Title: Castlevania Dawn of Symphony (NEW HACK!)
Post by: DarkPrinceAlucard on December 31, 2016, 12:31:35 PM
Hey guys, for those who are fans of my last Future Alucard hack you probably saw one of my videos where I gave a preview of the a SOTN related Alucard hack, this hack will be titled Castlevania Dawn of Symphony, it will serve as a direct sequel to Castlevania Symphony of the night and will feature many returning elements as well as characters from SOTN. The story was really done in a very convincing way and I feel fans will have fun uncovering the many references within the story to SOTN as well as how the events of this game ties into SOTN as a sequel to it.

Returning characters from SOTN include
Alucard
Shaft
Richter Belmont
Maria
Dracula
Succubus

Special thanks to Jop/Julian for the new Alucard sprites and Caminopreacher for the new story.

Here are some images of the hack, I will upload a gameplay video later which will show the hack in action as well as give a glimpse at the new story.

The sprites are really inconsistent with AoS's sprite style. Other than that, good work so far.

Yea I would have to agree with you there, AOS is a more bright and vibrant game in comparison to other CV games like SOTN that used a dark and gothic look, but hey what can you do lol, I wanted a fanmade CVSOTN sequel so I had to use SOTN inspired sprites, but anyways thanks for the comment. :)

@Jop

Yea sorry this took longer than expected lol, got busy doing other things outside the web that took up so much of my time, I had planned on being done by now but instead I fell behind, but everything came along nicely I belive. :D

Called it just as I was about to listen to it. :V
Then again, considering the context it's pretty obvious to begin with anyway.

I'm starting to doubt that bringing SiIvaGunner's content here was a good idea...

Jokes aside, its impressive that you could do a new plot doing a hack like this, nice.

Very nicely done. But is it the video or Alucard's walking animation isn't as smooth as Soma's? Also you might want to change the palette of the "stoned" Alucard. It is too bright and messy. And is the damage number supposed to be black and red? You could change it into white with red outline you know.

Yea Alucard's walking animation is not as smooth as soma's because soma's was drawn out better to be honest, I think Jop did a good job but looking at soma's walking/running in comparison to this alucard's its obvious soma had more of his animations where drawn out between each step, I think it turned out good myself given what I had. :P

Also as far as the stoned thing, Its the same one that i used in my last to hacks actually, but I plan on replacing it anyways, and yes I wanted the numbers to be black and red so that was on purpose lol, I know exactly which part of Alucard's palette contains the color for those and I changed it myself to differentiate Alucard damage numder from Soma's.

@theplottwist

Yea I have saw, I think someone posted it in one of my other hacking topics somewhere, I would love to add it to the game but I need to find someone to show me how to music hack.

Actually with your gif it moves at a different speed between each frame than what it does within AOS, like I said earlier each one of Soma's sprites are drawn out in detail between each and every step and thus possess more animations that move in a a faster sequence, as such I had to replace 2 of his steps with one otherwise it was moving so fast you barely could make out his leg movements, if you want I can send you the file and you can see for yourself or you can attempt to see if you can find a fix.

Looks awesome!  I like what's happening in the screenshots.  But in the video... Alucard's head not bobbing for a few frames as he runs really bugs me.
Not sure if it's the filter, but it also looks like a lot of frames of animations are missing (you insist on recording with the emulator's video filters on).

Thanks man :), regarding the head thing I plan on working on the running sprites really soon to see if I can find a fix to make the running better, I have already pm'd Ken Leong who is the same guy who helped me with Arikado's running, but I will try one more time to correct it myself.

