Title: Happy 30th Birthday Castlevania!
Post by: EstebanT on September 25, 2016, 10:23:28 PM
Konami is clearly doing nothing to celebrate and thus probably no games in development. We will all miss you! But you will live on within the Bloodstained games and community.

Cheers to both the legacy of Castlevania and us oldies! hahahaha.
By the way, I'm just promoting that the sprite contest (http://castlevaniadungeon.net/forums/index.php/topic,8788.0.html) in celebration of the anniversary is about to end and in less than a day. I will open up the poll for all you guys to vote for the winner after the deadline.

Happy birthday to what feels like a dear old friend. Ahh Castlevania 1, the day I beat you was one of my happiest and proudest gaming moments.

While I think CV3 is the best Castlevania on the NES, 1 has an undeniable charm. A true classic that remains evocative and enjoyable today, and will still be so in another 30 years. (Though my reflexes might not let me play it much anymore by that time!)

Happy birthday Castlevania! And to us oldies whom discovered the tantalizing magic of this game from the beginning. A one-hit wonder that became much more so as the years ticked by.

Happy Birthday Castlevania!

I would like to hope the future will bring us more great games in this franchise, or maybe the spirit of the series will happily move on into Bloodstained.

What a great night for the humans to pay tribute to Dracula. We Ill need such a savior as Konami though.

For the same reasons you won't hear Kojima talk about Metal Gear you can't expect to hear IGA talk about Castlevania. It's sad. Like Konami took away their children. To hell with Konami. IGA has my full support moving forward in the genre.

Who knows, maybe every 100 years the franchise will get a reboot that actually works out. I think the classicvania's and metroidvanias we have are more than enough to count it as the best gaming franchise ever. Ya know... I even liked Mirror of Fate except for that plot. I'm not holding onto hope, so don't take this next sentence as that, but if the NX is partially mobile and Konami is focusing on mobile and gambling machines, maybe there is something not too far ahead that resembles a real Castlevania.

Old fart here. Just wanted to keep the spirit of all the puns and memes and tropes and sitch. So with that I say what a horrible night to have the curse of knowing I was 13 when this game came out. When I first played this game in the states nearly a year later maybe longer I thought little of it at first as SMB had my fancy. Yeah now that I think about it my younger bro got the NES for his 8th birthday which was 4 days prior to the states getting this golden nugget of a hair puller of a nut tugger of an ass cracker of a pingas snapper of a hootnanny of a game. So anyway I was I think a freshman in high school when I first played it. I could not get very far in it becuase I did not know about going up or down steps or how to use the sub weapon. In this remarkable time we live in with Youtube walk-throughs and in game Tutor the Turtles it makes me now appreciate poorly written instruction manuals. I could have beaten CVII if I had given more respect to the manuals. In any case I beat this game as a sophmore in June of 89 after beating number 2 first. Yeah I don't much believe in order. All the same beating this game and Ninja Gaiden in the same year along with Batman, Bionic Commando, Zelda II and Mega Man II made realize that we gamers  actually do have skill. We had to, games like these demanded it becuase the games were so very well thought out. What do all these games have in common? They followed, yes even Zelda II followed the formula that Castlevania laid the ground work for. A remarkable title that stands alone as a prototype challenging puzzle platformer. I appreciate what SCVIV and SOTN did for the series but this is the title that is the flag bearer, the origin of what the series is. A hard charging, mind crushing, ball busting, heart breaking, psyche smashing, therapy causing, AVGN creating gaming experience that Konami is utter dipshits not to return to. By all means have your cake and your Bloodstained if it brings those yo-yos to their senses. This Akuma Jou Dracula is where gaming should return to. Happy Birthday to the biggest neglected brain child of gaming. Cheers, cheers, cheers, may Vania live 3000 years.

I'm a little late for the party and feel really ashamed, since a news website is what let me knew of this special day. Happy birthday Castlevania.
"Farewell, land of my birth. Never again will these eyes gaze upon your beauty." would be appropriate for the actual franchise state, but I'll wait until the morning sun vanquish this horrible and what seems almost eternal night.

i'm sure someone will step in and save it within the next 5 years.
arc-sys worked on the last contra,
treasure worked on the last gradius,
there's no way the series will die, even if it's only kept alive through hacks & fan games.

