Title: Castlevania: The Concert (february)
Post by: shelverton. on January 01, 2010, 06:53:20 AM

Dunno if this has been discussed before, but there is a Castlevania Concert in Stockholm, Sweden in february. Is this a Sweden-only thing or some kind of tour? Michiru Yamane will be there and everything, together with a bunch of unknown swedes. I take it they're musicians or something. I'm gonna try and get a ticket ASAP. And yes, I live in Stockholm :)

This is gonna be soooo good, I hope  :D ..Maybe I can tape it somehow...

"The immensely popular and award winning videogame-series Castlevania has always been known for it´s superior music, which will be celebrated next year at the Stockholm Concerthall (Konserthuset), led by David Westerlund and featuring among others The Stockholm Youth Symphony orchestra, a rockband, singers and The Grand Organ.

This historic event will also be attended by series composer Michiru Yamane (Symphony of the Night, etc), who is flying in from Japan not only to attend the concert and meet with fans, but also to perform some of her own music live on stage!

The concert is arranged by Levande Musik Sverige in co-operation with David Westerlund, who is a musician and gamer, educated at the Royal College of Music, Sweden, where he also lectures about the subject of videogame-music. He is mainly known for the celebrated ”FINAL FANTASY-Piano and Vocal Collections on TOUR” which was performed during the summer of 2009."

Excerpts from the Program:
Dracula´s Castle (Symphony Of The Night)
Theme of Simon Belmont (Super Castlevania IV)
Chandeliers (Super Castlevania IV)
Requiem for the Gods (Symphony Of The Night)
Tragic Prince (Symphony Of The Night)
Clocktower (Aria of Sorrow)
The Sinking Old Sanctuary (Bloodlines)
Bloody Tears (Simon's Quest)
Opposing Bloodlines (Dracula X)
Lost Painting (Symphony Of The Night)
Wood Carving Partita (Symphony Of The Night)
Beginning (Castlevania III)
Calling from Heaven (Bloodlines)
Dance of Pales (Symphony Of The Night)
Dance of Illusions (Dracula X)
Vampire Killer (Castlevania)

Indeed a great tune!

I have never heard of the "Stockholm Youth Orchestra" though, but I hope they can at least..y'know..play! The "youth" part worries me. Also, "a rockband" is kinda vague. Last but not least, the tickets are friggin expensive. But I'm definitely attending, I've been trying to sneak in and see "Play! A Videogame Symphony" every time it has been in Stockholm, but it's always sold out. This time it's not. I guess there aren't that many Castlevania fans in Sweden after all. Good for me :)

I see I'll have a chance to meet personally some of You, great! :)

There is new information on concert site, like "The Making of Castlevania - The Concert" and "Message from Kinuyo Yamashita" videos:
http://www.castlevaniaconcert.com/index2_enn.html

Also very important information:
”The purpose with this concert is to deliver the best possible tribute to the music of the
Castlevania series, in a show created by fans for fans. Meanwhile, one of the worst disasters in
modern day has occurred in Haiti, which is why we will donate the surplus from the concert to
helping children in need in Haiti.”, says Erik Eklund, Producer at Levande Music Sverige.

You'll probably be also interested in interview with David Westerlund (originator of the concert):
http://www.gamemusic.net/show_news.php?id=71
http://www.gamemusic.net/interview.php?id=29&s=1

I'm one of three people who prepared questions for the interview. ;) Enjoy!

Hi everyone! For two hours I'm finally back at home (after hard night full of delays and waiting for transport xD)!

Together with my friends I prepared some interesting materials for You, so I still don't have time for sleep. :) I will do my best to show You everything during this week (I need to write a report and then it will be translated from Polish by other person for You). Be patient please! :)

@Straycat - The concert has its own official record but unfortunately I don't know what organizers will do with it.

I unfortunately couldn't go cause I have a really bad cold :(
The weather has been kinda awful lately (yes, I know - it's Sweden - but this is ridiculous even for Swedish winter) so I decided to not leave my apartement at all this weekend. I hope the concert was fantastic!

I wish You a quick recovery!

Indeed, the concert was wonderful. I'll write more about it soon. And about weather - good to know it's not normal in Sweden. On Saturday it was almost a freezing hell! xD And I've thought that winter in Poland can be harsh...

Wow, thanks so much for the videos, Rictrunks!

I'm completely floored that this was done by a youth orchestra...when I heard that, I was assuming something along the lines of our local high school symphonic bands, but this was so much better!  Seems like the production quality was very high.  I wish I could see something like this within driving distance, like Chicago, which would seem like one of the prime choices if this came to the US.  But this sort of thing never happens around here.  Why not?  I thought Castlevania had a much bigger fanbase in the US than anywhere else.

I really envy any of you that were able to attend.  And Shelby...a cold held you back from a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity like this?  :)

@Dark Nemesis - unfortunately I wasn't able to record entire concert and I don't have the Clock Tower from Aria of Sorrow. I hope someone else recorded this fragment.

For now I'm preparing the report, films and photo gallery.

@darkwzrd4 - I haven't heard about something like that.

