Title: Which is the best 2D metroid
Post by: darkjak951 on January 18, 2009, 03:42:10 PM
The 2D metroid games were the greatest! They had loads of exploration most games didn't have back in the NES games. Metroid has so much of an impact that many series(*cough*castlevania*cough*) used it's way of exploration and either somewhat improved on it or just failed epically(*cough*not castlevania*cough). But the question is this: Which 2D 'troid is the best? In my personal opinion, I would say the original Metroid but Metroid: Fusion would be my second best :)

I didn't like the original metroid, nor did I really enjoy any of the primes for that matter.

I did however love super metroid, it had the right atmospehere that made you feel you were alone on a hostile alien planet.
Fusion was an ok game, i enjoyed it but not as much as super, maybe because the computer was always telling you where to go next and took away the sense of exploration and learning when to use new abilities, it might have been tough but it pretty much held your hand when it came to it.

I've not really played ZM too much but it seems like a good runner up to me.

Honestly for me it's a toss-up between Zero Mission and Super Metroid. Super Metroid I'd watch my mom play for hours every day (she could beat the game with 100% in 2 hours, 15 minutes, no glitching or anything like that. I think her record time was 1:55)

But I never could get into the Original Metroid, and Zero Mission was my way of playing and enjoying it.

I voted Super Metroid cause it's probably the best game ever made in my opinion. It's not perfect but it's pretty damn close. It definitely could've been longer though.

Where the hell did 2D Metroid go anyway? The DS is ideal for a new 2D Metroid. Though I'm afraid Castlevania has actually ruined the 2D exploration formula a bit... But I still think it's time for a new old-school entry in the Metroid franchise. I want it soooo bad it's not even funny.

Super Metroid for sure. It's one of my top favorite games.

Castlevania didn't ruin it, the games just need to be longer(Ecclesia you good but short game you), and yeah they announced "Metroid:Dread" for the DS but there has been zero info on it other than the teaser found in a certin scan in metroid prime 3. Metroid Prime is awesome for bringing the classic Metroid formula into 3D but the 2D ones are just overall better and a new one needs to be made!

Actually Retro and Nintendo both have come out and said that the "Dread" scan in MP3 was in no way, shape or form related to Metroid: Dread or hinting at it.

Own Metroid 2 and Super Metroid, desperately needing Metroid (yeah my eyes on it popping up at a gaming store that sells NES stuff here), I voted Super Metroid, though the original is just as good to me. I always felt more lost with Metroid 2, it's creepy atmosphere though helps it out quite a bit.

I'd say the original Metroid. Granted, I grew up with it, but it has this super weird atmosphere that Super Metroid just doesn't match IMO. The music, the enemies, even the blocks you walk on, it all just has this really STRANGE and very creepy vibe to it. As good as the rest of them are, and as many improvements have been made on the formula, I think the original does it the best.

Gotta go with Fusion. It successfully combines the fantastic gameplay of Super Metroid with the creepy atmosphere of Metroid 2 in an entirely original game.

SotN may owe a debt to Metroid, but Metroid also owes a debt to the Alien franchise IMO.

OK!! I was between Metroid 2 and Super Metroid. I voted for Super Metroid, because it was having the most atmospheric enviroment and feeling. Landing alone on a unfriendly planet, trying to destroy it. The graphics for it's age and the sound track, are simply awesome, making it one of the best games for the Snes era.

Metoid 2, even if it was for GB, still it was great and i believe that if it was released for another console it could prove it's awesomeness. I would really love if Nintendo was going to make a remake for Metroid 2 for DS or even Wii!!

While I loooooove Super Metroid, I have to concede to Metroid: Zero Mission because of the improved control scheme.  The GBA's lack of buttons forced Nintendo to implement some fresh changes to the control scheme.  While the scheme is very resemblant of the Fusion game that came before it, the improved sense of speed and fluidity, in addition to the environments of Zebes (as opposed the BSL Station), make it a winning combination.

