Title: What's your phobia? (also unofficial Mighty Max thread)
Post by: Lashen on January 22, 2013, 09:28:22 PM
"Do you bear the burden of fear? Perhaps there's a bizarre/unique phobia of yours or someone else's in which you're interested in sharing? Well, my friend, seek no further and share with us."

(https://castlevaniadungeon.net/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages3.wikia.nocookie.net%2F__cb20080807131613%2Fcastlevania%2Fimages%2F7%2F7c%2FParanoia2.gif&hash=b749502baa04515f9e01fc2e8c6eb400)

Theatrics aside: Does fear play a role in your daily routine or life choices? Did you have any strange fears as a child? If so, were they conquered, or did they simply fade away on their own? (I'm curious.)

I'm deathly afraid of forgetting things of even potential significance. So much, in fact, that I often memorize seemingly worthless conversations in their entirety—you'd be surprised what may come back to bite you in the ass when you don't.

When I was but a young vampire killer, the thought of the sun dying out was rather unsettling (a recurring personal query).

Edit:
THIS IS NOW A MIGHTY MAX THREAD

When I was really little, I always got the heeby jeebies from going upstairs out of my basement at night (our basement leads to our back yard). Because when you turn off that light, everything behind you seems to just be enveloped in the deepest black and you swear something has been summoned out from the darkness to get you. So I usually bolted up the stairs as fast as I could. Needless to say I got really good at running up stairs from a young age.

Spiders. There's just something physiologically disturbing about them. I don't know what got me so afraid of them in the first place. When I was young I had no problems with touching webs or handling spiders but no... I can't do it. But at the same time if I were to see a flick that had a woman webbed up and a giant spider came down on her and started mating then I'd feel pretty turned on... :-[ :-[ :-[

Ghosts. I don't fear demons, and if a ghost is really a demon, I wish it'd just tell me so I could go back in that room.... Always thought my parents' house was haunted. Maybe it was built over a grave. I still hear scratching noises in my old bedroom, but nowhere else in the house. And I used to hear someone or something opening the kitchen cupboards at night even though I knew everyone was in their own rooms.

Oh... I have one - doors... Every door of this world must be closed. If at least one door at my house is opened I just can't stop thinking about it. I hate the fact, but I can do nothing if doors are not closed. I can't sleep. So I check-recheck-re recheck them.

I'm afraid of being afraid. Really. I hate the feelings that come with fear so much it frightens & worries me thinking about when I'll be truly afraid again. It's banaynays, I know, but I'm filled with a slightly lesser fear/dread thinking about fear & dread. I've always had anxiety problems though, they've just gotten WAY worse these last 3 years or so, to the point that my hair was falling out in 2011, my blood pressure has risen & anxiety attacks are a 2-3 times a week deal for me. I fainted in 2012 & bruied the life out of my face because I smacked a table on the way down. It's quite a mess & I'm now nervous & generally unsettled talking about it, but c'est la vie.

I was in 5th grade when RE1 came out. I still have nightmares about the opening zombie cinematic, so much I wrote a paper on it as a phobia. Oddly enough, every other RE game (including REmake) and any other zombie game or flick won't make me budge but if you play that opening cinematic my knuckles will still whiten.

For me it was the dog that jumped through the window. And then I stopped playing RE completely after my first encounter with the Hunters or whatever they were called. I did not like hearing a door open and close then get chased through the house!

Me too. It's not as bad as it used to be for me but the mutant-sized ones creep me out.

I've had a bad fear of public speaking for years. It was pretty bad when I was younger, and was one of the main reasons I left college. But I got a promotion at work last year that requires me to speak in front of my crew on a daily basis. I'm still somewhat in disbelief that I can pull it off every day without being a nervous wreck. Woohoo!

Oh, and the last part of this video creeps the ever-loving shit out of me:
The Goddess Bunny (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISBeBuVKXL0#)

Seriously. Not trying to be cruel or anything, either. But I seriously can't watch that.

I'm afraid to be left alone. I want to have people around me and talk with them, that's why when i'm left alone, i'm thinking about death and nothingness. I just can't take it that i'll have to be alone with no one to talk or be by my side.

Used to be afraid of skeletons when I was a kid. The very sight of a skull made me turn away. It was not the physical structure of the skeleton itself that was scary, it's the thought that it was once a human being and now it's all that's left of him or her. Damn that creeped me out.

Today, I am afraid of a sad future. It's not a fear of death or war, it's a fear of living my life in misery or loneliness. It's a philosophical thing I try not to think of.

For me, if they're not furry, they're more frightening than SlenderMan having tea with Hitler in the silent woods at midnight on a moonless night.