Also regarding the filter and frames, the filter is a HD one that just makes the game look better, I doubt it would have anything to do with missing frames since it does not affect it at all and I always have no frame skip checked, at best it may be the free video cam I am using but I did not notice any missing frames personally. But I recorded it using the filter because I think the graphics look better with xbrz filters, but I posted the images without them for fans who wanted a look at the game without them, but the next video I post will be without filters. :P

Oh no those are not "pallete" issues, the first one is like that because the sprite is to large to fit the entire wing, sadly there is nothing that can be done about that since you can not fit anymore without overlapping with another sprite entirely, the best that could be done would be a sprite edit and I may ask jop or do it myself at a later time once I get all the other sprites replaced. The second and third ones are sprites that I have not replaced yet and I will do so later, the actual palette for those is shared so there is no palette issue there is only the fact that those are still the old sprites that need to be replaced with the new ones I have.you can just send me the file through a pm when you get a chance and I will take it from here, thanks. ;)

I have no critique beyond a single one: Please turn Shaft's walking animation into a floating orb or something similar.

Him turning into that EXTREMELLY SMALL sitting Shaft is too funny for me to not comment on.

Outstanding job, by the way.

Thanks, If I had more room I would do something different with it but sadly I do not, the space for the walking is very restricted as in small and fitting anything other than what I have would overlap with sprites, I may see what I can do or if I can have some sprites made specifically for that animation alone because the sprites I have for shaft right now are the ones from SOTN and we all know those do not have any walking animations, the him floating the way he is now is the best alternative I had and since it had to be a certain size to even fit within the constraints it required it to be shrunk.

Well the SOTN ones are not that much different from the ROB ones, neither have a real "walking animation" since all he does is just float in his ball when he moves.

UPDATE

Ok I'm here to let everyone know I'm finally done!

This will be the official hack release, some details about the hack are that there has been a lot of changes made to the hack to try to make this as much of a new experience for fans who have played Aria of Sorrow as possible.

1,New fanmade story that serves as a sequel to Symphony of the Night
2,New enemy stats increase to make the game harder (this plays into the narrative of the story)
3.New Item layouts throughout the castle
4.Returning characters from SOTN such as Richter,Alucard,Maria, Shaft, Succubus, and Dracula
5.Fan favorite music has been added to the game such as Bloody Tears, Wicked Child, Dracula's Castle,Nocturne, and many more
6.Palette changes to the UI and Shaft's shop
7.New weapons such as Dark Pain, Stellar Sword, and Laser Blade
8.New item stats and attributes for some weapons

In addition to the changes above I have also kept all the items and changes from my previous hacks.

Special thanks to caminopreacher for the big help with the story, enemy stat, and item hacking and to Julian/Jop for providing the Alucard sprites.

Looks like there's a stray space in the key.

EDIT: Giving it a quick whirl, seems to be missing the percussion for some reason, though I haven't actually played the hack so I dunno how they actually sound in-game.

EDIT2: Okay, so it actually isn't using any percussion tracks in-game, that's weird.

Here are a couple videos of some of the ingame tracks in play,

The thing is that the gba uses directsond instruments for all of the tracks which means that all of the songs had to be manually edited within Anvil Studio to actually sound good within the game, also Aria only supports up to 7 tracks per song and pretty much all of the new tracks at least had 12 or more which means a lot of them had to be merged with similar instruments.

Still, this is pretty impressive.

Yea I saw some of your midi's over on the site I was using so I knew you probably could do it for me but to be honest I thought you would be to busy and pretty much by the time I realized I could ask you I had already found myself committed to a deadline of getting it released at a certain time so the last thing I wanted to do is ask you for a favor and give you a deadline as well lol.

But if your still interested then I may take you up on your offer, I can always such release the new hack using your new midi's as a form of a later update, there would be absolutely no rush either since I plan on starting to work on another DSvania hack anyways.

Hmm... I may do it on my downtime.
What are the limitations of what you need?
Number of channels, a certain length of time, certain instruments, etc.  Let me know and I can probably bring some tracks up.

Won't know when that will be, however.

Number of channels, a certain length of time, certain instruments, etc.  Let me know and I can probably bring some tracks up.

Won't know when that will be, however.

I will send you a pm once I have some spare time, currently busy at the moment, but there will be no rush to this so feel free to take your time with getting them done, I will just release a update for the hack at a later date once your done.
