With Lords of Shadows rebooting the series and will obvious be the main focus of Castlevania if it does well- Do you think (assuming IGA is still on for portable Castlevanias) that this will light a fire under IGA's ass to make the 1999 battle before he could possibly lose his position as Castlevania producer?
If LoS wasn't going to come out I say IGA would keep putting off the 1999 battle,(probably too afraid of the fan reaction since Castlevania fans can be harsh with him) but now.... If he was granted to make another game for a portable he should just do 1999. Obviously he should really bust his ass harder on this more than the others. Otherwise if he doesn't make it now he may never have the chance later.
I personally feel that SotN sequel for the new generation systems is cancelled. I doubt they are going to put that up with lords of shadows and have everyone confused with two different timelines. So let's hope IGA is not drinking away in an alley on unemployment and working hard for something truly epic for his timeline. Time to step it up!
-
If they do make the '99 battle, I hope it's for PSP with superior sound, sharp 2D, etc.
Before anyone contests to this, you DS fanboys already have THREE titles, PSP only has 1 :-\ ..UNLESS they decide to make it for Wii (and still keep it 2D)
-
a DS is cheaper to buy than a PSP, though, and better library of games.
PSP players just like PSP cause they can hack/download and own games for free with the older model.
-
In Reply I would like it on the DS personally (having a DS and all the DS castlevanias help). I don't think it would be on the PSP. The DS is more popular right now with the DSi. A new Castlevania DS could be spectacular if IGA just used his imagination a little more and use the potential of dual screens to the game. A dual screen castlevania would be cool!

In Reply To #3,
You can buy a used PSP if you don't want to spend a lot. Plus, a sprite based game will look a hell of a lot better on PSP anyway. Not to mention the music, too.
And you don't need to use bold text all the time to try and get your point across

I've always thought that making the 1999 game should be saved for last (or else made into a big multi-game event). If Iga is really going to be out of the Castlevania business, they NEED to let him make one last hurrah, and it should be the 1999 game to wrap things up.
-
This may be assuming too much, but I think IGA already has lost his position as producer of Castlevania, the main direction of the series anyway.

"I think any new games for those systems would need to be in line with the new focus and story of the rebooted series. If LoS is a complete reboot of the CV mythology, which it seems to be, then I don't think Konami would sink all this money into the CV "rebirth" and putting the series back on the mainstream radar, only to confuse fans by having IGA running a totally separate storyline on the handhelds."
I disagree. The handhelds (mostly the DS) should keep the focus on the original timeline. They already have games on the portable that are part of that timeline. It would be confusing to have LOS castlevania material on a DS just as the Sotn sequel would be confusing to come out on the same system and around the same time as LoS. IGA should get one last chance to wrap up his series if it does need to end.
"I don't care if it ever gets made. First of all, I never liked that Iga took the series into modern and future times. Secondly, no matter what he does, it won't be as good as our imaginations. "
Well thanks for the positive input, lol... Well I like to see it made and I love IGA's work on the 2d games. I even really enjoy LoI. CoD kinda blows though. And yes my imagination will be better but I can't load that in my DS and play it.

I'm not saying whether he should or shouldn't be allowed to wrap up his timeline, I just don't think it makes business sense for Konami. It seems like they are trying to re-brand Castlevania as one of their flagship franchises, which is going to cost them a lot of money not just in LoS budget, but also in marketing. It doesn't make much sense to have a spinoff DS game that is contradictory to this new identity and story direction, unless it was just some retro remake of a past game. And since we know exactly what happens, its not as if there is this gaping open-ended plot loop that needs to be closed. We know exactly what happened in 1999, as told to us in the Sorrow games.

Of course we know what happened, but HOW it happened, is still left to be desired

I think it would, should, and COULD be a lot more epic than you described :/
I hope you don't respond with "but that's how IGA will make it etc etc."

Not at all, I just think that we've seen this all play out so many times, I don't think any cheesy dialogue is going to be as epic as what people have built up in their own imaginations.

Id LOVE to see a CV on psp that looks like Prinny. Man thatd rock. Hell even PLAYIN like Prinny wouldnt exactly be a bad thing

You do have a point there. IGA has to realize now that is working with a DS and not a gameboy and story sequences do not just have to be some dialogue and a pic on a screen. He should use the power of the DS to make animated cut scenes and voice acting- something a little more than they have been doing.
I think the problem with IGA is that everyone loves SotN too much and he is to afraid to stray far from that concept. But he needs to think of new ideas (not just in maps or gameplay) but in presentation and using the DS to its full extent like using both screens for action. Like I said- maybe this Lord of Shadows game will light a fire under his ass and make him do something fresh but yet still Castlevania.

I posted this in the other thread about LoS, but it seems relevant here also.

Maybe now Konami will allow IGA to do some Wiiware/XBLA/PSN remakes of the older games to generate fan interest for the series in anticipation for LoS next year. Similar to how Capcom released Bionic Commando Rearmed several months before releasing a new 3D Bionic Commando.

"DS Sales may be good, but this interview makes it sound like he has to fight to get DS games made. I think Konami wants to focus on the console systems for now."
That's interesting. Time will tell what goes on. We can only speculate for now.
-
The problem as I see it with development on the DS is that there really doesn't seem to be a whole lot of incentive to put much time or money into the games there. When absolute shovelware flies off the shelves, game studios see very little need to invest much into producing anything for it. Look at GTA Chinatown Wars, the game is huge, and is one of the only games in the system's entire lifecycle that seems to push the hardware, and its sales have been sluggish at best.
Shovelware and simple, pick up and play style games flourish on the DS, but anything else has an uphill battle coming for it right out of the gates.
-
According to this interview, I have my doubts the 1999 game will ever be made...

