No New Super Mario Brothers DS on the poll? I'll vote for that game.

Edit:
Oops, my bad! Now I saw it!

Super Mario Galaxy showed me the most complete Mario experience ever. It had everything the others had and so much more.

Form changing puzzles? Check.

Secret worlds? Check.

Clever level designs at an enticing pace? Check.

Crappy story? (well actually it's more solid than past ones).

Every level played different from the others (except in rare cases where they reused them), and it was entertaining from beginning to end. Controls were amazing, creativity oozed from every instance -- every room -- every second -- and it's one of few Wii games out there that gets the idea of motion control down pat. It's never overused, but the parts that use it make their statements well.

And don't even get me started on the gorgeous graphics and music... Too late. Everything had a beautiful ethereal glow and several objects glistened with awesome refraction effects.  The colors were bright and inviting, and nothing felt unnatural -- crazy enough for a space-themed game. Particle effects brought the bosses to life and Nintendo pushed their ideas with physics to the max. Sega may have done it first with Sonic, but Nintendo just plain did it better. They have raised the standard AGAIN.

The soundtrack is quite simply the most ambitious and complete offering Koji Kondo and team have ever conceived and produced. The music is full of dynamic emotion; the style screams of Nintendo's personality, but with a more mature care than in the past; and quite frankly I can't find a bad track on it.

My only quips would be that the star bit collecting sometimes feels gimmicky, but I wouldn't say any more so than the traditional yellow coins; and that the difficulty is a little on the light side at times.

The original Lost Levels SMB2, the challenge of finishing the game 8 times straight without warping to see worlds A-D is just too much for me not to enjoy.

Oh well, Super Mario Bros. 3 for the win.

Those weren't made by nintendo and are really really bad.

I loved SMB3, don't get me wrong, but seeing as i'm an RPG fan, I voted Paper Mario 2. Hell, do you know an RPG that actually makes fun of itself AND has parts where you can play as Bowser in SMB-like side scrollers?

SMB3 and Paper Mario 2 FTW!!! ;D

Fun topic. I chose Super Mario World.

Mario Fav. list:
1.) Mario World
2.) Mario 64/Mario 64 DS
3.) Mario 3
4.) Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins
5.) Mario USA/Mario 2.

*"Mario World" felt the most balanced and complete.

*"Mario 64" was a revolutionary title and is still an unbelievably fun game to play. You really feel the freedom of 3D and Mario's athleticism in it. The only tiny nitpick I have is that it could have had a little more iconography (which the DS redux began to move in the right direction to fix with the addition of stuff like the P-Balloon ability).

*"Mario 3" is just plain crazy. So much new ground covered and it explodes with creativity. The level designs are often a little too short, though, and it just doesn't feel as balanced as Super Mario World.

*"Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins" is often overlooked, but it's a real gem. It feels fresh. Plus, this is when Wario debuted and was still a cool, competent villain. (I hate what they've done with Wario over the years. He could have been a great reoccurring boss like the Koopa Kids. Now, he's  an oaf).

*"Mario USA/Mario 2" may not have been a Mario game originally, but it's as Mario to me as Mario 1. Why characters like Fryguy, Mouser, and the rest haven't reappeared as villains since is beyond me. They were awesome. And those potions that created doors...incredible.

Those five are my essential Mario titles. The others, while generally solid, I could take or leave. "New Super Mario Bros" was decidedly average despite its good graphics. That whole "giant Mario is new" bit that they sold the game on turned out to be false, when I realized they had already done it in Mario 64 DS in 3D. My verdict's out on "Galaxy," as I don't have a Wii. The only other thing I want to say is that "Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island" is really overrated.

I'm glad to see so much support for Mario 3 here.  It's not my favorite game, but it usually takes top spot on my Best Games Evarr list.  It did so much without straying too far from the Mario formula set by Super Mario Bros., and it did it all on the same hardware.  Super Mario World is pretty excellent too, but it had much more powerful hardware to work with.

That poll needs to be updated to add Super Mario Galaxy 2.  IT'S SUCH A GOOD GAME, GUYZ!
That being said, SMB3 still gets my vote because 1. the suits, 2. the plethora of platforming stages, 3. the minigames, and 4. the overall variety.

