Title: The Carmilla problem
Post by: Super Waffle on December 06, 2008, 11:17:14 AM
So let me get this straight.

Just recently (as in, starting from Circle of the Moon and continuing into Judgment), Konami felt Castlevania needed a female recurring antagonist on the level of Dracula, Death, etc.

I guess they wanted to give her more of a story, and failed miserably.

I'm not surprised Carmilla is a very well known story when it comes to Vampire Folklore

Yeah, she's a minor character, but is given a major story in Judgment.  What the hell is Iga thinking?

Well, Carmilla is the most famous literary female vampire and yah, she appeared in more games than Erzabeth Bartley and played the same role in Circle of the Moon so, what's exactly the problem?

Succubus? A minor boss without personality and motives, don't even mention her.

As people have already mentioned, Carmilla is a big character in Vampire Literature.

I can't see the problem yet.

Then what should you say about succubus, a single Boss wich is never the same character in two games, should she have more presence in CastleVania story than Le Fanu's Character? Did you even read Le Fanu's Carmilla? She's like a female version of Dracula and a great character for a CastleVania

Why should Succubus be more important than Carmilla? Because in one game she was a Boss at Alucard's Nightmare and in another she was Rinaldo's Daughter? Succubus is never the same girl, is just the "Sexy, lovely and bad girl in lingiere" concept wich was introduced in Symphony of the Night.

Is not a Character, i repeat, is like a Golem or a Doppelganger.

Carmilla IS a Character, just like Elisabeth, and Carmilla Appeared in more games than the Bloody Cuntess (no matter if the game comes from Konami Kobe or Tokio, is a CastleVania anyway), then Carmilla wins.

In the manga, Isaac insults a succubus pretty good by calling her a lesser demon.  Of course, his belief in that is why she got on his nerves so much.

I don't get this. What's wrong with using Carmilla?? She has a backstory, a succubus is just a minion, I'm actually surprised they continue to keep using them as bosses.

This topic is stupid.

there were only 2 succubus bosses, so i wouldn't say they keep using them. they're usually regular enemies.

I don't understand what you mean that the succubuses have more personality than Carmilla.   The succubus chars are always a different person in the games they are in and though they both have speakin lines, it doesn't necessary make them a more fleshed out character than somebody who is based on a novel.

It's like sayin that theboatman has has more personality than Orlox's.

I do not really get some ppl where they would say some characters have more personality than someone else since it seems that these ppl are basin their beliefs on comeos and not anythin else.  Originally I didn't understand ppl's fasination with Orlox till I seen some documentaries about an actual Orlox film durin the black and white movie age.

With that said, I am not talkin about Orlox but the guy in Castlevania LOI  I don't see how he became such a popular character since he just a boss with no fleshed out backstory yet ppl worship him as much, if not more than characters like Maxim.

lesser/lady vampire (or however it's called) is not a succubus. it's a vampire, turned by dracula.

Yeah after SotN, the Succubus pretty much got demoted to 'regular enemy' status.

I mean, there are Succubi in CotM, AoS, DoS, and PoR, but they're not much other than regular enemies.

Carmilla's always been a boss.  Only her servant, Laura, has been a regular enemy in PoR.

The succubus is pretty much lik wolfman where they are regularly used as regular but in two titles (three for wolfman) were bosses