The big furry ones, like tarantulas don't bother me really-I find them kind of cute. But no fur? I instinctively yell at muh Nana (or whoever's near me) to grab her heavy shoes & as she says, "smash their bones". I always feel bad though whenever someone kills a spider...or any bug actually. I just think, "Was that really necessary? It wasn't purposefully malicious to you, it had no hate in it's heart for you or anything at all really. It was just trying to live the only way it knew how. For God's sake, YOU'RE the supposed 'higher' being & here you are acting on a primal impulse, letting fear control you. You disgust me, self.". Then a bunch of soul searching philosophical shit happens & I cry in the shower.

I have a complicated relationship with spiders...

This topic has reminded me of a Mighty Max cartoon episode. I only remember certain parts, most of them vaguely save one, but the gist is there was a giant, furry tarantula like spider in the episode that the bad guy was controlling. Some shit went down, Max won of course & they were escaping a collapsing temple or something. On the way out they pass by the spider trapped under some rubble-Max & crew rush past as the spider gives them a look of, "So you're leaving me...I do not wish to die, and am somewhat surprised that one espousing virtue such as yourself would leave me to my fate, but at the same time I expected this. I must accept it with dignity, though I am not at peace...", or at least that's what little Laina got from that glance. I cried...I'm tearing up a little now in fact.

Let me break down my feelings for the spider: it makes me think about when creatures in real life feel like that-fear, terror, being trapped, in immense pain mentally & physically, alone, facing death with no comfort whatsoever. When creatures are in terrible situations like that, when people like Max that are supposed to be heroes, people in positions of power who willingly refuse to try save everyone, or if they're truly not able to & they don't even acknowledge the tragedy of that fact. It was more than upsetting to think the heroes aren't always like Jesus; that they don't always forgive, save & then welcome the bad guy with open arms if he's willing to come over. It made me realize that there is no safety net, nothing is guaranteed & that life isn't sacred to all. It made me realize that there is true, profound, unending darkness in this world. That was horrifying to me at the time...and that's what that spider represented to 8 year old me-horror. That spider was an avatar of horror. *sigh* I need a shower...

This goes deeper & as I've grown, I've began to see some positive sides to this revelation from childhood on how the world works, but I've written a book up there. Honestly, I sometimes believe I could write a thesis paper on this. But this is the CVD & we ain't got time for that crazy mess! This is a place to relax & forget real life for a few moments as we smile & giggle at Gunlord's signature prunyuu~'s, tales & pictures of people's kitties, and MooningFreddy sparking political/philosophical debates. That's right, this place serves an actual helpful purpose-who'da thunk it?

A few Mighty Max spoilers (but still kinda relevant to the topic) while we're on the topic of MM!

(click to show/hide)

I remember that one zombie episode, where they're irrevocably drawn to the hat. In fact, I distinctly remember that Max's father was the hat-bearer until that incident.

I REMEMBER THOSE SPOILER EPISODES. This was after the spider for me, so I was pretty jaded to it all by then, but part of me still thought, "Okay, that's GOTTA be as dark as this show gets."...no, no you tiny little fool, it wasn't. The Monkey King...the Monkey King... *sobs into a pillow*

I feel like we should be in a sort of group therapy session where we help each other to work through the "bad feelings" MM gave us as kids. Like, Robin Williams is there telling us, "It's not your fault. It's not your fault. It's not your fault."

Back on topic-the dark. It fascinates & frightens me.

Mighty Max didn't give me bad feelings. I loved that show. .... I didn't make it very far into it because I never woke up in time or had fucking horseback riding lessons while it was on (parents didn't care that I was too busy watching cartoons for horseback riding lessons).

Now you make me want to watch the series even more. I just loved the show because it had Richard Moll. I was a HUGE (no pun intended) Richard Moll fan as a kid. The only reason I could stand that show Shake, Rattle & Roll.

THIS IS NOW A MIGHTY MAX THREAD

MM had pretty dark stories as the series progressed, it went from typical Saturday "defeat the villain save the day" episodes, to more morbid, dark material, with the apparent death of the main leads & all at the series' climax. Pretty radical for a show aimed at young kids, and what originally started as a toy line. Although I don't think I or anyone here is required to use spoiler tags for a 20-year-old cartoon series  ;D

b-but the series finale was very bizarre i recall, with the whole "i must reset time so none of this ever happened" plot device, thus putting the entire series in a time-loop (i think there just had to be another way of defeating Skullmaster; Max's decision to revert the entire space-time continuum for the sake of victory was a bit drastic, don't ya think? lol but i realize it was an "in-the-moment" decision so he really had no time to think things through, just that it would stop Skullmaster)

and yeah Norman's fear of spiders was pretty cool i thought, cuz here's a guy that's essentially immortal, has been mistaken for various gods throughout the centuries (Thor, etc.), has fought in countless battles & thousands of demons and entities, yet his only single fear in the entire universe is spiders. that's pretty fucking hilarious if you think about it. i may be paraphrasing but i believe he explained it like "i don't know what it is about them. th-they, they just frighten me!"

