Title: NEW Metroid: Other M
Post by: Abodos on June 02, 2009, 08:40:04 PM
Good gravy, of all the announcements from E3, this announcement was probably the most surprising of them all:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFHrmaTNUSo

Finally, Nintendo is paying some well-deserved attention to one of its most hardcore franchises!!

Wow, I didn't think we'd get more Metroid for a few years, but it is always a welcome surprise!

Yeah it's totally bought.
Day 1 purchase.
Also, I'm almost certain the M is for "Malkovich".

This is like "Metroid: The Federation Years" or something, haha.

PURE JOY! I've been telling people for years that Metroid was meant to be a 3rd Person 3D game (not FPS slowpoke style), and finally--finally--it happens!!! (Prime series wasn't bad, but it limited the move set of Samus--who is naturally acrobatic). As long as there's the classic exploration mixed in, this is the Wii 'system-seller' for me. Wow. BEST OF SHOW. Most excitement I've felt for a long time, and I am not easily excited these days.

Yeah this helped ease the pain of no Zelda showing.

I'm very excited to see the DASH BOOTS return! :D

(You can see Samus charging through ice walls at high speed at one point in the video)

Also it looks like this will be a much more "hollywood style" presentation complete with several flashbacks into Samus upbringing under the Chozo and even perhaps the loss of her real family. There appears to be a lot more secondary characters with alot of importance to the plot in this too.

But, I wonder what the hell the title means, and I hope it gets changed.

Man, I wish they'd given more than just this 2 minute trailer. We can only guess what this Other M will be like, and considering that trailers tend to only show the most intense sequences of action, the trailer can't be used as a complete guide to what the whole game will actually be like.

One interesting thing, though, was that blond lady in the lab coat near the end, more specifically the repressed surprise she seemed to have when Samus identified herself.  Could she possibly be a clone? a Samus from another dimension or alternate timeline? a relative? maybe even an SA-X? or just some random woman who happens to look an awful lot like Samus?

She's the "Other M" I'm sure ;)

Might even be a long lost sister or mother or something.

NEW INTERVIEW: http://www.1up.com/do/previewPage?cId=3174587

The game takes place between Super and Fusion and will feature both quiet exploration and action elements. It's being described as similar to Fusion in structure.

Unfortunately, the interviewer didn't ask about the breakdown of the gameplay in regards to 2D/3D/FPS/TPS, etc. (Hopefully the mixture of linear and open world will be more balanced that Fusion was).

looks like the game would be fun gameplay wise but the in-game graphics look a lil' shaky.

...Why won't somebody ask them what the general breakdown of dimensional gameplay is?! I'm still confused what the game is.  Some people say it's only 2.5D, but I don't understand how there's a FPS mode in it then. Besides the game does seem to show visual depth. One of the directors stated they needed Team Ninja because they could only do 2D, and Team Ninja brought 3D expertise So is it more 2D or 3D??? (I want more 3D personally).

EDIT: NEWEST INFO INTERVIEW: http://wii.ign.com/articles/991/991793p1.html
Most of it's old, canned responses, but this interview finally notes the gameplay...but the director says he can't reveal the details, only that the trailer should give you a hint at how the perspectives are going the mesh.

It's most likely going to be played in third-person, with first-person visor modes available for more complex targeting like during a boss.

What concerns me is, WHERE'S THE MORPH BALL in that video?

I think it'll be primarily 3rd-person, too, but in 3D or 2.5D? I have to imagine they'd go mostly with 3D, which would be a nice evolution for the series. (I don't want this to be just New Super Mario Bros for DS, but featuring Samus. They can do something like that on DS later if they want).

As for the Morph Ball, I wouldn't worry. Retro nailed that element, so the groundwork is there, and Other M interviews have stressed it'll have all the classic Metroid exploration as well as the action, so that follows that the Morph Ball is an iconic must.

Holy SHIT! this looks Fantastic! Looks like we're finally getting a REAL Metroid Again!:D After Prime 1 it went to hell in a handbag.

"Not going to be insanely hard like Ninja Gaiden". WOO.

ninja gaiden was hard because it had save points in all the worst places. Every time I found one I always had no health and every time I had health and was owning ass there wasn't one in sight.
