Okay, after hearing all the terrible things people had to say about The Castlevania Adventure, I decided to try it out for myself. I just got the game this morning, and I absolutely love it. I just can't understand how anyone could hate this game. Sure, the graphics could be better, but it's the ORIGINAL Gameboy! It's not like this is a DS game, so graphics-wise, perfection shouldn't be expected. So why do people hate it so much?

It's too difficult.
-
Well, i've played and completed both CastleVania Adventure, I and II and all i can say is that the First CastleVania Adventure could bet really better if tha game wasn't a slowdown by itself.
Seriously, when i played it first time and seen that the game has more speed when there's no enemies i was VERY dissapointed.
Also, after playing CastleVania I, II and III i found the soundtrack a bit slow and some tracks generic and uninspired.

That's a matter of opinion. I personally think that the first Castlevania title was much harder than this. I've beaten the first two levels (out of four) and have yet to run into any obstacles that were "too difficult."

I know that Christopher moves like a tank, and I'm well aware it can get annoying at times considering everything else moves at normal speed. Still, I think gameplay is excellent to be honest.
Also, the soundtrack wasn't bad at all. Infact I like it (with the exception of the backround theme for stage two) and thought it was pretty good, especially considering it's for the original Gameboy. It's not bad at all.

You need to get Belmont's Revenge to see how good a gb castlevania can be. I love Adventure, but Belmont's Revenge is way better.
-
Yeah Revenge of the Belmondo clan has a much better overall flow to it.
-
I know Belmont's Revenge is better, but I wanted to get the first Adventure before that.
At any rate, for a game considered to be the worst Castlevania title of all time, and simply terrible and unplayable, I'd say it's a pretty good game! ;D
-
Yeah Belmonts Revenge is hands down the best of the 3 gb games.

How is it so much better?

For one thing, Belmont's Revenge isn't broken and cheap. Adventure is slow, dull, uninspired, and worst of all, boring. The only people who can actually like that game are probably fans of the series.

Boring? Aww, I love it!
Anyway, you're probably right. The only reason I actually like this game is because I love the Castlevania series. Come to think of it, if it was a game separate from the Castlevania franchise, I would probably hate it! ;D
-
I don't hate Adventure myself, bought a mint copy awhile back from a friend of mine, honored to own it now.
The hate likely stems from the fact that the game is uch slower paced than the NES games, and it's sequel Belmont's Revenge, not to mention that the game is difficult. But hey that's how many games were back in the days, many were hard because the controls were crippled, others because of respawning enemies, this one is hard because of stage design and like it's sequel getting hit makes the whip regress.
Those who hate, do not appreciate. ;D

Yeah, I can understand disliking the limited movement, but difficulty? The game is no harder than the NES games.

The only thing that bothered me was the whip-downgrades. I found it nearly impossible to retain a fully upgraded whip on level 4.
Despite that, I find it to be a fair game. The music is top-notch, and the boss battles are pretty good, too.
lol @ reneging your opinion because others didn't agree with you. The mob-mentality here is hilarious.
-
Wait...people hate Adventure??! I love it! It's slow and clunky but it's a challenge. I think I like Belmont's Revenge a bit more, but it's still a good game
-
CV Adventure is great. Compared to other titles of its time, it's actually very well done. I never had a problem with slowdown or overall game speed. And whoever bashed the soundtrack doesn't know what they're talking about.

CastleVania Legends

Castlevania Adventure might be slower than Belmont's Revenge, but still is a great game. The slow speed and stiff controls, they didn't bother me at all. The soundtrack is awesome, especially at stage 3 and 4 are my most favorite tracks. Now about the difficulty, it is not so hard. I'll just say fair. If you finish the game once, you can star it from the begining, having the enemies deal you more damage. If you finish the game five times, at the sixth play, every enemy can kill you with one hit. One hit and you are dead!! Even so, i did manage to finish the game and then i just got bored, because i thought that if i finish it at that difficulty, i could get something new or another ending, but nothing at all. You could play the game from the star with the same difficulty, but still it was fun trying to finish the game while you were one hit to get killed!! My only problem with this game was that it was very short. 4 stages waren't to much.
-
Stage...three...spikes...gasp! :P
Oh goodness, this is hard. Just when I thought I was getting close to done with this game, they throw in stage three's crazy spike rooms! Then, once I finished the rope climbing one, the WALL attacks me?! These people don't give up, do they? ;D
-
Honestly, the game really sucks, the hero moves like a turtle. I just like its music, Battle of the Holy and Theme from Legend of Dracula are great.