I don't play the pokies but I'd give it a go if it came to a pub nearby - it looks like it has Hector as the character in it instead of having a Belmont, which seems a little odd (even Alucard would make more sense).

Castlevania can live on in other franchises and stories and stuff.   it's very easy to create similiar themed content without plagiarizing.

look how other series have inspired others to make original yet very similiar concepts

a simple example is Demon's Souls, Dark Souls and Bloodborne.   them coming from the same developer is not the point, each of those games could have been invented from entirely different sources, and still share things in common.   and the fact remains that despite being similiar, they are not the same IP.   Dark Souls is not Demon's Souls 2, Bloodborne is not a Dark Souls.

So really, things like Castlevania can be adopted and reinvented in similiar and superior ways.    you can see how even the hunters vs vampire/etc. theme exists in all sort of independent stories and games.

so Castlevania is not the only source the concept can live in.    anyone can create spiritual successors to Castlevania in tons of ways.  the concept in itself has infinite potential.

Castlevania had its era, but its fans can create independent masterpieces that are not called Castlevania.  It's very possible to reinvent and surpass Castlevania, and that in itself would make something a worthy inspired series.     So with what was experienced and absorbed from Castlevania, its fans can expand Castlevania's legacy in different creations with different unique titles.

That's so not the point. It's the 30th Anniversary, this is huge and it's not being celebrated.
Konami are the parent and aren't even honouring CV's memory.
That's like saying if your child has little to no part in your life you can just celebrate their 30th birthday with someone who is very similar.. Not the point..

I can understend what all are saying but as an example i dont celebrate my birthday so really i dont care if Konami celebrate the birthday of Castlevania its up to them to do that, what you must think its that you enjoy what you most like, I celebrate this year only because i have facebook groups, forums and deviant realted to Castlevania and wanted to support them but really i dont wanted to do that (prefer to celebreat every time i make something for castlevania instead) so i think its better to not push someone to make something they dont want to do, so im ok if they didnt wanted to do as im ok to not celebrate my birthday, but again i understend to the others when they want to celebrate so yeahhh!!! wiiiii!!!

The point is that 30 years is a milestone and fans are already saddened by the state of CV.

I was hoping they would use the anniversary to make an announcement of a new Castlevania game.

Sadly, Castlevania's 30th came at a time where my fandom for the franchise had hit an all-time low.

I find myself not really caring anymore, and it makes me sad. But with things at Konami NOT reversing course, I think honestly Castlevania is going to become one of those things where I leave it behind but occasionally look back with fondness on -- same thing happened with Final Fantasy in the post-FFXI world and Pokemon post-Ruby/Sapphire.

That being said, celebrating Castlevania's 30th feels a lot like celebrating Abraham Lincoln's birthday -- it's a nice gesture, but it's not like there's anyone at the other end to say thank you. It just sort of feels like a hollow pursuit.

I'm beginning to wonder now if any game franchise even can really be long lasting like James Bond, Doctor Who, or Star Trek.

Well, Pokemon still has a grip hold on the younger ones, so they might have a rolling age fandom.

Mario?

Mario will last, because he's an iconic but also extremely universal character who can be applied to almost anything. No one would blink twice if there was a Pachinko Mario game.

Here's a better example, there was Hotel Mario on the Philips Cdi, nobody cares either way. When people mention Zelda, take one look at the Cdi games and are instantly revolted. Granted the Zelda games are a more distasteful representation of the Nintendo franchise, but it's also because the undertone of the games in general are a) more niche than a more universal title (eg Mario) and b) taken more seriously by its fans than said titles.

In conclusion Castlevania slot machines with chibi characters = Cardinal $in

I wouldn't care about the CV casino games if there were a serious console CV announcement as well.

It's the fact that the casino games are apparently all that's going on with Konami's CV that's so off putting.

Migami's CV... Now that's a different story, isn't it? ;-)

To be fair, all of those properties you've mentioned are older than most of the well known video game franchises let alone a vast majority of video game franchises and series.
Basically, video games are younguns in comparison.

Which was entirely my point. We will likely never see a video game series (possible exceptions: Mario and Tetris) that will really survive to see 50 years old. Most crap out well before they hit 20 and most that get that far are Franchise Zombies by the age of 30.

Videogames live by the rules of Logan's Run.