I think I've enjoyed SMB3 the most since it was such a dynamite game back in the day...and still is for that matter. I had a whole lot of little gimmics to it that did not really transfer to other later entries. I think SMW could've benefited from such gimmics as well. They certainly could've kept all the powerups that were seen in SMB3 and that would've made SMW even better. I also still enjoy the original SMB as it was my first NES game expearience. SMB2 japan... I only played it just to unlock all the different worlds... It was pure torture, all that cussing and shouting... memories. Six golden coins was a good one too. The took the SMW sprites, adapted them for gameboy and wolla! I don't think I ever beat Wario though. From what A n t r a x x said about SMG, I should give that one a try one of these days. There are so many good Mario games out there that I can't really pick a fave. By the way The Last Belomnt... You forgot about SMB Wii  ;)

At least the poll's resurrection allowed me to vote for SMW2: Yoshi's Island. Best game in the world. :o No game excites me as much as that one, not even SMB3 or the first two Donkey Kong Countrys (though those CERTAINLY come close).

I started replaying the first one.  I totally did not know that once you get all the secrets in a stage, you get an exclamation point after the stage name (I did know that for DKC2 but I didn't know they had implemented that back in DKC1).

How 'bout Yoshi's Island DS?

Yoshi's Island DS is pretty cool. I wasn't very impressed by it when it came out, and barely played it, but I recently started it up again and am quite enjoying myself. Doesn't hold a candle to the first one, but it's extremely silly to expect it would—which I inevitably did upon release, but have since gotten over the fact that it's not gonna be as great as the first one. Still really fun, though. Even the baby-switching doesn't annoy me like it did when it came out.

It's a better sequel than Yoshi's Story, that's for sure.

Super Mario World got my vote, back when I was like 4 (which wasnt so long ago) I played this game to death. It was incredibly fun, although it was a bit too easy (there was one point where I had like, 100 lives).

I voted Mario 3 (even though I adore the first RPG title), and I guess it's because I always enjoyed playing as a plumber in cat ears who knew how to fly. Good times. LOL.

A racoon actually. Or in Japan, a tanuki. Like Mario in his Tanuki suit which he can turn into an invincible statue for about two seconds.

as much as I love the classic Mario titles I'm going to vote for a 3D title, and my favorite is...Super Mario Sunshine! that was like a floating dream to me, the whole cleaning duty was addictive to me the worlds were dreamy if that makes sense.
I tried enjoying Mario Galaxy and even though it was a good game, I could not enjoy it as much as I did with Sunshine I wish I could. I think one of the reasons is that I eventually got tired of the space theme and the problem is that the whole game and stages were space themes, so there wasn't any getting away really.

never knew Sunshine was that unpopular.

Heh, yeah. Describing Sunshine's levels as "dreamy" strikes me as odd, as the environments are probably the most down-to-earth and mundane in the entire series. :p I'm just not too big on some of the level designs. I don't hate the game, and am quite fond of it, but I'm not wild over it. I thought Galaxy was a huuuuge step in the right direction in terms of game design.

oh yes, Galaxy was a very unique game with great level designs that were new, since your platforming through round planets and all. Mario is supposed to fun after all.
well what I really liked about sunshine is the theme of the game really, which as obvious as it sounds...sunny, I like the sunny beaches and water designs and it's importance in gameplay, and I especially liked the haunted hotel level, with it's crimson sunset in the horizon and cold sand on the beach, last but not least, the haunted hotel in the center with it's creepy puzzles.  ;D
I think Sunshine managed to "whip" a certain part of my brain that I really liked, that's the whole dreamy aspect to me.

Mario 3!!! Easy pick on this one. I think if I would of grown up now though, with Galaxy 2 being the current, I might pick it. Thing is NES was my first system, and Mario 3 was the game I played the most when I was a kid age 6-10 or so. Then came Super Mario World, which is my 2nd favorite. I just finally got Mario 64. I skipped the N64, Gamecube, but finally have a Wii(got the black one a month or two back). Which I love, it's opened a lot of windows for me. Virtual Console rocks. I get all the best N64 games in 480p, plus I love the Gamecube games! Mario 3 though is always one I can get out and enjoy

Super Mario World.  One thing I loved about this game was that you could go back into levels that you'd beaten in areas that you'd gone through and play them again whenever you wanted.

It was hard to choose...

Hmm, this is a tough one... I really enjoyed Galaxy 2 though, so I guess I'll vote for tha-- hey wait, how come that's not an option? >_>
I'll have to go with 64, then. I mean, it was the first 3D mario

Jeorge said that this was an ooooooold thread from a while back that somebody ressurrected. It still seem popular enough what with all the newer Mario games that have come out as of late. So don't worry about the vote system at the top. It's out-of-date.
