Title: Will Castlevania translate well into live-action or animation ?
Post by: agross on August 18, 2009, 07:20:01 PM
With the upcoming big screen adaptation of Castlevania as
well as the direct-to-dvd animated movie. Can Castlevania
make a big leap from videogames to live-action and animation?

It really depends on what games they are based off of and how much the writers and cast know those videogames.  While I hope that they are well done, I'm not going to get my hopes up.

They could, but they won't.

I think it will. Castlevania could be a big hit if well made, and the studio is taking its time at least

That depends on the guionist and artist...
Well we have Warren and his goatsex jokes on the castlevania animation and James Wan with the albine metrosexual katana Belmont and his phrase "finally the human can be as sexy as the vampire blablacrap"

It could be worse, though. Rob Zombie's "Castlevania". Have Dracula curse every other word, and such.

I just hope that most of the movie isn't just going to be the main character wandering around the castle kill monsters with little if any dialogue.  After all, that is what most of the early games are.  I want it to be kind of like OoE in which there is a twist that changes everything in regards to what the main character knows and as a result that character ends up doing the unexpected.  For example, in OoE, it is revealed that Ecclesia's intent is to revive Dracula instead of completely destroying him and as a result Shanoa has to fight her mentor and then actually venture into the castle and confront Dracula directly.

personally i think castlevania would be better animated, would be able to do more with less that way.  however it will likely be live action as thats the current *norm*.

The movie will likely be crappy. Anderson was first attached to it(and his draft of the script was horrible). Then Sylvain White stepped in and decided to do something else(and even met with IGA on some occasions), seemingly revolving around Trevor Belmont. And THEN, Wan was attached, and we got that cool art piece and promises that it will be a lot like a live-action anime movie(and Wan seemed to be a VERY enthusiastic fan). Now, Anderson's back on the project, and I sure as hell don't know what he's got planned, but I would've chosen both Sylvain and Wan over Anderson. At least Sylvain and Wan admitted to being CV fans.

Anderson back on? When? Why?

I think any cv movie should be done in CG like FF7: Advent Children.  I just think that it's cooler and there isn't any need to try and find actors who look the part.  All that is needed are skilled computer animators, script writers who are fans of the cv series and know what they are writing about, and finally decent voice actors for the characters.

I don't know why, but it was reported at many of the major horror news sites. I saw it on BD, though also stumbled upon it at Shock Till You Drop. The second I heard of this, my enthusiasm went down.

I think the story has the potential to make a good live action movie.  Unfortunately, the BEST we can realistically hope for is a piss poor imitation of Van Helsing, and we probably won't even get something that good.

The studios have never done a video game movie justice, no matter how good the game in question is.  The problem is that as a source of material, video games aren't considered "serious" enough to warrant any kind of respect.  So they'll deviate widely from it to try to attract a larger audience. Elements that made the game successful will be discarded in favor of elements from other (more successful) movies. It has to do with sales figures.  Even the best selling video game on any given year doesn't make enough money for the studios to think of it as successful on its own merits.  For them to sink the money into developing it as a motion picture, it will need to have wider appeal so as to garuntee more tickets will be sold.

Just look at what they did to DOOM.  Scary atmosphere, great premise, lots of action.  It should have been impossible to fuck up, but they turned it into an action vehicle for Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.  They took out the idea of monsters from Hell (wouldn't want any controversy, now would we?") and replaced it with some lame "evil virus," gutted the gore and violence, and included only a few references to game "specific things," like the BFG-9000. In short, the end product had less in common with DOOM than Ghosts of Mars did.

I'm sorry to say this, but we're probably about to see something that will be Castlevania in name only.
