Topic: A short conversation between me and my dad as we shop for laptops

So my dad is shopping for a new Laptop. I, being the closest thing to a computer expert he has, have been tapped to advise.

What follows is a real conversation.

Dad: Well, what about this HP?

Me: It's gotten really bad reviews, both professionally and from users. The screen's fragile, there's really bad light bleed, and the failure rate is shockingly high. How about this Dell instead?

Dad: I don't want a Dell.

Me: Okay, how about this Asus?

Dad: I'm not getting an Asus.

Me: How about this Acer?

Dad: I'm not getting an Acer.

Me: I'd ask you about this Lenovo, but I think I already know what you're going to say.

Dad: You're probably right.

Me: Fine. Apple?

Dad: I'd almost get it, but the price is too high.

Me: So... here's a really nice Toshiba that good marks for business user--

Dad: I'm not getting a Toshiba.

Dad: Points for quoting The Republic correctly, but I'm still not getting an asian computer.

Me: THEN HOW ABOUT THE DELL. AMERICAN COMPANY.

Dad: That's a 13 inch screen. I want a 15 inch.

Me: *FACEPALM*

He needs a new personal laptop, though he also uses it for work.

I couldn't slap him, but I went into Recursive Politician mode and trapped him with circular arguments and double speak until he agreed to put the decision of purchase in my hands, as long as it was from Costco. That was his compromise.

I selected an Asus.

It really is the best buy for the money, has decently future proof specs for the next 3 or so years (and even then, it'll still be good to decent even if it's not top of the line anymore), and enough CPU/GPU power and RAM overhead to account for almost any eventuality.

It's also mid-range price.

I'd rather not buy from Costco, but alas. There is only so much influence I can have in this, and I'm genuinely surprised to get him to agree with this.

Jesus, what's his deal?! Doesn't want an asian computer?? Does he not have any knowledge about modern tech? I agree with VladCT on how to properly man-handle him, lol. But personally If I were you I would have asked him this;

"Well if you didn't want my help in the first place then why am I even here? Think McFly, Think!"
