Heavy Metal covers of Pop classics

It has become a trend lately for heavy metal bands to cover pop classics from the 70's, 80's, and 90's.
Some of those are covers loyal to the original sound of the songs, only heavier or with faster beats.
Other are actual remakes, which sound quite different from the original.

Fans of the heavy metal scene may remember Children of Bodom's cover of "Oops I did it again". Of course, that was more of a joke than an actual cover,
but CoB is a band which really enjoys making covers. Among other they covered "The final countdown" and made a really good cover of Billy Idol's "Rebel Yell".

After hearing several very good covers, I have decided to look for more and see how many there are in that style.
Concluding a long search, I was surprised to find out there are hundreds of those.

So, I had decided to make a collection.

Half of the covers I found are not worth mentioning, since they simply SUCK.
Covering pop classics in brutal Death Metal kinda ruins the songs.
Other are good covers, but have not been included out of different reasons, as such:
  • Covers that are too old and are actually as well-known as the originals.
    • Covers which sound too similar to the originals.
I mean, come on! If you're covering a song, at least try to put some of your own style into them.

Eventually, I came up with 24 songs. They are not only covers of pop, but also of some old disco and rock hits.

Firewind - maniac.mp3
To Die For -  In The Heat Of The Night.MP3
HIM - Wicked Game.mp3
Ozzy Osbourne - Stayin Alive.mp3
Black Messiah - Moskau.mp3
Hammerfall - My Sharona.mp3
Megaherz - Rock Me Amadeus .mp3
Dungeon - Call Me.mp3
Northern Kings - Hello.mp3
Twilight Guardians - La Isla Bonita.mp3
Lacuna Coil -  Enjoy the Silence.mp3
Edguy - Hymn.mp3
Avantasia - Dancing With Tears In My Eyes.mp3
Yngwie Malmsteen - Gimme, Gimme, Gimme.mp3
Iron Savior - Crazy .mp3
Paradise Lost - Small Town Boy.mp3
Wise Crack - Come Undone.mp3

Heh, AAF could hardly be classified as metal.

Vader - I.F.Y. (I Feel You) (Depeche Mode Cover)
I've always liked this one. It's easy to be put off by the initial vocals, but it gets better.
It's like Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, but instead it's Who Wants Fried Chicken? I do.

A nice song, but quite boring to my taste. The riff is a bit annoying; I guess it should be, like in many Depeche Mode songs.
Also, it sounds a bit like Rammstein, now that I think of it. Both the shredding and the vocal style. Rammstein themselves covered DM's "Stripped".

AAF's cover of Smooth Criminal is cool, but I didn't want to include any Michael Jackson covers. There's probably too many of them anyway.

I don't know about "pop", but Nevermore has done quite a few metal covers of songs that were not originally metal. Most of them are pretty loose with the term cover, though, and mostly just contain the original lyrics. The singer also did two on his solo album.

ex.

The Sound of Silence
Temptation, by The Tea Party
Patterns by Paul Simon
Lucretia My Reflection by Sisters of Mercy

not sure if these count. oh well.

Rammstein?? o_O Possibly because of the cover song. Vader is straight-up death metal otherwise.

Also, I can't believe I forgot about this one (David Bowie cover), since I've been on a Samhain/Misfits kick lately:
Cat People (cover song) - Danzig

I'm ashamed to admit I like this cover of Cameo that Korn did. I like how well their style seemed to fit with the original song. The original was still way cooler, though.
Korn - Word Up

Then there's this, even though I think it kind of sucks:
Coal Chamber - Shock The Monkey
It's like Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, but instead it's Who Wants Fried Chicken? I do.

Avantasia - Lay All Your Love On Me.mp3

You forgot Avantasia's version of Dancing With Tears In My Eyes originally by Ultravox.
It's a really good one.

Did I?

No I didn't!  ;)

Check my post again, you've missed it. It's in there, 6th from end. Truly a great song.

You're getting old, Gecko!

Nice, and there's also a good cover by the German thrash band Kreator

ACK! I must have glanced over it accidentally. Whoops. But yeah, that's a favorite of mine. I really love the original song and its music video. The Avantasia cover actually does it a good amount of justice. Tobias Sammet's voice works well with it. I may be a bit biased though, as Edguy is a favorite band of mine.

Ozzy did stayin' alive? I'll have to give that a listen though it doesn't seem like the best choice for an Ozzy cover.

Black Sabbath - Blue Suede Shoes (Rare)

A little bit old and a cover of a cover but I love this song. Iommi's playing is so sick.

Also I don't know if this counts as "pop" but Acid King does an awesome cover of "39 Lashes" from Jesus Christ Superstar (can't find a good video, unfortunately).
