Title: Retconned games reinstated? Is this possible?
Post by: Iori E on November 14, 2008, 01:19:05 AM
I heard that Circle of the Moon and the two CV games for N64 have been reinstated as part of the official timeline.  And apparently the proof is a released timeline that came as a bonus with the pre-order of Portrait of Ruin.

Can this be confirmed? First of all, I did not pre-order PoR so I don't have a hard copy of my own as evidence.  Second of all, I have no idea if a Japanese version of this released timeline exists, so maybe it's just something that Konami of America made up? And third, I don't know of any official statement by Igarashi that the 3 games have been reinstated.

In any case, CV Legends is still retconned.  And I personally hope it stays that way.  Not that I don't want Sonia back, but the whole deal with Alucard hurts my brain.

They are back as Gaiden games, little side stories. It would be possible to reinstate them, but the storys would have to be edited as needed.

Coincidentally the three games mentioned appeared in the PoR preorder bonus time line without any sort of description. Only those three retconned games had no description. It can be inferred that retconned games are still retconned by this similar quality.

Supporting the reinsertion theory is that Legends was completely omitted. Though it also was not the only game omitted. Franky I can see why they would have forgotten Legends. The 64 titles were too big a blunder to ignore their existence though. Everyone knows the N64 titles existed, and were blights on the series. Legends is less known.

I would say they are still not a part of the official time line, but side story mentions.

If anyone has more info that counter acts this though, please share.

Well, here's the current official timeline:

http://www.konami.jp/gs/game/dracula/product/data.html

You can click on the links or try and read the kanji to find out what games they're talking about. I'm interested as to why 1691 lists only Castlevania 1 and X68000/Chronicles as being the same story... What happened to Castlevania IV? Nintendo Power was apparently convinced it happened after Castlevania II (of course, they also didn't say much of anything about SotN).

Likewise, Dracula X and XX are also considered the same game, though Chronicles is now the 'official story.' It seems strange that they'd leave out CV4 though, especially considering it's on Virtual Console. At least call it the same story as CV1.

Another theory I have for putting back CotM and the N64 games is that they are actually quite popular (if the amount of Japanese fanart for all 3 games is any indication).

Maybe Igarashi is softening his stance a little.

Well, if Magic: The Gathering could alter their Reprint List, I'm sure IGA could revise the ret-con list. Dracula was getting brought back every other year in the 1800s it seemed.

i dont know how id feel about the 64 games becoming part of the official time line again. they were ok games, but theres just so much about those 2 games that bothered me.

and i really miss legends, but the alucard thing does make it pretty hard to make it an official part again. i just want to see a game where they include sonia again. maybe like a remake where they fix parts of the story so it could actually work.

there's absolutely nothing stating that alucard is the father of sonia's child. in fact, what is stated, is that he's going to go back to sleep.

In Reply To #6

Carmilla appeared in the CV series PRIOR to CotM. And Cornell, IGA admits that he wanted to add a beast-type character, and Cornell being a werewolf fit in quite well. Even though he removed CotM, CV64 and LoD from the main continuity, he has said that those three games take place in an alternate timeline, and that the creators of CV64 and LoD MEANT then to take place in an alternate timeline. Hmmm, the funny thing is, in the past, he has said SOME good things about those three. The only game he completely dropped from all continuity was Legends.

The problem with legends has nothing to do with sonia's child.

It has to do with SotN, Lisa, and CoD.

they should ALL be gaidens really. when you have to bounce around 4 or more generations to get the whole story, it gets pretty screwy.

Way back when, he stated that women should not be heroes of Castlevania games.  Yet here we are with Order of Ecclesia.

Iga's statement wasn't that women couldn't be heroes... It was just that women as heroes didn't make sense in the middle ages (though that goes out the window once you consider Joan d'Arc). You know, a Belmont's gotta do what a Belmont's gotta do, and if it's a woman who's gotta do it, she's not gonna stay at home to tend the hearth.

That entire timeline was made by Konami of America, IGA had nothing to do with it, and has stated that he disagrees with it. At this point, there is no IGA approved timeline.

The games which are retconned are retconned because of other games in the series.

SotN and CoD mainly.

which, oddly enough, are the closest to being side stories...

Didn't IGA once say he regretted stating that Dracula rises from death every 100 years, because now he's running out of time periods in which to use as a setting for a new CV game?

Perhaps the reason that there is no "IGA approved timeline" is because he doesn't wanna put his foot in his mouth again.

Yeah, but the odd thing is that we never had a IGA game that has Dracula in full 100 year resurrection glory.

maybe because all time periods for that are already taken except the 1999 one. :o

i mean, starting from after his first death in 1476 there's cva1 in 1576, then cv1 in 1691, rondo in 1792, stoker's in 1897 and the final resurrection in 1999 which is the only full resurrection that doesn't have a game yet.

and iga wants to make it all epic and stuff, so he needs time to come up with all the details. i mean, we don't want another crappy half assed game that had a good concept but failed because of poor storytelling, lack of good ideas/creativity etc right?

coming up with good ideas and stuff takes time, and when you have less than a year and lots of pressure and deadlines you'll have to make cuts or just give up on many ideas altogether because you ran out of time to flesh them out more.

belmonts don't need any more of a story than whipping dracula upside the head, and watching his castle crumble from the nearby cliffs.