I remember being drawn to it after hearing the voice of Max for the first time-"OMG, it's Raphael from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!". My kid brain equated a show's level of awesome with the voice actors chosen for it; in this case, it didn't do such a bad job.

As a kid growing up, I was always partial to characters voiced by Cam Clarke (http://www.camclarke.com/voicesamples.html)

Max Sterling from Robotech, Leonardo from TMNT, Kaneda from Akira, Liquid Snake from Metal Gear Solid, etc.

So I can understand the feeling of recognizing a voice and basing something's awesomeness on it. My fear is Cam Clarke being forgotten through time.  :'(

Last time I checked Norman IS those various gods. Well half-gods actually. He was once Hercules in that one episode were he had to fight that man lion in order for the Gods to grant him another 10,000 years of life. And he was Thor in the episode with the Doom Dragon and even said that while he was Thor he fought and defeated the Doom Dragon the first time. Even the Dragon itself recognized Norman as Thor. But I had to like the little reunion speech the two had before they fought again;

Doom D: What do they call you now thunderer?

Norman: They call me..!

*Lightning strikes*

Norman: ..Norman.

I distinctly remember he is able to remember everything, but only when he sees the hat. He goes through his first day back in deja-vu. However, once he reads the note it all comes back to him. He promises that he'll do everything right this time, so this probably avoids the time-loop.

Somewhat poetically, Norman met his end at the maw of our black Labrador, Sable.

I also have this fear of water too. Although not 'water' per se but the idea of going to swim in water or just even encrouching into areas of the deepest parts of water sends this jolt of fear up my spine. The only conclusion that i can draw on for this was my drowning in a past life so this fear is probably cell-memory induced.

I might be too late for the Mighty Max discussion but I want to add in my few cents. I recall the commercials with guys singing some MM theme song. I recall as a kid I got some dragon head island set which was super cool. I also recall a few creepy sets that even as a kid I thought they were kind of creepy. However, they were still cool. I also recall mini versions of the already small sets. I think I also recall I believe some McDonalds happy meal toy having to do with MM. Good times.

I feel you. Let me elaborate on my fear of water a little more.

I refuse to take baths, EVER, for fear that I'll fall trying to stand, bang my head & drown in my own filth water...showers are a little unnerving, but of course they still happen. I get bothered driving by lakes or over bridges. There're some marshlands near where an old acquaintance lived & I couldn't help but be overcome with thoughts of drowning in murky water every time I drove by. I can tolerate pristine, clear pool water for short periods of time & if there are enough people around that I know for a fact are excellent swimmers. I never, ever under any circumstances go past the 3-4 foot mark; partly because I'm crazy, partly because I can't swim. Murky water is my downfall, period.
Title: Re: What's your phobia? (also unofficial Mighty Max thread)
Post by: TheouAegis on February 03, 2013, 01:33:10 PM
I was swimming in a lake over in Eastern Washington. It was murky like all lakes. It even had crawdads. (Ugly little fuckers.) But the crawdads obeyed the swimming zone cordoned areas. However one day I was out swimming. I dove down to the bottom of the lake (in the shallow swimming area) and on my way back to the surface I saw a fish swim under me. It scared the fucking piss out of me. I don't believe in segregation, but fishes need to stay the fuck out of my swimming area!

That said, at Martha Lake near Lynnwood,WA there was always fish. Baby fish. They'd swim up and nibble on your toes if you were quiet enough. They got bigger the further otu you went. I never minded those fish. In fact I used to catch the babies in a cup all the time (and then release them). At some point in my life I developed a fear of fish, though, and even thoguh I like looking at them I can't stand to touch them or be touched by them anymore. So no more fish-catching days.

But no, no. My biggest fear as far as water is concerned is tied:  fear of lake grass (dunno what it's called but I am fucking TERRIFIED of it), and fear of water spanning beyond my visibility. You know what I'm talking about. Not just looking down into the murky depths (oh god that's scary), but also looking straight ahead. Even near the surface of the water, at some point there' no visibility. Anything that swims toward you from beyond that veil of refracted light appears as a dark, obscure shadow and grows bigger as it draws nearer and nearer.

And nearer.

And nearer.

And nearer.

