This is a CV3 hack that optomon and I are doing that will feature fully non-linear play (kind of like SotN) and four playable characters, along with other features that I will describe as they are implemented. The characters are Richter Belmont, Maria Renard, Adrian "Alucard" Tepes, and Armund DeNasty

Hey I don't remember these showing up in the IRC channel (or maybe I missed them).
I'm always amazed at the things the NES could do, given the right kind of love for the game. Even though this is a hack, the extra features are sure to be welcome.
Keep up the good job!
-
Looks awesome, be sure to announce it when you finish.
-
Oh, so I should open this up in here too. We're going to need some cover art for this hack, seeing how optomon and I plan on getting NES carts made of it. So I'm asking the fans of Castlevania to try their hand at it. If you're interested and make something that optomon and I like, it will become the official cover art for the hack, you'll be in the credits, and the picture will probably come bundled with the ips patch. Here's some info to get you started.
The characters are as follows.
Good guys: Richter Belmont, Maria Renard, Alucard, and Armund DeNasty
Main Bad Guys: Death, Dracula
Info about Armund DeNasty:
Armund stands at about 5'9" when he isn't hunched over. He has shaggy brown hair. He is missing his right eye so it's covered up with an eye patch. He wears a red bandanna across his forehead (think something like Rambo has) a red or brown short jacket (When I say short, I just mean like not a trench coat), I'll let you decide the color for that. Brown pants, tall boots (you can also decide the color) and white gloves. He keeps knives strapped to the sides of his legs, and carries a sword.
Some of his back story is that he was given away at birth to a merchant ship, and was raised on the sea. Eventually he got curious about his family's past and set out to find clues. (Following events are shortly after SotN) He found that he might be able to get some answers by going after someone called Count Olrox. After fighting his way through Olrox's castle, Armund finds nothing he was looking for and only finds the Grim Reaper awaiting his arrival for some mysterious reason. He defeats the reaper, leaving the fallen castle with empty hands. He then traveled to a nearby village and vowed to hunt the creatures of the night.
The time period of this hack is a few years after SotN, so we're looking at the early 1800's, keep that in mind.
Anyways, if anyone is looking for a little art project, keep that in mind.
**EDIT**
We're going to try to have weapon upgrades that you have to find throughout the castle, so here's the sprites for those if it works out.

Looks like it'll be hella fun!

Who wants some rockin' tunes?
http://letsopenit.googlepages.com/CvCOA.nsf
open it up with however you play nsf files. If you don't play nsf files, then google how to.
Track 1: Opposing Bloodlines, Richter's theme used for the initial stage.
Track 2: Bloody Tears, much like it appeared in Simon's Quest. Probably used for the Clock Tower stage.
Track 3: An original piece likely designated for the Celestial Garden stage.

My daughter's name is Cadence. I think I'll start adding the "Of Agony" part to her name too...
It would be fitting.

Looks amazing. Can't wait.

i'm really looking forward to this one. i've found a ton of Castlevania I hacks, but very few Castlevania III hacks. it'll be nice to be able to play as multiple characters.
-
Hey, someone made some artwork, cool. Keep it up if anyone else is interested. As far as updates go, optomon and I are both in school now, so things are going slow, but a new music track is being worked on right now, so I mean stuff is still happening.

This looks quite promising, I've always had a soft spot for that pirate...

LOL
Well, the game looks great so far. But I don't really like the artwork.
-

Well then do something you think is better. That's the whole idea of leaving the game's artwork up to the community. That way I can get some options on what I'm going to use for the cart and for the manual and stuff.

I like how you got the area name in the status bar like that. Also the general look of the alchemy lab is good.

We decided there should be an area in between the clock tower and Dracula, so here's what I've done so far for the Golden Hall

Seems pretty good. Nice job :)
-
I can't really have a screenshot of this to show off, but I have a pretty big technical update. We're getting close to getting the vertical scrolling areas to scroll both up and down at the same time, which was otherwise impossible in the original game. In the original a screen could only scroll up, or down, never both. The only thing that needs fixed is that the candles and enemies disappear when they scroll off screen, once that's fixed though, that feature will be fully added in.
-
so is this going to be like a nintendo Symphony of the Night? or just an original Castlevania classic? either way, it looks totally bad ass man! Cant wait to play it man!
-
looks badass, i love the 8-bit homebrew

