Title: EGM is dying/dead?
Post by: Jorge D. Fuentes on January 06, 2009, 05:53:37 PM
I heard a rumor... but it could be true, that EGM's final issue is January 2009, and then it's to shut down completely.

More Info here. (http://blog.wired.com/games/2009/01/rumor-1up-sold.html)

It's mentioned in the Rumors section, but with the economy the way it is...

This totally sucks! As convenient as the internet and 1up.com is, I still really enjoy reading the articles in the mag. Its so much more enjoyable that way. Also, I find it easier to look into new games through the magazines reviews because there right there on the page I have to pass by them. When I'm looking on line I have less of a chance to go out of my way a read about a game I've never heard of.

Yay, EGM is dead. Too bad that didn't happen to Game Informer, too. :P

Agreed. Game Informer is absolute trash.

Can't say I disagree. EGM and Game Informer are recycled toilet paper.

EGM, to me, died around 1997. It started to slowly go downhill since they first released EGM2. I won't miss it. I DO miss Gamefan, though. That was probably my favorite defunct VG magazine.

Print Media has been in decline since the internet became mainstream --even major outlets like the New York Times have lost readership.  Doesn't matter to me one way or the other if EGM dies --but I'd really like to see Bradygames go down.

I have to say I've always been partial to Game Informer. Gamepro, however, is absolute trash.

Play magazine was cool too. Haven't seen them in awhile.

I warmed up to Game Informer myself as well...their review style it kinda shitty but i like their previews and their large high quality photos as well as their interviews.

As for EGM, i enjoyed the articles....however, i haven't read it in the past 5 or so years so i don't know why many people say it had started to go down hill.

Gamepro used to be the greats back in the day when they used to have the game comics inside. But like EGM, it lost it's edge around mid-90s. I didn't mind Game Informer post that time. It was alright filer type of reading. Gamefan was what I was into until up to their death in 2000. Though I can understand why EGM might be going under. I mean, game magazines in general are becoming obsolete, cause basically it takes a month to wait for the next big story, while online, there's all these different websites that break the news almost IMMEDIATELY. Not to mention nice high resolution screenshots and VG trailers. I think most VG magazines are dying out with the exception of Nintendo Power(which can keep a good amount of exclusive news for itself).

Man, EGM was my favorite game magazine. They weren't afraid to take crap from publishers like Acclaim and EA, and their reviews, I found, were almost always well-reasoned. This is truly a sad change of events for the game-journalism industry.

Wow, I haven't read EGM since the 90's. Sad to see it go, because it's been around for about 20 years now, and that's quite a feat for a gaming mag. It was a refreshing, unbiased change from Nintendo Power back in 1989 when I first discovered it. After EGM came out, Nintendo Power felt like a kid's mag. Again, I'm sad to see it go, and perhaps I may just have to go out and buy the last issue if it is true. R.I.P. Electronic Gaming Monthly...

It's going to be sad watching EGM go. I always liked them over GameInformer. It's been a while since I picked up an issue of EGM, but I remember that the articles were always more interesting. I loved the fact that it wasn't catered to young kids. Alot of you who are talking about Nintendo Power is right... it is one of the most biased game mags out there. Of course, it only stands to reason that a video game company would promote their own products through their own magazine. :/

I still get Nintendo Power issues. :D
At least now they acknowledge other consoles, not like back in the 90's where there'd be NO MENTION of other versions of the same game, etc.

I was more of a Tips & Tricks fan for some reason.

Anyways, what kills me is Ziff-Davis of all people own EGM. First they sell ZDTV off to those monkeys that owned G4 and now this.

So, did anyone hear the news about UGO buying 1UP?
http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/06/official-ugo-buys-1up-egm-dead/

So not only is EGM dead, but 1up is now ruined. They've laid off 30+ people, many of which are longtime and important contributors. That's a damn shame, because as far as the major mainstream video game sites, 1up was easily the best, IMO. I can't see myself switching over to IGN or Gamespot, because I can't stand either of those. But I won't watch UGO run 1up into the ground, either.

Not sure if it's been brought up, but it looks like Midway might be going under as well.

Really? Midway? Not so long ago, they just released a statement regarding how the MK Vs DC was a hit and how they are already planning for their next MK game(and plan on releasing info soon). Out by the end of 2009: Mortal Kombat: Financial Fatality!