Super Metroid had this weird "Press Select" thing with the five alternate fire mechanisms (Missile, Super Missile, PowerBomb, Grappling Beam, and X-Ray Scope).  While I loved it at the time, now that I return to play it, I think it could've been further improved by implementing ZeroMission's controls setup.

**votes for Zero Mission**

Mind you, this is a very close decision.  It's really Super VS. MZM.

Castlevania didn't ruin it

Well not exactly, but Castlevania has exhausted the original Metroid formula. I'm not sure if a new 2D Metroid would be able to introduce enough new stuff... I guess time will tell.

Anyway, I really want Zero Mission. I've never played it and it looks absolutely superb in every possible way. Gonna go hunt for it straight away!

Yeah, it did kind of exhaust it i guess. Also, Zero Mission is a great game in it's own right but don't be suprised if you beat it in 4 hours....

Absolutely Super Metroid, no question at all.  Though the original Metroid gets the credit for the gameplay format, which was completely unheard of at the time, Super perfected it.  The atmosphere of Super is just unmatched.  I really need to play through Metroid II again, but it's probably my least favorite since it's mostly linear.  Fusion could've been fantastic if it wasn't for the hand-holding the whole way through.  And Zero Mission was a great mix of remake+update, but the map completely destroyed the feeling of being lost/abandoned/buried from the first game.  One of the best parts of the original Metroid was mapping out the game yourself.

I really enjoy the atmosphere of Metroid Fusion the best. It has great music and keeps you in suspense most of the time. I also like the orignal Metroid.

Super Metroid, hands down. It perfected the formula the original introduced, and didn't add any pointless additions, like Fusion's computer-that-holds-your-hand or Zero Mission's Chozo Statues-that-tell-you-where-to-go, as well the constant travel between Norfair/Tourian (can't remember which) and the rest of the area. Those two games were too linear and didn't give the same freedom that Super Metroid gave.

It also had better bosses and general level design. The music also beats them by a long shot (even though Kraid's lair in Zero Mission is extremely good), especially with all the SCVIV-esque atmospheric tunes, like the wooded part of Brinstar.

So yeah, basically, Super Metroid took everything Metroid was and made it better. It didn't attach any shiny bells that detracted from the major experience, just made it higher quality.

Also, hi :)

Zero Mission's music was awesome and great remix's of the first one, I think it matches Super. Also welcome, hate to go off topic but tells me what happened to the chapel?

what happened to the chapel?

Server went apeshit and ditched every site it hosted : | The Chapel went along with it, and won't be up for a while.

And to stay on topic, yeah, Zero Mission had some great music, but in most cases it lost the feel of the original. And even so, I can't say it matches Super Metroid. That game's music is just amazing.

This is hands-down Super Metroid. Metroids one and two are far too primitive to compete, and Fusion is too linear.

Umm I'll admit I haven't finished Zero Mission tho, and have heard very good things about it.

That said, just look at that list. There simply need to be MORE 2D Metroids :(

There was going to be (if you didn't already know), but unfortunately it got cancelled.

Metroid:Dread was going to be a 2D sequel to Metroid: Fusion for the Nintendo DS, but it got canned a few years back.

A shame, really. They could've done some great things with that game. /:

There's really no excuse for this :(

That was what I heard, anyway, though I can't seem to find the source at the moment. Either way its unfortunately unlikely we'd see it come to fruition anyway. /:

I guess for now the Super Metroid Redesign rom hack will have to suffice.

