Title: N64 Castlevania
Post by: Gimph on June 28, 2008, 04:05:15 PM
I love both Castlevania N64 titles, but I've heard there are a lot of mixed feelings about them. Don't be pressured by other people who don't like them. I want your honest opinion!

i prefer lod, due to its more streamlined, expanded and fixed level design and tighter controls, as well as more content.

i hate the key fetching quests original n64 cv was polluted with.

I think they have some really good ideas that are just executed poorly in the end.

So I kinda half-love them and kinda half-hate them.

LoD > CV64

I like LoD. It's fun, excactly what youd'd get if you put Castlevania directly into 3D graphics and had somewhat decent charaters. I only wish it had voice acting throughout and not just for the prologue. Tough it tends to get boring and that final form of Dracula was beyond unfair.

cvfan tries to pretend he's a wacko to be cool

btw. all the complaining about the 64 games having crappy control are about the first game. its cameras were worse, and less controllable.

also the first game has no pirate ship and no henry, so it loses compared to lod by default. :o

Henry sucks, incase you haven't noticed! Not only is he a whiny brat in comparison to Malus, but I can't stand using him when he's older because I was being timed the whole time! I had to do that 3 times because my memory card got corrupted over and over again! I unlocked all the characters, costumes, and hard mode, so I'm content with that.

No! No! Carrie is supposed to marry Malus, and Rosa SHOULD be kissing Reinhart!
but not at the same time. maybe in alternate realities. reinhardt has to kill malus for rosa to resurrect :o

and malus is a soma prototype, he is dracula, not possessed by him, so the endings cancel each other.
Title: Re: N64 Castlevania
Post by: Gimph on June 29, 2008, 10:42:51 AM
Yes, I know. Reinhart and Carrie don't have anything to do with each other, so it's not like both stories happen, only one can happen and it's separate from the other completely. Cornell, on the other hand, does tie into the plotline. He sealed Dracula 8 years before Carrie or Reinhart did, and his wolf form sacrificing itself is the reason Dracula was able to be ressurected for Carrie and Reinhart's stories. Way to go, Cornell, you're so stupid...

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT!?

Henry's one of the best characters in the entire CV series! He's so fun to play because his controls are solid and any part that isn't is balanced by his ranged weapon.

His quest is too short, but at least it's not overbearingly long like Cornell's quest.

I think that's why I cosider Cv64 plays better somehow: Cornell's quest grows tiresome, and you can't play Carrie's or Reinhardt's quests until you finish Cornell's.

I know that's partly because the chronology of the story plots, but I really don't like being forced to play Cornell's whole game first. He's easily the lamest of all 4 of the characters.

I voted the only correct answer, which is that they're awesome. Far better than the putrid shit Igarashi cranked out on PS2, and they're also the only post-SOTN Castlevania games worth a damn (unless you count the repackagings of X68000 and Rondo, which I don't).

The 64 games are easily my favorite Castlevania games. They have a very immersive quality to them that I love, some of it because of the ability to be able to look thru the character's eyes via the C-Up first person button. There's so much to look at and it's beautiful!

The character graphics aren't the best in the world, but they definitely do the trick.

I'd have to say though, that I like the level designs in CV64 better than in LoD. There's just a bit more meat to them in the first game and levels like the Towers of Sorcery and Execution just play so much better.

But overall, both are fantastic games and really don't deserve the bad rap they get. I think a lot of it has to do with some of the internet community's inability to accept a CV game taht ISN'T SoTN.  ::)

Yup totally agree. With CV64, the levels felt just about the right length, but with CODLOD it's like they were adding more rooms on just because (read: to make the game longer).

Really? I prefer the level designs in Legacy of Darkness actually. I really wish they could've added more levels in the game though to make it longer. It's way too short. Cornell's story is almost at a good length, Carrie and Reinhart's are way too short, and Henry's is even shorter. So short, it's terrible actually. I actually just beat Henry's story again and found it was much more enjoyable than I remembered. Weird. Still, it's just avery short game.

Well, Cornell IS the main quest. The other's are to be considered side characters, but they are some of the best second quests in the series.

Play CV64 and Carrie and Reinhardt are the focus. And they're cooler than Cornell anyway. CV64 is a more focused and traditional version of the game.

I don't find Cornell's quest short at all. There's too many levels where there's virtually no enemies to play with; especially near the end of the game; which to me seems to be the opposite of what should be (as you get closer to the source of the evil).

I like that the other character quests have meaning.  It's not like Richiter Mode (SotN, PoR) or Maxim Mode (HoD) or Pumpkin Mode (LoI) or Joachim Mode (LoI) or Trevor Mode (CoD), in that yeah it's another character but there's no reason for you to be questing as them.

They somewhat fixed that in DoS with Julius Mode, which is a 'whatif' scenario, and in PoR with Sisters Mode, which is a prequel scenario.

Totally disagree, graphis are really good for a standard N64 title and the control is not bad.

I personally LOVE the N64 CastleVanias, they have different styles so i think there's no possible comparision.

I mean, the first CastleVania64 is shorter, more bloody and more... blaspheme(it makes me think on Lovecraft), also the level design does more sense than LoD's ones.

Legacy is darker, less bloody an has a lot of "blue" in his colors, his atmosphere is more depressing, everything is in ruins (just look the execution tower), the game has more traps and platforming (the Clock tower is lovely)

Those two games are more CastleVania-ish than any IGA game could be ever.

