Title: Super Smash Bros - Brawl Vs. Melee
Post by: Gimph on July 03, 2008, 02:44:33 PM
When I first got my Gamecube, Smash Bros Melee was the first game I played for it, and it was amazing. A few years later, I heard some great news - Brawl. Nintendo claimed it was one of the best Nintendo games ever, but I was really disappointed. Infact, I'm already sick of it, and I'm back to playing Melee. A lot of people apparently really liked Brawl, and I was just curious. Which do you like? :-\

what's wrong with Melee that you don't like ?

Yeah seriously.  Melee was just goodness through and through.

As for Brawl, it's got a lot of good things going for it, but there are a lot of issues with it that bring down its value as a polished, finished product.  Here's the stuff I've noticed (both good and bad) about the game:

The Good:
-The Adventure Mode is very fleshed out, and even has multiplayer features to it.
-The Events in it are improved, and they've got more of 'em.
-The return of the classic character entrances (originally done in the N64 Smash).
-Lots and lots of music, many of it unlockable, from different composers.
-The challenges make you keep playing the game.
-Boss Rush mode
-Many new stages
-More Trophies and the addition of Stickers.
-Air dodging is improved, and can be done multiple times.
-Some tweaks done to characters to balance the game
-It kept most of the characters from Melee.

The Bad:
-While we did get a new Adventure Mode, it feels like such a chore to play it sometimes... I guess putting stickers on your trophy makes some things easier but that's another chore.

-The addition of so much content and so much detail to stages has, unfortunately, increased the Load Time.  There's nothing more annoying than wanting to go play a new match (this is OFFline) only to have to wait 10-15 seconds for the damn thing to load.

-While they brought back the classic Character Entrances, they did away with the Bonus Awards (Frequent Faller, Face Smasher, Offensive Master, etc.), so you don't get the awards at the end of battle anymore, not even in Adventure Mode.

-While challenges do make you continue the game, some challenges are never meant to be unlocked (or at elast not for quite some time) unless you use a Wrecking Hammer on them (Collect all stickers!?  Are you serious?!  I never got all the trophies in Melee!)

-Yes, we got lots of music... but some of the compositions are just exact ports of the originals (I'm looking at you, Majora's Mask Overworld Music), and some of the new arrangements... well, they're OK.  I suppose I'm just being picky 'cuz I wanted a better version of The Dark World, heh.

-Yes, we got new stages, but many of them are ridiculous.  We hated Infinite Glacier - Icicle Mountain in Melee... what made the developers think we'd enjoy Rumble Falls?  And 75M?  Are you serious?  Only Pit can play in that stage.  Some other stages look wonderful but are not very playable (Skyworld) while others are downright frustrating and wrong (I'll take Melee Flat Zone over the runaway train that is Flat Zone 2).  The bigger stages suffered as well.  Did they think NewPork City would be fun?  Hyrule Temple is still king of GOOD big stages, NewPork is annoying.  Too bad too, 'cuz I love the music.

-You couldn't use tracks from your own card like in ExciteTruck.  I was hoping to play some CV music.

-Where's Simon Belmont? (PERSONAL PET PEEVE)

-Stage Builder only has generic parts, so all your stages, even if very well crafted and cleverly built, still resemble a "Break the Targets" stage.

-Where the hell is "Board the Platforms?"  And "Race to the Finish"?  It's not ALL about the Break the Targets, folks.

-What made them think that HomeRun Contest would be fun online?  You only played it in Melee for unlockables.

-Why can't one use custom stages online?  Well I know that one; it'd probably increase the loading since they gotta send the stage config over the 'net...  ok, scratch out this last one.

-Ike broke online play.  Also, while they balanced out some characters, they completely nerfed others.  There's absolutely NO reason to play as Samus anymore (ZSSamus is superior in pretty much every way).  There's no reason to play as Jigglypuff.

----

On another note, have you guys noticed that Brawl seems to harken more to the first N64 Smash, instead of Melee?  The menus, the layout, the Classic Mode's 'character path' all resemble N64 and less Melee.

