Title: Something I don't understand in SotN
Post by: darkwzrd4 on June 30, 2008, 12:09:40 AM
Did any of you ever notice that there is an empty room in the catacombs of SotN?  It is near the boss.  From the save point next to the room where the walk armor is found, go one room to the left, then go to the room on the lower left.  That is the room.  There is only a lone lantern in that room, yet it seems like that there should be something more in that room.  It's the same in both the original version and in the remastered version that is apart of the DXC.  What is the point of this room?  Does anyone know?

It is there to drive you mad.  :D

Stay far away from that room.

There are plenty of useless empty rooms in Castlevania. Does anyone know what to do in Harmony of Dissonance in the rooms with random junk written in the bottom right hand corner? One has "?????", another says "13579" another has a picture of a small rectangular object...?

I didn't want a smiley face! I wanted 3 "?" symbols!

There's actually a few instances of weird empty rooms in the game:

There's the drop from the staircase near the save point in the Marble Gallery when coming from the Alchemist Lab. Before you get to the stain glass windows and marionettes, there's a lone break in the stairs that has a little cubby niche underneath. It totally looks different than any other screen layout.

There's another empty stairwell right before the Sword Poltergeist (after the Skelerangs), when entering Olrox's Quarters from the Clockroom.

I think there's one in the Underground Waterway, too.

I think these strange instances are just to mix up the layout a little bit. It oculd possibly have to do with loading, but I doubt it.

Those letters/numbers/symbols are clues on what you need to have, or do to get the merchant to appear in that spot. Different spots will change what he carries in inventory. Deciphering what the symbols mean is the fun part.

The 579 at the end of that number is a play on Konami in Japanese, it's also in Gradius as the default high score for Gradius 2 is 57300 as well as in a few other Konami games.

Yup, not to mention it comes off as kinda silly, despite the visual effect of the "key" pressing down looks neat.

Just -- why the hell is there a gigantic piano in the floor in the middle of a castle?

Well.. I guess for the same reason there is the gigantic chandeliers in both Super CV IV and DOS.

But still, it looks very weird.

Can you imagine the Architect.

Dracula Coming up to this person: So can you put a Giant Piano on the floor

Architect:........what??? Why????

Dracula: For something new I guess

Architect (Under his breath): oh like the countless coliseums, chapels, spiked rooms (Iam not even going to say how many guys I lost on that one), libraries, and other assorted insane creations were not NEW!!!!!.

Dracula: hmm what was that?

Architect:.....oh nothing.

Well, we know Dracula plays violin. Why not piano? Besides, he needs a BIG piano, if he plays in his Dracula Ultimate form! ;D

At the Saturn version of the game, at that room it used to be an item, that it was used to make the green fairy sing more often, but at the psx version, it was left empty, like the unfinished underground gardens!!

Well the one in the underground waterway leads to the Cursed Prison in NitM, which I believe is the Japanese version of the game.  I heard that the Cursed Prison and Underground Gardens were left out of the US version because the US branch of Konami ran out of time before the release or something like that.  You know that weird section of the floor of the entrance in the first room of the game.  That is where the Underground Gardens are in NitM.

As for the room with the "Phantom Sword" in Orlox's Quarters, if you are talking about the lower right area under the stairs, that is actually a false wall that will crumble if you attack.  That hidden room hold three trophies containing a broadsword, cheese, and an onyx.  The place under the stairs in the Marble Gallery is still a mystery to me.  I don't think that there is anything there in any of the versions and I think that it give the area a sense of being incomplete even though it is complete.

It's for the better: the Underground Gardens and Cursed Prison served little but to add confusing and conflicting extra side areas. Cursed Prisoon actually helps bridge Marble Gallery and Underground Waterway, though. But as an area itself it just feels entirely out of place.

No I mean the room right below the large one with the Phantom Sword.

Off-topic question, sorry. In Aria of Sorrow, where do you get the final sword? I'm debating on whether to fight alastors or final guards to get it. It's the only decent weapon I have yet to collect, then my account is complete! :)

I like how in PoR the areas are just Point A to Point B but sometimes there's like 1 optional room you can go in that has nothing in it. At least SotN's weird rooms felt kinda mysterious and stuff.

i don't think the psx team had any plans to make an area there, especially something so poor as the saturn garden.

I kinda like it.

CV games always have useless empty rooms. Who says every room has to matter? Sometimes it's just architecturally cool. Like the room with the wine in the Castle Entrance of HoD.

Yeah that one was tight,  hey speaking of rooms when you get all the items to put in that one room to furnish it does anybody know if anything happens? I haven't noticed anything but I may have just missed it or am missing an item or 2.

I heard the endings are different when you get all the pieces, but I can't confirm this as I gave up on HoD once i had to start messing around switching between 2 castles

I've gotten all the furniture pieces and I've never noticed anything different. It's probably just there to give you something to collect

if you collect all pieces and put them away into the room, the best ending will slightly change.

juste will walk one step closer to lydie who will cling to his arm.

i should post that in the did you know topic, it's my discovery. :o

I think most of us knew this, it wasn't very hard to find all the furniture. Actually, I didn't know the normal ending didn't involve her clinging to his arm.

Ditto. Cause that's the ending I got; bad animation in tow.

no i meant most people might have known of the clinging, but not that it changes because of the furniture collection.

i see people asking all the time about what's it for, and nobody ever knows.
