in the late 60's as they entered early adulthood in the experimental and tumultuous decade of the 70's.

Similarly, Gen Y was raised in the economic boom of the 80's and 90's, and went through the economic and political turmoil of the 00's and now the 10's.

And  just like their parents before them were the hippies, Millennials became SJW's and Tumblerinas. Just replace the long hair and tiedye shirts with pink sidecuts and 50's horned glasses.

Honestly the similarities are striking. Boomers were once described years ago almost identically to the way Millennials are described today.

Partisan politics has pretty much been with us from day 1,
Funny you should mention that, because being a bit knowledgable about history, when I saw the 2016 election play out, when people were shocked and horrified, I saw what I'd read in the history books. American politics have always been dirty. Andrew Jackson and John Adams hated each other and insulted each other. "Honest Abe" and his team technically cheated the convention. It wasn't until the 20th century that our politics started getting sanitized, at least on the surface. Culminating in that carefully crafted image that we've had since Reagan. if anything, what I saw in the 2016 elections was a return to form.

I feel bad for the Trump voters in the same way that I feel bad for my niece who is about the age where she's going to learn the truth about Santa Clause.

So am/will I, but you should know as well as I do what a nonspecific catch-all set of buzzwords bitching about the generation has turned into.

I don't care about the bitching so long as it's warranted, which sadly isn't often the case when it comes up.

That's debatable. Most of the time it is warranted. All that "special snowflake" talk is absolutely true, for instance. As is what Clint Eastwood referred to as the "pussy generation"

To be fair, Ive never heard much of this millennial bashing in person. Although there does tend to be a certain stereotype of the Millennial.

I'm fairly conservative, (I came out of college more conservative than I went in). We had some family over some time ago before Christmas. My cousin came over. Gen X I suppose, raised traditional Italian, VERY conservative. Like, Fox News Conservative. We were talking about my first car I had just bought, (2003 Grand Marquis) and I mentioned how I wanted something with a V8, and that I liked it because it was a very "American" feeling car, last of the large, V8, classically styled sedans.

He quips, "I never knew this side of you! I had you figured for a Prius!"

There is a very unfortunate stereotype of the Millennial. And as with all stereotypes, they tend to come from somewhere.

And like all stereotypes, perpetuating them doesn't really do much of anything but be an annoyance, regardless of how much source validity may or may not be present.

And yeah, dude, it happens way more than you might think. We are, it seems, responsible for literally everything wrong with the state of the country--the deficits, the recessions, the market rate drops, the hyperinflation, all of it's the millenials' fault. Because a lot of us are bitchy with smartcars and weird haircuts. Those things definitely totally correlate. Apparently.

Perhaps you've just been lucky to have more surroundings of reasonable conservative/previous gen. groups than I have, I suppose. Gotta a whole slew of "young people suck and ruin everything MAGAMAGAMAGAMAGAMAGA!" folks around here.

Also, consider the definition of warranted less literally and more based on situational context.

Is a millenial being a stereotypical shitlord? Then call them on it. With my fucking blessing.

Is a millenial simply in your presence and bothering you with their mere existence regardless of how they're actually behaving? Then shove it.

Three guesses which one I deal with more.

My folks are Immigrant Boomers from Argentina.  I find that many times, Immigrant Boomers have more in common with the Greatest Gen than with most American Boomers. Probably the upbringing. While in the US, Boomers were rebelling against their parents by growing their hair and doing drugs and protesting on school campuses, in Argentina they were dealing with a military dictatorship that wouldn't allow that sort of thing, thus leading to a more conservative lean on society at large, since communistic ideas were not allowed, while they thrived in the US in hippies.

Ah, that most definitely explains it, then. First-generation immigrants, I believe, get a bit of a pass on such things since their base cultural upbringings and priorities/ideals were and are very different from those in the States.

The general gist of the problem with US Boomer mentality simply chalks up to the rebellious lifestyle not lasting forever. Obviously it doesn't apply to every single Boomer, but I think Carlin said it best:

Quote from: Mr. Conductor
A lot of these cultural crimes I've been complaining about can be blamed on the Baby Boomers, something else I'm getting tired of hearing about...whiny, narcissistic, self-indulgent people with a simple philosophy: "GIMME IT, IT'S MINE!" "GIMME THAT, IT'S MINE!" These people were given everything. Everything was handed to them. And they took it all: sex, drugs, and rock and roll, and they stayed loaded for 20 years and had a free ride. But now they're staring down the barrel of middle-age burnout, and they don't like it. So they've turned self-righteous. They want to make things harder on younger people. They tell 'em, abstain from sex, say no to drugs; as for the rock and roll, they sold that for television commercials a long time ago...so they could buy pasta machines and Stairmasters and soybean futures! They're cold, bloodless people. It's in their slogans, it's in their rhetoric: "No pain, no gain." "Just do it." "Life is short, play hard." "Shit happens, Deal with it." "Get a life." These people went from 'do your own thing' to 'just say No'. They went from 'love is all you need' to 'whoever winds up with the most toys wins'.

The only thing I hate about all this shit, quit making it mandatory to have to have the shit. I don't want it, don't force me to have it. I haven't had a personal doctor in 13 years (my childhood doc is long dead, the other is long retired), and haven't needed one. That's money I could put to my bills every month, but nope, forced to put it on something I'll probably not need for another 10-20 years barring a disaster, and I don't do stupid shit that could make me have to see a doctor.

Simple, you want it, you pay for it, you don't want it, they still force you to pay to have it. Bullshit, I don't need your or anyone's fucking healthcare plan.