I think this interview demonstrates a big reason why the story and timeline have been so flawed.

IGA done cause of Lords of Shadow? Man this blows, I mean his games could be so much better but if Castlevania that we all grew up to know and love is destroyed cause of Lords of Shadow, im going to be literally f'ing pissed! I do not want to think of Simon, Alucard, Richter, John Morris, Trevor, etc. just die out cause of one simple game! Man this sucks lol well, good knowing Castlevania as Castlevania instead of Lords of Shadow.

I think people may be looking at the possibility of a new story in LoS the wrong way.
-
Ya, Justin is right. The new series may start a new storyline. But it doesnt' make the previous storyline (or its Gaidens) or games cease to exist. It may or may not lead to more stories or Gaidens filling in the older storyline, but it doesn't wipe those games from existence either.
As I've said before me personally the stories never really were Castlevania's strong point. To me it was all about the atmosphere, crazy enemies, and gameplay. LoD may be starting a new storyline, but I'm sure its going to be a fun game as well.
-
No please. The 199 game must be a great epic game, and 2D=not that epic.
Just hope that IGA will de another 3D CV (after AlucardVania) and make it. After that, he could get fired, we don't need him anymore.

We need news about the Alucard game. Is it still being made or was it canned? Something tells me the Alucard game has to at least live up to quality of Lords of Shadow for Konami to support it.
-
I don't think it's cancelled. Just think about that, so ,we we never know how the Belmonts lost the whip and how Alucard became Arikado or how Julius killed Dracula? That would be unforgivable (Does that word exist? I forgot the word xDD)and Konami can't do that, if we mean something for them.
I think they will let IGA finish its storyline and after that the saga will be let down to Dave Cox. (There is a new interview, but it's in spanish, it says that the game will rule, ok, those are words of the producer (not Cox, he's the director) he says that Kojima is loving the game and he hasn't said anything complaining the game)

I hate to say it, but that's very unlikely. Lords of Shadow by trailer alone already blew the other 3D Castlevanias out of the water. The design is high quality, and my only question is if it'll be a real Castlevania game or just some off feeling game with the title slapped on.
As much as I respect the guy, I don't think IGA could top it. His past 3D titles certainly don't show enough potential to surpass Lords of Shadow. I liked Lament, but Lords of Shadow is on a whole other level really.

I'm not sure but I think the Van Helsing game had a lower budget than IGA's games in some ways surpassed his 3-d games in level design. Sadly enough.
Also as I posted above IGA has admitted he doesn't really write games with stories in mind, he writes the games and then decides to slap the story on top of it.
Following that system its very unlikely he would have ever created any of the game stories the fans wanted, and just filled in with random stories that just hinted back to certain events he had in his mind.
For that matter we don't even know if some of the referenced events were just there for background, and were never intended to be converted into a video game. Some like the war of 1999 may have even beyond the scope of a normal Castlevania game. From what we know it was apparently full scale battle with armies against the Dark Lord, and the heros leading the forces (& sealing him). A 2-d game where you play a single character or even a 3-d game where you control a single character would fail to live up to that kind of scale. Maybe a strategy game, with some Overlord style minion control, but not the lonely quests like previous Castlevanias, in which you only come across an ally occasionally & that's only to progress the story.
Also, a little mystery can enhance the overall story. So perhaps its best if we didn't know all the details. There is the possibility that if he forced the story so it would fit into the confines of a game it wouldn't live up to fans expectations and there speculation. People might feel disapointed.
-
I would say leave the story of 1999 (and the rest of IGA's timeline) open for fan fiction. Its not like IGA had some great story in mind to tell; its actually pretty obvious from his interview that 1999 was just a background plot point for his Sorrow games, and he never intended to make the "epic" game story out of it that fans seem to expect. Let the fans and their own imaginations write the ending (which I'm sure would be much more epic that the cheesy dialogue and paper-thin plot that IGA would come up with), and start the Castlevania story over with this new team.
-
Iga simply screwed up everything. I mean, was just make few good Castlevanias with 100 years resurrection and Belmonts with only a few of deep story like SOTN that difficult??
Now, if IGA's out (We don't have any information) Cox had to fix all those horrible plot hole, so, he made the right decision for starting, start a new concept in a story presummably placed at the coldest episode of the chronology; if he goes right, let's hope he will fix the entire chrono.
-
As excited as I am for Lords of Shadow, part of me wants it to be horrible, just so all the IGA bashers can shut up about somebody else making a better game!
-
We'll, I want it to be good, but I never seen why people get so worked up when they start bashing IGA. You'd think IGA went into their houses and killed their families, strung them up and whipped them until their backs were bleeding with is faux-Vampire Killer.
-
Important events like the DCW should not be developed for portatil consoles, its a damn war for godsake :-X
saludos

I won't forget if there won't be a game of 1999.
I like the reboot idea, but if we think abou it, almost every saga that had a reboot ended its previous story; that's not the case of CV, thanks to IGA, we have HUGE plot holes and the 1999 is the second worst of them (The worst is how the Belmotn clan vanished and returned).
