Title: My Castlevania Papercraft
Post by: crisis on July 02, 2009, 12:13:59 AM
After gaining some inspiration from a Ninja Gaiden (http://tlundmark.blogspot.com/2009/06/ninja-gaiden-papercraft.html) papercraft model (as well as countless others) I decided to create my own in my spare time:

(https://castlevaniadungeon.net/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv119%2Fc0mbat%2Fcvpaper2.jpg&hash=d4ea5f936750ee5b2e7c56b77a95f3b93c194bfc)

The lighting conditions were kinda rough (as is picture quality). Maybe in the future I'll make some more models, depending on feedback!

How do you make one?

I assume it's like a shoebox, unfolded for a base? And like you just print and paste things from the computer onto similar-cut pieces of poster board ... am I wrong?

I'd love to make one for Ys 3 or Super Metroid :D

Thanks for the praise everybody :D

I don't use a shoebox (although that would be a good idea!). I typically use "heavyweight paper matte" by Epson, you can find it at Staples or any computer store for like $20 for a full pack. The pieces aren't as flimsy and you can stand characters up easily. It's just a matter of measuring the dimensions on paper, make sure it's scaled to your liking, and taping the actual stage together (although there are more reliable methods than using standard tape, it's just quicker for me to use). Also a hobby knife is required (or a standard razor) to make the characters more precise. I'll also try and make a tutorial soon!

Here's a quick one I did today. Can you guess what game it is??

I'm taking the pics using my cell, & the quality is horrible! I'll try and take better pics in the future using a normal camera cuz these low-quality pics really don't do the models justice ._.

so your doin em yourself? Prolly why I cant find any CV ones lol. I dont have a printer so I goto my local print shop and get him to print me my copies on heavy stock paper. It works very well.

Soooo yeah, I definitely want to make something like that SotN one. That's really pretty. The CV1 one is nice too, but the SotN one is great because of the layers.

Beautiful pieces--I almost believed the SOTN one was an actual screenshot.  I like to call this type of thing 2.5D art--I used to make that kind of stuff, albeit hand-drawn, not with sprites, years ago, before I started doing actual sculptures.

This topic needs to come back roaring with tutorials and more bad assery. I need to know how to do this!
Title: Re: My Castlevania Papercraft
Post by: Aridale on July 09, 2010, 08:34:28 PM
its not hard. You can do it a few ways but the best would be to get the sprite sheets for the chars ya want and the background. Pick the animation frame for the chars to set em up how ya want and print em all on a solid background (like the standard white paper) Print the background by its self. Cut out the chars as close to the sprite work as possible best to use an exacto knife. Leave a lil bit on the bottom of the chars to fold back so you can place em on the floor of the scene. Or attach a piece behind em to stick em to the background if they fly or somethin

All there is too it. Print everythin on pretty heavy paper stock so its not flimsy like normal printer paper and before ya know it youll have custom CV scenes. Id start with the 8bit stuff if youve never done it cause itll be easier to cut around the huge pixels

Next time Im headed to work I might swing by my local print shop and have him print me some stuff. If I do Ill post pics of whatever I make

These are freaking epic and amazing! Awesome job, Crisis!

Out of curiosity, how long does it normally take you to make one of these?
Title: Re: My Castlevania Papercraft
Post by: crisis on January 26, 2011, 10:54:17 PM
thnx Kaori :)

Usually takes me a few hours to put the pieces together, but with these last ones it took me way longer cuz I didn't have printer ink & the heavyweight matte paper required (money was kinda tight). So now that I have all the resources & materials available I could do scenes pretty quickly. I'll try do to some more more this weekend given my social life doesn't get killed, lol!
