Title: Castlevania SOTN Hacked: UPDATE!!!
Post by: Esco on August 16, 2008, 01:20:39 AM
Well it's been a while since i"ve updated so I'll make a long story short:

Over the last 2.5 months I've been VERY busy: working at my new job, going out with my buddies, hanging with the ladies, working out, playing with my 2 kitties, and just plain enjoying life. But that does NOT mean I haven't made time for the hack as well. And since a picture is worth a thousand words:

Here is one of the mummies teleporting.

For those of you who know a bit about SOTN, you will quickly notice that these pics all have new gfx in them. As I said some time ago, I found a way to insert a handful of new gfx in each stage, and I have been thoroughly...... shall we say "abusing" this technique. I have also been using scaling, rotation, and transparency effects to make things look a bit nice here and there as well.

And let's not forget the map editor made by my BRILLIANT FRIEND, who shall remain nameless (mostly so people don't bug the hell out of him begging for the editor) which lets me edit tiles, and sprite locations as well.

This editor does NOT allow me to add more sprites to a room, or add new rooms.... but I can edit them VERY thoroughly. And I CAN Actually add more sprites to a room... but for now I must do it via memhack.

Next up on my to do list... Medusa. Stay tuned for updates.

It looks really cool! When it's released, what format will it be in? Will I be able to play it on my PSP?

Yeah! Can I burn it and play it on my modded ps2?

nope. notice he said memhack. some of the stuff like new stages will probably work after burning, but the new programming that's done by hacking the memory won't.

anyway on topic, there's something really weird about the frankenstein's stage. the door in the middle is misaligned, and the wall on the left has a very repetitive pattern.

i see some of my sprite rips got some use for the effects. :o

I see the door misalignment too. Maybe it was on purpose though.

I don't get what you're talking about in the wall's case.

i doubt the misaligning and making it lose its visual effect was intended. do you really think esco would intend for it to look this bad? you can even see the black empty background behind it.

as for the second thing,
(https://castlevaniadungeon.net/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fserio.piiym-net.com%2Fimage%2Fwall.jpg&hash=9ab847b589920382be4995307e6437eec6f0acfd)
the pattern there repeats too much and stands out compared to the floor.

... and the wall on the left has a very repetitive pattern.

You said "left" but pointed out something on the "right." :P

I think you're going by "left" as in terms of how the room would appear in the normal castle, but you can see how I could be confused.

But yeah, it looks off: like it needs shading or something to blend it in better.

I was thinking maybe the monster breaks the door once he comes out of it, and so the door just falls to the floor...

then again, that door has many panes... so now that I think about it prolly wouldn't just fall straight and even like that.

But... what would cause these problems anyway? He changed a value somewhere he shouldn't have?

whoops, i see what you meant, wrote the wrong direction. :-X

and as for the door, esco lifted the whole stage by i think 16 pixels, but the door wasn't lifted up.

The room for the creature is NOT finalized. I just did a quick 3 minute edit on it, so it meets my needs, but looks like shit, lol. I plan on trying to redo even the tileset for that area though, but right now I'm not starting on that yet.

That also means that I have to find an appropriate theme and tileset for the area. And since the only enemies in the reverse outer wall are skeletons... I'm thinking of trying to do something like that skeletal area in Castlevania HOD.

P.S. Also akmodan's room is not finalized tilewise, and the caverns is WIP too.

well then you might wait for order of ecclesia, it has a skeleton cave like area. i could rip its tiles i suppose once it's out.

Will it be in a PSX ISO?  I know a program that will convert PSX ISOs into EBOOTs so they can be played on the PSP, since it has a built-in PSX emulator.

at least not until esco figures out how to code all his memory hacking changes into the game's asm code.

cool an update^_^
can't wait to play man!!

and hopefully Serio someone will come out with a fix so we all can get to play it on our psx/ps2/psp :P
but who knows if it can even be done i wish a hacker would comment on that.
at least tell us if its doable ;D
plus can he change the sprites yet?
he said he could add new stuff but can he change the players sprites and bad guys?
now that could make a whole new game :o
anyway will keep an eye on this :D

the player sprites are changable, but there are no good tools for that. the only one that could work (tile molester) doesn't deal well with the width settings (only allows for multiples of 8, while sotn's hero sprites also use multiples of 4 and 2), thus making over half of them inaccessible.

monster sprites are compressed and someone would have to figure out how to decompress them, then recompress to fit them into the file without changing its size. one guy, gemini did, but he gave up on that and instead of at least sharing the knowledge he hoards it all to himself.

may gemini and all his kind burn in the hottest pit of hell!!!
i hate hoarders no matter what it is.

anyway cool that you can change the sprites of the players tho :o