Perhaps the next Smash game will resemble Melee more.

I still love the game, and play it whenever I have the chance, but yeah... feels like it was overhyped.  Maybe they should've just kept the whole thing secret instead of revealing pretty much everything via smashbros.com

Both of them were suckish rippoffs of the original. The original= good. All sequels= bad.

wait, all fighting sequels are like that though,  unless they use different characters and fighting mechanics and melee was amazing it took what we got a s a basic foundation for n64 and really opened up what this type of game could do. All the graphics and new characters also really make this game shine.

The only thing wrong with brawl is how over powered defensive play is. It's frustrating to close in on a wolf or pit while they are spamming B...and ill leave it at that. Aside from that, i love brawl....its biggest value in my eyes: DeDeDe and the new and improved Zelda.

Also, lack of Mew-Two makes me sad....i was getting pretty good with him in melee.

What!?, no way. He's not a hidden character in this one? That's just wrong man, he kicks ass.

I have to disagree. I absolutely love Melee. I think it's perfect. It also made a massive impact for me because it was the very first Gamecube game I had ever played after years of N64 graphics and gameplay. Although, the N64 is still my favorite system of all time, as it has Castlevania 64 and Legacy of Darkness, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Super Mario 64, Donkey Kong 64, Kirby 64, Yoshi Story, and Smash Bros. Those are some of my favorite games. Infact, those ARE my favorite games.

If you don't like fighting games I seriously doubt you'll like Judgement.

Lucario is a pretty close match to Mewtwo though....He seems to be a clone with a slightly different style

Nah, Soul Caliber is cool, and this looks to be similar, plus it's CV, so I can possibly hate it.

The difference is - Lucario is a new Pokemon, thus, he sucks. The originals were cool, then they add those things and...ugh :P

I love Brawl alot better than Melee. Alot of the characters are easier to handle in Brawl since the overall game is slowed. IMO, I think Brawl is alot like the original but thats just me.

I never said I hated new things. I only said I hated new Pokemon because they suck and make a total mockery of the original Pokemon I based 95% of my early childhood on. Those were awesome, I even still play the same Pokemon Red Version I played when I was about 3 years old. The new legendary Pokemon look absolutely ridiculous in particular.

They screwed up the show too! I mean, Misty's gone off somewhere, Ash is an idiot, got a new hat, and a new voice (probably because the original guy died, but still...) and those...THINGS that travel with him?! Who the heck are they?!

Er-sorry, back to the topic...

Let me get you some Wah-mburger's and some French-Cries.

Anywho, I like Brawl better. I really feel they took everything Melee did and kicked it up a notch. More chharacters, better levels with some good old ones, awesome single player, and of course, assist tropies. You can't beat that...

They really changed the physics from Melee to Brawl. If you play Brawl, then play Melee, you notice that Melee is way faster and enemies go flying more easily. I prefer that. That's just my opinion.

Wah-mburgers and French-cries? You're original... ::)

I agree: the first 151 Poke'mon was the shining achievement of the series, and sans a few cute newcomers like Togepi, Wobbafett and Munchlax, the design just went downhill from there.

That said, I don't think Lucario is anywhere as cool a Mewtwo.

But that's not enough to ruin Brawl for me. I may not be as die hard a fan of the Smash series as some of you guys, but I can tell that many lofty updates were made to what Melee already shined with (which I'll say was indeed one of GC's best titles). All I see is more, and with a game with such a

Yuuuup  ;D

It's what Snorlax starts out as. When Munchlax eats enough food (usually scrounging it from park trash cans), he grows fat and lazy and turns into Snorlax, for a nice long, deserved sleep after a hard day's work.

McDonalds is disgusting! If someone offered you free food and it was poisonous, would you eat it?

Well they use to be better tho. Also I like the McNuggets with sweet'n'sour.

But.... that's about all I like at McDonalds.
And GAWD their commercials are obnoxious and ass.