I vote Super Metroid, hands down. The countless hours my sister and I played that game and never got sick of it factors highly into that vote. I will say that I also loved the original Metroid. That was another game that I played for hours and ultimately beat by sketching my own maps. It could be frustrating at times, however, so that's why it didn't get my vote. I have Metroid II: Return of Samus, but I never got into it as much as the other 2D Metroids. It's a nice entry into the series, but I would say it's also the weakest. A remake of it would be superb. :)

Both Metroid: Fusion and Metroid: Zero Mission I also enjoyed immensely. However, still not to the same degree as Super Metroid. I really wish Metroid: Dread would see the light of day. But then again, I've been wishing for that for years. :'(

I wonder why Dread was cancelled? Nintendo surely knows how succesfull the formula is, with the DS Castlevanias selling like krazy! (Or at least reasonably well)

I want one ENORMOUS desolate world where you have absolutely no idea where you're supposed to go, and what to do when you get there - if you ever get there. I want dark eerie caverns and abandoned laboratories with test tubes containing.. dunno.. space fetuses. I want hidden items behind suspicious walls. I want strange creatures in strange places. I want disgusting, heartstopping boss monsters that take forever to kill.

Also, I want it now  >:(

First off, Metroid was never terribly popular in Japan so thats why nintendo dont really care so much.

Secondly... a Fallout 3 style metroid sounds good I like it.

Unlike the Zelda series poll on this forum, this question is a no-brainer. SUPER METROID!

Metroid set a good foundation. Metroid II established the trend of new upgrades and challenges. These two built into Super Metroid, which took everything that worked from 1 and 2, and added even more. No Metroidvania has come close, even Symphony of the Night. The only Metroid to come close, 2D or 3D, is the first Prime entry. For me Super Metroid is easily among the best games ever made.

The other 2D entries: Fusion had a good story setup, but was far too linear and didn't really add much. Zero Mission was like a light remake of Super Metroid using the shell of the original Metroid. It was a lot of fun--more so than Fusion-- but too easy and it ultimately felt too much like a retread (though, it was an enhanced remake of the original NES Metroid game, so that's to be expected). The new comic book-esque art-style was attractive, but it also lightened the overall atmosphere a bit. I liked the ledge grab ability added to Fusion and Zero Mission, but the pace of Zero Mission's character was way too fast. The Zero Suit segment was OK, but not necessary in the larger scheme of things and leans more toward fan-service.

I had hoped 'Metroid Dread' would be made, but who knows. I'd like a new 2D one for DS that really pushes the formula beyond Super Metroid and continues the story after Fusion. And, PLEASE, no lazy top screen = map screen junk. That's such a waste.

But, in some ways, I'd like an epic 3RD PERSON Metroid game even more. I still have hard feelings over the limitations of having 3D Metroid be first-person (outside of the Morph Ball).

Regarding the Metroidvanias...I think they've been lazy and lackluster for quite some time. Metroid could still show'em a thing or two. But who knows if it'll happen since Nintendo has decided in recent years that Samus is their [unneeded] answer to Halo.

I've never understood this view. Would it be harder to program for? Probably. But the Morph Ball sequences, and the animation of rolling into and out of them, show that 3rd person 3D is possible. Metroid is basically a sci-fi Zelda, and if Zelda could work in 3rd person 3D, so can Metroid.

The advantages of this would allow for more involved platforming and environmental interaction (ledge grabs, zip lines, wall jumps, etc), as well as items like the classic Speed Booster and Space Jump. Also, I think there's more room to grow as far as items/control options in 3rd person. Look at the opening to Super Smash Bros Melee where Samus is fighting Ridley, and tell me that doesn't look intense compared to a screen with a floating gun-arm out in front.

I just think a full blown 3rd person game isn't really necessary, when they can make a superior New smb-esque game for the DSi. Just sayin'..

Beautiful post and a perfect summary of this game. I'm surprised thay haven't put Super Metroid on the DS (I don't have a Wii so I'd be clueless if they put it on the Virtual Console).

I haven't played Metroid 2 or Fusion, but I doubt they compare. Zero Mission is fun but WAY too short (I beat it in three hours on my first attempt.). the original, while a classic, is ridiculous.

super metroid, been playin' it since 94'. Still finding new hidden shit. Games one of the biggest in existence when it comes to the sheer number of hidden upgrades and items dispersed out over the gigantic planet of zebes. Anybody who can beat it in under 3 hours with everything is a god of gaming.
