Great, now a disc officially has more GB than my own computer hard drive.  Still, this is pretty good for the face of gaming: This will be a major boost for the PS3...now to just get rid of those friggin' install times...

From the article:
"For reference, that disc could hold roughly eight copies of Metal Gear Solid 4, 187 copies of Final Fantasy VII, or 1.25 million copies of the original Super Mario Bros."

The new discs require a special "wide-range spherical aberration compensator and light-receiving element" to detect the weaker laser signal, so don't plan on sticking one of these data-bloated monstrosities into your existing PS3

Awwww fuck, those look so cool, and I was just gonna pick up a PS3 but if I have to get stuck with the "old" last year disks I don't know if I want one. Those things'll actually make gaming really addicting and superfun again like the 80's/early 90's looping games did with crazy long gametimes. With 400g's of space there's so much they could do and just about no limit to what they'll be able to imagine.

So when's the PS3-2 that'll be playing these suckers coming out?

Actually any regular blu-ray player can play these disks as well.  A ps3 could handle them no problem.  Or atleast I read that at another source.  I'll link to it later.

Gah! Optical media is SLOW as in SLOOOOOOWPOKE SLOW. Can you imagine how long it would take recording/reading data off that junk?!? We need to stop making optical media already. Flash-based storage is where the money is at, like those 60GB SSD (Solid State Drives) IBM and others are making.

Yeah, this isn't likely to rock anyone's world.  I'm hedging my bets that Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo are all examining digital distribution and internal storage options.  Playstation Network, Xbox Live Arcade, and Wiiware are all piloting a new kind of business model.

Imagine you want Super Mario Universe for your Wii 2 --Why go to the store and buy it on this next gen blue ray when you can point, click and download (all for a fee of course)  It would cut Nintendo's production cost, eliminate shipping and middleman markups --and it would also eliminate unneeded travel on our part.  Game prices ultimately drop; Game Develpoers loose no profits; everyone's happy.

 :)

blazing a trailAnd it will go beyond gaming too....

I have an answer to that, and that is telcos. They are a bitch when it comes to bandwidth, so they'll cap anybody down and throttle their connection if they are not being "profitable" costumers. Unfortunately, in the USA, ISPs don't have common carrier status, which means they can fuck up the traffic on their network however they damn please, and with the new bill they just passed in congress, it gives immunity to spy on people "if the president said do it."

/me goes away ranting

Download distribution as the leading option is a looooong way away. Think about it: most people don't have connections higher than DSL. A couple gigs would take about a day to download, and even on cable a good number of hours. Plus, if your hardware crashes, where's your backup?

That said, I'm all for Flash-based storage devices. I'd love to play a game or watch a high-def movie on something like that. Small, easy, fast...

I agree flash is the shizzle.

Downloadable media would be awesome, but I have to agree with Abnormal Freak that most people just don't have good enough internet connections for this to be effective. For now, we'll just have to make do with monster discs like this 16-layer one.

But I have a question: what the heck would game developers do with that massive amount of space? I mean, you could get better graphics for one thing, but you couldn't just make longer games. The potential game-time you could have would probably be too long to keep people's interest intact. Yet games which don't end up being that long would end up wasting all that space.

Also, let's not forget that developers will require very, very long development times to make these games, so good games will be released farther and farther between.

Secret for a REALLY, REALLY long game?

Plain old SOTN graphics, normal compression, and that 400GB thingie.

While most people doesn't have high speed internet that's not to say that there won't be satelite capabilities built within the technologies of the future consoles down the road that doesn't require internet, they log onto a satelite and download a game distributed. But that's a farfetched option as that would cost way more than just shipping to stores.

Meh, I don't want longer games, I want better games. FFVII is too long as it is.

I second that. I'm ok with shorter games that are more fun and replayable.