Yeah, the N64 ones, though I prefer Legacy of Darkness, are amazing. I think if Iga was to design a new 3D console game off of those, it could be a potential masterpiece. I think the game is too short though. Cornell's story is a good length, but I can finish Carrie and Reinhart's stories in one day. It always leaves me wanting more. That's my only problem with it, but it's still my favorite!

By the way, welcome to the forums!

if there's one thing i don't like about those games, it's the script. some of the lines the characters, especially villains deliver are so ridiculously cheesy and retarded i cringe when they appear on screen.

It kinda gave it that cheesy horror movie feel, though. And I think that's what the team basically set out to do. There's those sorts of influences throughout the whole game:

- brooding, moody soundtrack, with its many uses of the "SHOCK!" strings-slap

- over the top enemy design

- scenarios like the garden maze chase and the mad scientist's explosive brew. The execution and duel towers are totally cheesy as well.

It's pretty damn clear the KCEK team is a big fan of the B-Horror movement, and it's largely what give CV64s their charm.

the 64 ones are pretty good, I just wish they had implemented the camera better, it's hard for me to see what I'm doin' half the time. (though I can fix that now with Legacy but I haven't tried it yet with the dpad thing)

Even with the D-Pad thing, it's hard to tell when and when not to use lock-on for enemies.

I've seemed to notice that you actually have much better accuracy and flexibilty if you just leave "Action" mode on and kinda run toward your enemy as you attack.

Except with Reinhardt, cuz he needs to target. Also Henry.

Dispite some stupid lines, the game had a good storyline, and unlike most Castlevanias, some parts were actually very emotional, whether it was sadness, like Rosa's story, as well as Actrise's story of killing her child, or freaky like Carrie/reinhart's encounter with the "villager" in the villa.

it doesn't feel too epic or deep, but it's a decent story all right.

also btw. actrise's actually one of the least annoying villains in the game. she doesn't sound like a fat woman/santa claus when she laughs like dracula does for example (ohohoho etc).

64 is the better of the two, with Legacy's additions, other than save points in Duel Tower, being rather uniformly terrible. Hi-res mode is barely playable, and the game's full of horribly balanced abilities, like throwing multiple subweapons at once, or giving one character a hitscan, infinite range gun with a skippable reload animation.

The new levels are a mixed bag, but it's a mixed bag of different kinds of awful. Foggy Lake is dull, the new Forest of Silence lacks the sense of scale the old one had, and Cornell's quest redefines the concept of 'filler;' whether it's being forced to climb one of the towers in Castle Wall twice, or the unbearably boring run through Villa's garden maze backwards with no music and nothing chasing you [or the unbearably boring escort mission that follows] the majority is just focused on time-wasting and padding. Art Tower is the worst since the padding is spent listening to ticking sounds on the pause menu or falling off an impossibly narrow rope, but all the re-imagined levels are pretty poor: Tower of Sorcery has lost most of its graphical detail [the sparkles in the background and floating bubbles are AWOL], Science goes from hilariously difficult to hilariously easy, and so on. The game closes on two cheap, stupid bossfights, the last being particularly heinous in that regard.

Henry is worse, especially as a replacement for Coller. He's Reinhardt's character model with what appears to be an axe armour's head thrown on the top, given a ludicrously prefunctory quest that really adds nothing to the storyline and no enemies designed to take his unique abilities into account.

Um...Cornell's Castle Wall is a key / item quest [the lever], Villa's all about the keys for him [seven of the damn things, with two crest halves the game doesn't even bother to tell you about], Art Tower's first half is finding two switches, Ruins' first area is an LoI-style level where you have to find three switches in a bunch of copy-paste rooms and then in the second you have to find two more, Science still has a key, Clock Tower has five keys instead of three...

wasn't talking about cornell's but the other two who were also in n64 one.

I wasn't aware much had changed in the CV64 > LoD transition for Carrie and Reinhardt. Certainly they all have to do the much, much longer Clock Tower [the level's about three times longer in Legacy, you can beat it in five minutes in 64]. Still, Duel Tower with save points is an improvement, I won't dispute that.

Quote
also i meant the forest. n64 version's way more annoying.

Well yes, but that's more related to that diagonal jump with a gap in the wall platform sequences. LoD and 64 both have sidetracking for levers, though I guess if you count the LoD shortcut it's a much more bearable level.

Quote
and it fails for not having pirate ship. ;D

I always thought of it as more ship of the dead than pirate ship, though I'd agree more games should have a ship that fills with water to waist height, stops, and the explodes as soon as you get outside it.

In Legacy of Darkness, Carrie's projectiles are less accurate. In 64, even if you're not facing your enemy, your spell will still make contact. It just turns around and attacks the thing behind you. In Legacy of Darkness, it won't turn; it goes straight ahead, and you miss. I hate it. Reinhart, I haven't noticed any differences.

I like the Legacy of Darkness Forest of Silence a lot better than the one in Castlevania 64, because it gets really repetitive and annoying in 64. It's just platform, switch, enemies, gate, platform, switch, enemies, gate, etc.

And yes, the pirate ship (as I refer to it) makes the game more fun for some reason. I just love that level. Then, of course, the serpent boss in hard mode is one of the hardest bosses in the game.