Cool, I've never heard. Is there any video of it? I'm curious. :o

It's actually not much worse than Simon from the original. The game has some flaws in it, I know that. Still, it's a fun game, and I'm happy I got it.
-
Yeah! I beat stage three! Now, to kill Dracula! ;D
-
I take it back. Dracula hurts. Ouch. Does anyone have any tips of how to beat him? His first form isn't TOO hard, but his second is just painful... :'(

Do a barrel roll!

Christopher couldn't manage a barrel roll if his life depended on it, but I win anyway.
I WIN! I BEAT THE GAME! HAHAHAHAHA! YEAH! IN YOUR FACE, YOU DAMN BAT! HA! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
I just beat this game last night, and I have to say, the experience was definately castlevania-worthy but the game itself just isn't that good. All of the criticisms about this game are 100% valid.
Since you liked this game then you'll love Belmont's Revenge. It fixes all of the issues in Adventure & it's just funner to play.

That's weird. I absolutely love it. I beat it at least eight times yesterday, and so far, five times today. It's so much fun. An awesome soundtrack, fun gameplay, very unique and enjoyable levels. I'm addicted! ;D

So how come you're not playing Belmont's Revenge??
-
In Reply To #29
Well, at least you're having a good time with it, and in the end, that's what actually matters.

Unfortunately, I don't have it. :-\
I'll have to order it off Ebay some time...
-
Hahaha! I just beat stage twelve. That's farther than I've ever gotten.
-
Excuse the triple post, but I JUST BEAT THE LAST DIFFICULTY SETTING! Hahahahahahahahahahahaha! I win! I beat the entire game without getting hit! YES! YEAH! WOOT! YAY! PWNED! ;D
-
You could try getting a Rom of Castlevania 2 for the Gameboy.

Yeah, I've heard Castlevania 2: Belmont's Revenge is a lot better than The Castlevania Adventure. I also heard that it's a lot easier too though. I'm looking for something really hard to play, and The Castlevania Adventure was a good challenge. I was actually thinking of picking up Legends because it looks a lot harder than Belmont's Revenge, but everyone says it's the worst Castlevania game ever. Haha, too bad Adventure is so short. I actually just beat the last difficulty setting AGAIN between when I typed the last post and when I'm typing this. ;D

Legends is pretty bad. I gave it a chance and wanted to like it, but it's bad.
Adventure on the other hand isn't at all. I think most of he people who hate it are people who emulated it, played half the first stage and gave up because they could be bothered to give it a chance.
Maybe it's just because I bought an actual copy of the game when it came out, but I love it. The stage design is a bit better than in Belmont's Revenge (although BR stages are pretty great) and the only thing I'd say sucks about Adventure is the downgrading whip thing. I think if they'd saved that for the second run thru it would have made the game a little more manageable.

Yeah, losing upgrades gets annoying, but then you really have to work hard on not getting hit, which helps in the fifth difficulty if you're obsessed enough to get that far.

Its alright but by far the worst in the series, but I can't complain considering I got it for 6 cents off eBay. I suppose it also doubles as a tranquilizer.
-
My own personal reason for disliking this game is so simple compared to many of these reasons...the game is boring and never was fun because, as someone said earlier, it slowed itself down, very, very noticeably.
-
The second release for gameboy was awesome man, the music the dificulty, the history... about the first one, i just hated that u couldn't use any subweapon(like Sonyavania)
But man is not the worse thing about Castlevanias...*cough* jonny boy *cough* Judgement *cough*

Difficulty? Are you saying it's more challenging than Adventure or it's easier?
-
In Reply To #42
Obviusly harder D:!! lol jk I just mentioned that CvAdventure II has a nice difficulty too
Anycase Cv Adventure was released too early D: was a bad movement from konami... they fixed that in the second and the GBC version but i would liked to use both subweapons axe and cross in same game