Either way, if you'll excuse me; I have to go surround myself in a blazing curtain of fire now. It's nature's remedy to spider rain don'tchya know.

I used to have fear of dark when i was a kid. I feared that somethig could live inside it, so i kept back for a long time. I even had nightmares with this in my childhood. But now, it seems kinda different. Now i think about it, it seems like i never understood the beauty of the unknown, the wonders...
When i look at the dark now, it seems so beautiful... The night, the full moon, the shades.... Seems wonderful, and mysterious, kinda beautiful to see.... I never attempted to understand how darkness was so beautiful, but now i get it, it's wonderful... And it makes me so happy! :3
Btw, things are a bit different nowadays... I still have some fear of snails, worms, and even maggots. I just hate it! It's so disgusting to me, i just can't live with that. And it's kinda weird, specially when i'm playing some games with enemies like these. I always kill them in games! It seems weird and hard to understand, but what can i say? xD

Somewhere in the world, it's raining spiders right now.

Just finished rewatching season 1 of Mighty Max. All this talk about it. I missed Norman so much. And OMG all the jokes in it make so much more sense now that I'm older. "Your thorough knowledge of the Beowulf saga is proof that our beleaguered educational system is still doing a fine job." When I think about it, I vaguely remember scenes from different episodes, but I can barely remember anything about the show. I remember the Atlantis zombies and Ravendark the most of anything. The rest of the series I pretty much forgot about. One of these days I might have a TMNT marathon with my buddy.

But watching Mighty Max again made me think just how crappy cartoons these days are. The Saturday morning cartoons when we were growing up were so much different than the 4Kids shit out there now. X-Men. Spidermam (fuck yeah Venom and Carnage!). Batman:TAS. Sonic SatAM. Mighty Max. GI Joe. M.A.S.K. Transformers. There were some pretty dystopic non-Japanese cartoons on public TV for kids to watch. And then after school we had political and social satires like Tiny Toon Adventures and Animaniacs. I don't even turn on the TV these days. Even in college I rarely actually watched TV. The only times I could remember watching the clock and trying to tune it at any specific time was for Dragonball GT (raw), Megas XLR, and a couple other Cartoon Network shows that my mind just now blanked out on because my phone dinged at me.

Oh boy I know how it feels to have spiders raining down on you.
When I was young, I did not check that the shower head has a spider's nest. I opened the water, and voila! lots of baby spiders rained down on me! I hated those bugs ever since.

Oh...my...holy...GOD. I would have died then & there. You're like an immortal or something, aren't you? That's the only way one could have survived that sort of an onslaught.

That sounds like a food allergy. Your immune system must be working overtime if this is happening to you. It happens with other food allergies as well, such as peanuts. But if it's not an allergy then maybe you have a selective gag reflex. I hate the gag reflex so I can understand.

I'm assuming there was more to it than that...or you really 'effing love mustard.

Seeing large amounts of ranch dressing does make me gag a little, but I do like to put small amounts at a time in a little saucer for dipping if I'm eating plain potato chips or something.

I don't know if it's a phobia or my anxieties piquing, but ovens scare me...I frightened to reach inside when cooking for fear of being burned no matter how careful I am or fear of dropping whatever I'm cooking due to my weak grip, causing a fire & dying before I can get my pets, irreplaceable sentiment laced items & myself out. Also, I'm simply swarmed by intrusive thoughts of people & animals being burned alive when I look at one...

Oh no no I'm not. I'm also suffering from old bones, muscle pain and a deteriorating eyesight.
Well, I was lucky to have a pail of good clean water beside me. Poured it over myself and cried "Mommy".

I also have a food allergy. Crustaceans! sigh.. and I love to eat them..  :'(

I love shrimp and prawns, but if they ain't dead and skinned -- if they still have those beady little eyes and legs... oh god the legs... yeah, I won't like it. I did eat a shrimp with the legs still attached but... yeah i was unnerved. And crayfish at a cajun restaurant. Oh my god i never order any dish with crayfish cuz of that.

Me too, lol. I'm a friggin bad driver. I'm constantly afraid of that one moment when I lose my focus on the road and crash into someone (or something). That's why I'm almost never calm while driving and never remove my hands from the wheel. Needless to say I never drive beyond the speed limit or speed up to catch a green light. That really annoys some drivers.

ME TOO. My confidence was systematically destroyed by someone close to me & my own crazy brain. I used to LOVE to drive-drove everywhere, loved to drive stick, felt exhilarating. But now it's like Freddy said-second guessing myself, concentrating so hard I get a headache, actually trying so hard to be perfect that I mess up-it's just a nightmare. I feel like I used to be good at it...I miss those days.