Wathing those videos almost made me cry. I live 4 subway stations away from the concert hall, which is less than 10 minutes basically, and I still didn't go  :-[ But I was really sick so I couldn't have gone.
Ok so I'm gonna go and kill myself a little now KTHNXBYE.

The official page http://www.castlevaniaconcert.com/ (http://www.castlevaniaconcert.com/) says we can expect photos, audio and clips in the near future. I'd be surprised if they didn't record the whole thing. Also, there were probably some people in the audience recording it, even if they aren't posting at the CVDF. We should keep an eye on youtube in the following days/weeks I guess...

I saw my uploaded videos linked here through YouTube insight and thought I'd register to follow up on the Clock Tower request.
I didn't record a video of it, but I have the audio, so here it is along with the funky rendition of Wicked Child (including a nice Dr. Wily's Castle easter egg):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wjyb1CVKPvw

Enjoy it while you can, I won't leave this up for long out of courtesy to the people behind the concert, I already feel I'm pushing it with the videos (if any such person happens to read this, know that I'll gladly take the videos down at your request).
I do apologize for the quality, I know it's very poor, but I used what I had.

If you want the concert to be released in CD, DVD or at least downloadable content, please do a little thing and ask them for that in a simple feedback form on their website:

Hi,
thanks for all those videos, it makes a fantastic impression! I can only hope that a professional DVD or CD will be released. I have a quick question as well. Is it true that New Messiah was a solo piano arrangement? Is there anyone who recorded that one? I would be dying to listen to it. What did anyone of the visitors of the concert think of that one?
Many greetings

Quick info! If You haven't watched our videos yet then I suggest to do it quick - we was asked to delete the majority of them yesterday.

http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=4D31B5CE30608A97

Also - report will be ready soon. Sorry for so long waiting.

@Verdegrand - yes, there were two solo piano medleys from Belmont's Revenge (first one on electric piano) - New Messiah plus Praying Hands and Ripe Seeds plus Psycho Warrior. Both played by David Westerlund himself. They were great! :)

Sorry once again for so long waiting - report is at last ready in both Polish and English, and we have also for you two interviews (with Michiru Yamane and David Westerlund) plus a photo gallery. :)

I asked Jorge D. Fuentes for permission to post a little advertisement here (thank you for agreement). I haven't written about it on the forum before, but I'm an author of CastleKeeper's Chronicles - The World of Castlevania (www.castlevania.innerworld.pl). The site was available in Polish for few years now but since this weekend it finally has English news section. :) You will find it here:

http://castlevania.innerworld.pl/index.php?en=1&plik=index

There's also a list of translated articles. Those about the concert are actually first ones in English on the site. I hope a number of translations will increase with time. There's still a lot to do in both languages. ;)

English translation was prepared by www.gamemusic.net. You will also find there the same materials (without photo gallery, though). Michiru Yamane is now "Eastern Composer of the Month" there. :)

Materials were prepared with the invaluable help of Kamil Rojek (www.gamemusic.net) and Piotr "Zell" Serafin (www.innerworld.pl).

Thank you for attention and please enjoy articles. See you on Dungeon's forum and CastleKeeper! :)

I really, really wish I went. It looked like one hell of an event, mad props to everyone who made the concert possible. I hope they decide to perform another show one of these days and release a DVD.

Sorry for the bump, but it's been 3 years since the concert happened and no one ever bothered releasing a DVD of it. Why was this the case? Because Konami didn't allow it? Because David Westerlund didn't have the means? This seems like the missed opportunity of the century. Nintendo has an orchestra touring around North America playing songs from The Legend of Zelda for the second time. They wouldn't do this out of pure fanservice, they have to be making money. Something similar at a smaller scale for Castlevania would probably have been very profitable.

Even if that's too much of a time and money investment, selling the recording at a good quality on iTunes or even kickstarting a physical print would have still made Konami and the people involved a profit. I really want to know what happened because from a financial standpoint it doesn't make sense, and as a fan I would love to have this to watch at 1080p with good audio quality on my TV.

I am also bothered that even though the concert was recorded (officially), they keep the recording for themselves. They should release it in any way possible they can find, for the fans. I really want to see it and enjoy it. Let`s try to do something about it!

1.Does anyone have an unofficial recording? That would be the easiest way to get it, even though not perfect.
2. Shall we write to David Westerlund?

Life is too short to let this concert recording not be enjoyed by fans each and every minute!

I heard they lack the rights to release the recordings, expect for a few tracks you can find on YouTube, because all the other were removed by Konami (for example: I remember seeing the AoS Clock Tower track, but it was removed).

Then in that case we should totally write David Westerlund to kickstart a DVD release. I bet plenty of Castlevania fans would dump some good cash to see this happen. Maybe back in 2010 crowdfunding wasn't an option but today I can see this happening.

I'd vouch for that....

Money is not the only thing, Konami may just simply not want to have a CV concert DVD.

I think they're not too fond of live performances of CV music. Except the 2 VGL albums, and the Play! one, I think that's pretty much it. They even removed a track from The Greatest VGM Vol.2 (a CV orchestral suite).
