Title: Castlevania Multiplayer??
Post by: MeSako on December 27, 2009, 12:58:31 PM
I already made a thread about an alternative type of game to Castlevania (a horror survival to be exact), and I dont think this thread will be as good, but I'll try anyway.

In a lot of the Castlevanias there are several heroes, and in some you even get to switch what charakter to use mid-game (C3, PoR)
What if a second player took control of the other character? Or maybe up too 4 players? And everyone got to go wherever they liked, and explore the castle and surrounding areas at there own leisure. But with several places where teamwork is needed.

You who have played Kirby and the amazing mirror (GBA) knows how I mean.
It was when I played just that game with a friend that I asked myself, why not do this with a Castlevania game, and let us run around Europe, slaying monsters and gaining abilities to reach new areas.

4-player would be a lot like Gauntlet games, if you were going for action.
If they were more for adventure/RPG, it'd be like Four Swords Adventures.

I love the way "The Lost Vikings" did it, but that was one player, multiple characters (CV3 style).

It could work, actually. I think PoR, except characters can go off by themselves if need be.

I could see this happening but it would be to hard as a side scroller because if you had whip and accidently whipped your friend he would lose health but for the upcoming game (which it better be good or im never playing a new castlevania game for the rest of my life)
I could see it happening

No, no, no and NO!
I'm against multiplayer for the sake of multiplayer, castlevania is a personale xperience, that's why all of us have so different opinions of its escence, it means something different for each of us, we want to feel our personal experience with it, a castlevania multiplayer would ruin that, and turn the saga into an excuse to play gothic deathmatch. Really, do you want deathmatch? capture the flag of dracula?
Ridicoulous.

Who says it's for the sake of multiplayer? You could have some really fun team battles. Like CV3, only everyone could fight at once.

In a 2D Castlevania it would indeed be difficult. Rather than long corridors and tall enclosed platforming areas, you would need large open space filled with lots of monsters to kill. A metroidvania would certainly not work in this format, unless when the two of you went in separate rooms it split into two screens and you could explore two areas at once (wait that would be extremely badass). But a linear castlevania would need more space and two player specific pitfalls, due to so much of castlevania platforming being based on individual timing.

I love the way "The Lost Vikings" did it, but that was one player, multiple characters (CV3 style).

Very good place to start,  Lost Vikings with a Multi-player option.  Each Character could have 4 possible States; Player Control, AI Control, "Stay", and Out of Play.  Four Different Classes available, refered to by surname (Example: Belmont, DyNasty, Lecrade, Belnades) each of which as a unique Primary weapon and a set of unique Sub weapons.  If normal multiplayer is enabled, a 2nd Player can control any of the available characters not in use.  An advanced multiplayer mode could be an unlockable extra, allowing for up to 4 players to play as any character. (even if that character is being used by someone else.)

Normal mode, is the "Plot mode" the four classes reflect the character's personality and are locked to each character's respective gender.  After you beat the game, you unlock the customization options, Including gender (Want to be a female Belmont or a male Belnades? no problem.) and clothing color (Like Joseph's Cloak from SotN.)

Fourswords, was played with each player using their own GBA,  The same could work for a Metriodvainia game on DS, (Wireless conection would make it far more convenient too.)

Im sorry.. but did you even read my original post?
Multiplayer dosnt atomaticly mean deathmatches or capture the flag.
Im talking about Co-Op games, where all players cooperate to reach the same gaol, kill Dracula, or whatever the story would be in that game.
Portrait of Ruin could very much have been a 2 player game. One controll Jonathan and the second player controll Charlot, and they would be able to go different ways, but would need to help eachother out in different places.

If you played Kirby & the Amazing Mirror for GBA, you would know what I mean (I already mentioned that in the OP)
Check it out. That game is NOT linear, it is NOT deathmatch, it is NOT capture the flag.
It is pure free roaming co-op gameplay!

My fault, you are right, I didn't read the first post :-[ it's because multipolayer means deatmatch and capture the flagright now, but if you are talking about "classic" multiplayer, of course! :D Imean, did you read trhe recent news of Splinter Cell Conviction? The multiplayer will be a cooperative story acting as a prequel tpo the main game, running 6 hours. THAT'S REAL MULTIPLAYER! :D

Actually, if it is ever made, the 1999 CV could be a great chance to try this concept of a multiplayer CV.  After all, that event is suppose to be a war and if I remember correctly in AoS, one of the characters implied that there were many individuals involved.  It's had to say whether such an idea would fly with this event for the reason that there are few details of what exactly happened.  It's possible though (especially if it's split-screen and 2D).  One person would control one character and another person would control another character, but will be able to go to a different part of the castle.  There could be a gate in one part of the castle with a corresponding switch in another part of the castle, but it could require someone to stand on the switch to keep the gate open.  This is only one possible scenario.

I would have to agree that a multiplayer Castlevania would be pretty cool. Especially if you had all the families coming together (The Belmonts, Alucard, Belnades, Morris, Lecardes, DaNastys, etc) that would be bad ass.