I have an awful recurring nightmare where I'll find a deathly toxic spider about an arms length from me and I have a paper towel in my hand to snatch the thing and throw it outside. When I go to grab the spider, that's when it jumps and lands on my back. The rest of the dream is spent with me being a nervous wreck wondering when I'm going to die. I usually wake up from the fear.

Speaking of dreams, I dreamt that I was the new kid at an orphanage last night. Actually first it started out me being at an over-nighter family reunion (we never have those, but I've been having those kinds of dreams a lot lately...) and then next thing I know I'm dropped off at an orphanage, kinda disinterested. One of the kids tries to bully me but I threaten him and he backs off. But rather than trying to be the big guy in the orphanage, I just grab a broom from one of the girls and sweep up the pine needles from an old Christmas tree while she collects them in a dust pan. And to top it all off, I woke up on my own -- no cat licking me or pawing at me or neighbors bumping around or light shining on my face. I just woke up for no reason and had that dream. Seriously, what the fuck? Who the fuck dreams they're an orphan at the age of 32? ... I was pretty pissed off about work last night before bed, though. I tried finishing watching Mighty Max (you fuckers ruined the ending for me!) to get my mind off things, but maybe I didn't and that's what the dream was about. I mean, I always have this air about me at work of "I know more than the rest of you guys, I'm better at this job than any of you (even the boss), but I'd be a fucking retard to want to run this shithole." ... Actually it's not so much an air, I've actually said that to customers, friends and family. But an orphanage? The fuck?!

Okay back on topic, guys. Nothing to see here.

Have you tried to analyze your dream? From the sounds of it, this orphanage you mention could be linked with 'abandonment' or 'feeling abandoned'. Grabbing a broom and cleaning up the pine needles up off the floor could mean you're tidying up your scattered or useless thoughts or even tossing away that which you no-longer need. I find the best way to get over a dream that's pointless or depressing is to analyze it and see what all the symbolism means.

Heights...... being very high up and looking down gives me sense of dread regardless if there is something keeping me safe or not. A ladder too, because I know there is nothing keeping me safe.

I'm fine with planes though. Probably cuz it so high up that my mind does register it like a tall building.

True for most places. However I have heard that Hawaii has almost no spiders besides almost no insects. The islands do have them but the populations of both are so sparse that you may never encounter them. The only place where I saw any insects was at the Hawaiian Zoo on Oahu. That's it. So I guess you really can call Hawaii 'Paradise on Earth'.

From what I learned from psychology class (way back then). Dreams are a manifestation of your subconscious. All of your internal desires, fears, etc are shown in a dream to let the dreamer notice these feelings that are kept bottled up within your subconscious. Sometimes dreams are weird but the important thing is to find those items/symbols in a dream that are of significance and try to relate theses items to the things you worry about, for instance. usually, when you go to sleep with a problem in your head, the fear will appear in the dream and sometimes if you are good at interpretation, the answer to your problem would lie there too.

Seems legit.

Aw sweet, dream interpretation! I dream often that my father is alive again. At first, when I would have the dreams I'd eventually realize that he was dead & then he'd immediately fall apart piece by piece in the dream before I'd wake up. Now I just roll with it & enjoy my dad again, talking about how life's been "since he went away", just hanging out really. For instance, I dreamt we went wedding dress shopping last night. ~*^_^*~ Whuzzat? Oh, no, no-no interpretation needed, guys. I just wanted to share something nice in this nightmare fuel thread.

Well a wedding dress in a dream does not mean marriage. It simply means you are facing some decisions and i suppose your dad is there to help. If you do not like this interpretation, just tell Jorge to delete my post.

lol It's fine, Shiroi. I don't put much stock into this sort of thing anymore, but I was intrigued by it as a teenager; I had a few books on it & the like. I was just talking more or less about it being kind of pleasant to have him back to talk & discuss things. Your interpretation isn't far off at all actually because during the fitting I was feeling very uncomfortable & kept asking him for his input. We discussed many things (that I unfortunately can't remember) & he was always quick to answer, seeming very assured to me. In life, he didn't mince words-what he said was exactly what he darn well meant. He always seemed to know what to say to me too, either to lift me up or reign me in.

Back on topic though-another super neato fact about our favorite non-insect, da spider!

Do spiders have muscles?

Yes. The four pairs of legs are powered by muscles. And, muscles attached to the spider's gut and to the inside wall of the cephalothorax can contract to create a strong sucking action during feeding.

I thought that last part was deserving of some special treatment. Why? Read it again & think about spiders as you do...if you already weren't that is. Nightmare Fuel! Yay!