It's going to be like a Nintendo SotN basically. I mean some features are going to be majorly stripped down from the PSX title, such as weapons and inventory, but that's the idea.
-
So are you still planning on getting carts made for this? May I ask how you're doing that, and how they'll be available? That's a freaking sweet idea.
-
Wow, just, wow. This is by far the best homebrew I've ever seen... (Especially for being on the NES). I love how it's a Symphony style castle with no stages, and I heard some of the songs for this game, and I though Bloodlines sounded perfect. Keep up the good work, and please, don't give up the project like so many good homebrew teams before you have done!
-
This looks so amazing!! I can't wait to get to play it! :D I'm very impressed! ^^
If I could find myself the spare time I might be able to do some conceptual artwork? Since I'm an illustrator. I'm willing to try at least ^^ This is one of my latest drawings - though it's not very Castlevania-ish.. :P

This work is really interesting

Okay, here's a sample I made of some coneptual artwork for Alucards design. I tried making it a bit like his original outfit but also threw in a couple of new things.
It's merely a suggestion, just for the heck of it xP
(https://castlevaniadungeon.net/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv310%2FNeoPhoenix88%2Falucardredesign.jpg&hash=14d86b7d267c6cd3da99e4264568f34ddb734242)

Before I make this quick update post, that concept art for Alucard's design is looking really nice! That's actually a lot like the sprite for him, except without a cape. You should totally drum up some artwork, you'd definitely be a front runner for the cover art. Now on with the update:
And now for a quick lil' double post, because we got two major things working. One I can show you, and the other you'll just have to take my word for it. Here's the one thing I can show to you and explain a bit.
Real time maps now work, along with character selection. There are going to be two map screens. A real time map, which shows the area of the castle that you are in, and uncovers as you enter a new screen, and then a full castle map. We haven't figured out how to handle that one yet, if it will just always show the entire castle, or if you have to get a map item to see part of it or what. It all depends on what the NES can handle. Each map screen will also have a selection menu. The real time map will have character selection, while the castle map will have your inventory. So on with some screenies of the real time map.
(https://castlevaniadungeon.net/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi43.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe361%2Foptomon5%2F17-1.png&hash=6b581f92fb71392b3f64d22a9956097dccef2526)
This is how the map will naturally appear when you're in a new area. The little red dot is your current position.
(https://castlevaniadungeon.net/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi43.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe361%2Foptomon5%2F16-1.png&hash=441b32f68d3b3cd57c46faf9b92d5e3557293f33)
This is after you get the map item. The dark areas are parts of the map you haven't been to yet. The room with the dot is for "special" room types. Those would include things like shortcut rooms, special item rooms, and probably the merchant.
The other thing we finally got working is vertical scrolling areas. Before now those rooms could only scroll in one direction at a time, and even after we got it to scroll both ways, sprites and background data got all messed up, but now that doesn't happen any more. One plan we currently have is to also make rooms exitable from the top and bottom of the screen, so if there's a pit, it won't kill you, you'll just appear in the room below you.

Ah, good to know you fixed that nagging problem.

Here's a really quick and dirty sketch/coloring of Armund in case anyone was wondering what he's supposed to look like, which I honestly doubt.

Holy God this is like Lot's wife looked back at the ruins of Sodom, but instead of turning into a pillar of salt, she turned into a pillar of AWESOME. I'm a big fan of rom hacks that completely change the game, and this looks to take it to unimaginable levels.
Speaking of which, Dr. Mario, I have had bad luck getting some of yours for CV1 to work, mainly that one called Orchestra of Despair. I've tried patching it thousands of times, but VirtuaNES does not accept it. Am I missing something?
Edit: Oh, snap! The Cloud Castle boss from Belmont's Revenge! SWEET!

First off thanks for the kind words, though I'd honestly never really think of it as being that biblical haha
Secondly, wow, Orchestra of Despair, that's an old one. I should be wondering why you're wasting your time when there's stuff that's actually good out there. Make sure you're patching it to the European version of the game. I was a youngin' back then and didn't really pay attention to what region the game came from.
Lastly, yeah, the Angel Mummy is just way too awesome to pass up. This one is planned to work more like half skeleton, half dragon though instead of shooting out the boomerang things, and if it works right we want to try to force the player to fight from a distance. With the bosses it's all plans so far though, we haven't gotten to the point where we're actually changing/making new enemy AI.

It's looking very cool!!!! I love your work guys!!!! ;)

Quite impressive.
I have a question though. If you were to fall down a pit, or off the bottom of a vertical screen, you will die, right? If so, will that eventually be changed?
-

Yeah we're thinking about making the top and bottom of the screen function as exits also. As of right now they are death pits, but that will probably be changed seeing how it wouldn't make any sense.

Browsing the forums I came across this thread again and thought I'd have a go at updating my old cover art piece. It was a bit of fun and I thought I'd share it with you guys :)

I hope for playing this someday. ;)

i was wondering if there was anymore news to this game lol im looking forward to playing this one day lol

He mostly hangs around CVC I believe. (Too cool to come to the Dungeon anymore.)
