Title: Castlevania: SOTN hacked! Need suggestions for new stages in reverse castle!
Post by: Esco on October 13, 2008, 12:00:23 AM
Aight my peoples, I'm in need of ideas here. As I said before one of my BIG ideas was to redo most (if not all) of the 2nd castle.

There are of course several issues with this:

1)Coming up with ideas for the new areas

and

2)Coming up with the TILES for the new areas!

# 2 is of course the REALLY big one, so I figured I should ask the people what they would like to see in my game for the reverse castle stages. The stages should of course somewhat try to match the themes of the enemies in the stage. Here is what I have so far:

reverse keep: cursed prison possibly? The tiles for this one would be in the saturn version. And the only enemies in the stage are yoricks, great ghosts and tombstones, and the original stage was very short anyway.
reverse clock tower:
reverse outer wall: skeleton cave since all the enemies EXCEPT the boss are skeletons.(name needs some work, but the tiles from the new order of ecclesia's stage should do, along with some redone ones from castlevania:HOD. IF I can find someone to touch them up)
reverse marble gallery: for this one it should be an idea that gives you a feeling that you are VERY near to the source of evil.. since it would lead to shaft & dracula.
reverse olrox quarters: tombs of the undead, since all of the enemies are undead or dark types EXCEPT azaghal (open to suggestions for the name).
reverse colosseum:
reverse chapel:
reverse underground caverns:
reverse mine: death's sanctum since the only enemies are servants of his and bats
reverse catacombs:
reverse entrance:
reverse alchemy lab:

As you can see.... I'm gonna need a bit of help here, lol. Any suggestions?

Since it's really called the Black Marble Gallery, it would be nice to see it actually black.

Ooh! You should model the Reverse Chapel after Stage 4 of the X68000 game, since Medusa is there, and they're both Chapel-y stages.

Now, would this part of the hack involve completely redesigning the map layout as well? Or just the graphics? It would be neat if you could swap bosses out of specific areas and rearrange them.

Maybe the Coliseum could be the "Haunted Armory"  and you could use some Spectral Swords, Hunting Girls, Phantom Skulls, Ectoplasms, Vandal Swords, and Azaghals.  You could call the Marble Gallery the "Ebon Gate of Abyss".  Reverse Alchemy Lab could be called the  "Hall of the Archfiends" with all of the Lesser Demons and Fire Demons in there, just add some Malachis and Ctulhus.

This may be considered off-topic, but would it be possible to create a boss fight with an doppelganger impersonating Dracula?  Maybe something like the Fake Trevor, Sypha, and Grant fight, like a "Zombie impersonating Count Dracula". Maybe Tracula(like Alucart).  Or make an Alucart boss.

he can swap the tiles and redo the layout, but he's limited to the enemies that already are within the stages. it's impossible to add more, since the enemies are stored inside the stage files, both code and graphics.

Tracula would in extremely awesome... especially if he's the one in the chair like a useless little invalid with no balls.

You could model the areas after stages from other Castlevania games--Super Castlevania and on, of course (Bloodlines, Rondo, Dracula X, Chronicles and the DS titles).  Just an idea to spice things up.

bloodlines, rondo and chronicles would require a complete graphic overhaul, their design styles clash with sotn's way too much. bloodlines is too isometric, and the other two use the old nes-y tile system for the background, neither of which appear in sotn.

it'd clash even more than the monster sprite styles in ds games. :o

dracula xx and ds games are the only ones that could semi-fit, after a palette overhaul.

Uhm ... the whole point WAS nostalgia.

Here's a novel idea: leave it alone, the original is fine the way it is. If it's not broke, don't fix it. This is like someone attempting to re-do the guitar solo on Freebird. Ugh.

The original would be very boring. Something new would be very nice.

the purpose of a romhack is to change stuff that the author didn't like.

it'd be like those easy hacks where all that's done is some slight graphic replacements, but everything else's left the same, so there's little to no new experience.

Yeah, but my point is why screw with it to begin with? Maybe I'm too purist.

The hack doesn't invalidate the original.  If you're such a "purist", the original is still there for you to play.  And for those who want to try something new, the hack exists.  So yeah ...
