I agree.

And the fact that Hector runs so freaken slow makes those HUGE repetitive areas so much worse.

I always wondered why the hell they did not bother adding some speed increase ability.

All the latest 2D vanias before it had the ability to run faster whether it was through spells or equipment and even LOI had that 1 relic that lets you run faster.

So I hated that they did not put something in the game to make Hector run faster.
I think, as far as "area size" is concerned, LoI got it right more than CoD. The size of the areas never really made you go, "Damn, this is taking FOREVER!". Either CoD should've been downsized from the beginning(and with all the extre room, they could've actually made platforming elements, or, if are keeping all that space, divide every location into TWO locations completely(not just music change, but keeping the same name), with their own bosses. Areas like Cordova Town should've been smaller(the end should've been RIGHT behind the far door in Isaac's boss room), and the Forest of Jigramunt should've been chopped in half, allowing the first half to retain it's name, and feature an arena-like area where you fight a new boss(Chimera, just to toss in a name), and then feature the cave area as it's own locations(rename it to "Cavern Labyrinth", or something). Draculas castle SHOULD'VE been divided into smaller areas with their own individual bosses. Other than Dracula, Death and Isaac, you can squeeze in 3 more bosses into that large ass castle.

Dracula's Castle is the epitome of brilliant 3D level design.

CoD didn't feel slow or too big, I think people just like to rush too much instead of taking in the scenery.     They are too used to the many 1-2 screen/block sized rooms of the 2-D games, but games like CoD are more true to scale with their enviornments, that's why to some people the movement seems slow but it's actually fairly accurate to jogging speeds.

Lastly...we at least got a proper Dracula battle at game's end.

It wouldv'e been a true Dracula fight had the main character been a Belmont. If anything Death should've been the final boss. At least that would be far more acceptable in my mind.

CoD's levels were needlessly long and their length made them repetitive. I agree the levels should have been much shorter. This would've freed up more room on the disc and would allow for much smoother and sharper graphics which in turn, would make the game an even better delight to play. I also think the two coliseum towers were a waste of space too. They did not add anything to the story and are not even necessary or integral to the game overall either. The only real reason I sometimes go back and ply CoD is for the music. The soundtrack was the only real success in that game for me.

LoI had the right idea for it's levels. They were short and made it a breeze to pass through without really feeling bored. But both those games suffered from lack of platforming which only CV64/LoD had been able to provide. While LoS has platforming it just has too much whereas Cv64/LoD had just the right amount.

yeah, LoI couldnt really have handled proper platforming... I mean, the little it had was pretty frustrating. particularly the whip jumping.
Laura and Gabriel arrive in the deepest cave of the castle and... they find IGA.

Except the controls make the platforming on N64 a chore. God, they're fucking awful, slow games in that regard (also, combat).

On my first playthrough of CoD I made every weapon and Innocent Devil. If that's rushing it, then... Uh... What am I doing wrong?

We take in the scenery of the game. The first 20 seconds we're going through each area. Because the areas look exactly the same almost everywhere you go.

I was excited when I saw a fountain in Cordova Town, and then severely disappointed when I found out you couldn't even get near the thing.

LOL! Somebody else here said that same thing. Can't remember who it was but I agree. The fountain was the only real eye candy in that whole god-forsaken town that was just waaaay too big. Now if only it had running water and gold trim... Maybe a marble statuette on top too...

This is the whole reason I don't want the LoI/CoD team tackling another 3DVania.  They just don't understand how to construct a proper 3D space for the player to interact with.  EVERYTHING was just a flat stage for combat to take place in....and there was rarely any seamless transition from one area to the next.  Reminded me of the random battle stages you used to see in JRPG's.

LoD had its technical failings (graphics, controls), but at least that team had a really good grasp of how to build a proper 3D environment that the characters could interact with and progress through.  LoS did a great job with its environments as well for the most part...very well conceived and beautiful, but they did use invisible walls a bit too much as well.

But wasn't LoS mostly flat for its battles too? I can't actually recall much times when the terrain mattered in combat. No different levels of heights, no tight corridors where weapons could clash, environments that would deliberately change how you could approach an enemy, etc. They just covered the flatness up better than LoI and CoD, but for the most part, they were all very flat environments. Sure they had slopes and the places didn't seem square, but that detail was superficial and didn't change combat.

Of course, it did have like one or two instances, like the sword masters and the pools of water, but it was as rare if rarer than platforming in LoI.

Not that I really want to defend Despair, but Adventure ReBirth re-used actual GBA sprites from AoS. I actually don't recall seeing reused GBA sprites in Despair, though I only tried the demo.

Peeping Eye was taken from AoS for HD. I didn't notice any GBA reuse for ReBirth, but I did notice some backgrounds were taken from Chronicles.
