This is nothing new in society, a group of otaku fans in some basement in Japan making a videogame knockoff of their favorite series. In fact, a good portion of Otaku sales go to such products each year, and it's evolved from just those basement dwelling fans to full blown companies devoted to such productions. Close to 50% in Japan. Well, this one caught my eye. I Have no idea if any of you have even come by this, but since I searched the forums and no traces of such topics have popped up... well so far in this Incarnation of the forums. I've decided to provide a few links and images to one of the better high quality Castlevania Dojins out there.
The Title of this particular one is "Koumajou Densetsu Scarlet Symphony" if I'm not mistaken. It's related to a series of Touhou games.

Intro posted on youtube.

Demo Gameplay. If you noticed, the music is a vaguely corrupted form of castlevania tunes in some parts. Not only that but the animation thus far has looked pretty damn fluid.

More gameplay, this time showcasing the plot. You'll notice the odd, yet interesting artwork.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fwcq86x_Ea8&feature=related
posted a third one, just to showcase and point out that there us a lack of big monstrous bosses, but the battles themselves seem very original and challenging.

Forgive me if I may of brought up some old topic, but I haven't visited here in almost a decade.
Edit Note: Just wanted to point out. I actualy found the OST for the game. Pretty fantastic. Dunno what I should do with it here. Are we even allowed relay such ost's in the forums?
-
Ah yes. I remember this game. I was actually looking at vids on 'tube yesterday so it's ironic you'd suddendly make a topic 'bout it!
I'm going to soon download this & give it a try, as the animations and gameplay are extremely similar to cv.
-
it's a small world. So I guess it's coincidental. PM me if you'd like the OST link.
-
I'd like to get the full game link. :)

me as well

that I don't have. Though I could look for it. Will need a little time though.
-
Have the game here. Decided to post the OST as well since no one stated that I can't put it up. Though Castlevania Dungeon may want to consider making an article about the game and OST.

If there are any problems, please do tell me. I'll try my best to help. Also, if you want a good program to burn but don't have one readily on your PC, I suggest you try CDBurnerXP. It's free and will do the job.
-
Wow, I love Touhou and Castlevania so I can't wait to try this out - it's like my 2 favourite game series combined. The soundtrack is great.
-
Looks kind of cool. Too bad that I can neither read or understand Japanese.
-
I couldn't open the ISO file after I downloaded it. It's similar to another file that I was able to open but could not play the game cause it wouldn't load. talk about your computer's binary excuses.
-X
-
If that is the case and it can't be loaded up via a CD, then I suggest you try it with Alcohol, Free version will run ISO's. Oh and I mean Alcohol as in the program, not the beverage/rubbing liquid.
-
yeah I wouldnt even bother tryin to burn it unless you just wanna keep a hard copy of it for whatever reason... I just use some virtual drive program like Alcohol 120 or Daemon Tools
-
dang, can't get it to work...
some msg comes up and it doesn't work.
-
Idk, it seems to represent everything I find wrong with CV these days...
-
I wrote a bit about this on the HG101 blog:
http://blog.hardcoregaming101.net/2009/08/koumajou-densetsu-scarlet-symphony.html
In summary - it's not fantastic.
After I wrote this the developers started patching stuff. I THINK they actually may have enabled English text in one of the patches too but I haven't tried it.
-
was looking around for a patch to post here. I've had no luck thus far. Couldn't read the official sites support either. For some reason it doesn't display kanji. Perhaps a result of explorers limitations.
-
There's a bunch of patches here:

They're at the bottom. If you're installing it new, you probably want this one:

Level design is a bit better, but it's not particularly interesting. At least it seems to be more fluid. Combat looks solid, and not as much need for flight, hopefully. That's good.
I also have to admit it looks to have very nice flow to the level design at least. And I appreciate that the jump kick mechanic has actual use unlike Castlevanias, helps quicken the pacing too.
-
scarlet symph 2 looks awesome, the animation is superb.

Looks pretty! Like an IGA game!
...Needs platforms... Like an IGA game...
-
I played the first one and was a great homage to Castlevania (sound and gameplay wise). The second one is looking better. So I'll play it too.
-
The modular/segmented enemies look so much better than any of the official Castlevania ones. The bullet hell attack patterns from the bosses also look less frustrating and there seems to be a lot more variety in environment shape and design!
-
So the girl now has a Ritcher moment. I really like the ending of the other one
-
oh, wasn't even aware of this. i'm digging it. Also, I am certainly going to pick up the OST for this one too like I did the first.
I'm still baffled why we aren't making actual 2D castlevania games on consoles, but this is at least something to keep us happy until we do. I seriously drooled when I saw that extremely well animated Giant Golem with rich pixel and texture details. wow...
-
It looks like quite a step up from the previous entry. I like the golem and 3D stages.
-
As much as I hate Touhou, I have to admit, that game looks FANTASTIC. As good, if not better than, some of the "official" games out there, in fact! :o

Why do you hate Touhou?
Anywho, it looks fantastic, but I bet the game's pretty boring to play. That's how the first was... it felt so boring playing it.
-
Personally I think this game was a bit boring - levels were more or less the same. However clever enemies placement (and unresponsive controls) kept difficulty of this game at pretty high rate. And levels wasn't so long to induce boredom that much. Also boss fights were intense, so they weren't boring at all. :)

I see it *everywhere.* It wouldn't annoy me so much if I didn't see it or hear about it almost everywhere I go these days ~_~ Then again, maybe I should just find some nuu places to go...):T
-
Wow... That's like watching Touhou's version of SotN. and not just because of the Touhou exorcist hunter from the first game sitting on the stone seat in the colossium.

As much as I hate Touhou
As weaboo as you are, I cannot imagine how this is possible.
-
Even a weeaboo can get sick of seeing the same thing over and over, no matter how Japanesey it is. XD
-
There is new video of Scarlet Symphony 2 that introduce seiyus, new music tracks and new gameplay footage. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yvvoBec_65U#ws)
Seems game will have something akin to vocal remix of the Dance of Illusions.

Koumajou Densetsu 2: Stranger's Requiem was released 30 december. I already played it and want to give a brief summary of the game.
Don't expect this game to be a great departure for the first one. It does improve many things that were done badly in the first one, however fundamentally it is the same game.
Main character:
Controls are much better. Sakuya generally faster than Reimu was in the first game. It's much easier to turn around. Controls are much more responsive than in the first KD. However, she doesn't have slide. Instead of this she has some sort of backdash move, like Alucard, but I always found this move useless. Slide could have been VERY useful in some of the levels. Weapons reach is smaller, but hitbox stiil a bit ahead of the end of the knife, so like in the first game you can kill some enemies without actually touching them with the weapon.
Flight now is limited by energy bar, so you will use jump more often. However there is enough energy to fly over some some platforms, where you seemingly suppose to fight enemies, like in usual Castlevania. Limited flight is quite a bad idea, because during boss fights it is almost impossible to stay on the ground for the whole time.
The same energy bar you can use to execute special move (Up + Attack). This special move looks like crissaegrim attack however it does very small damage. You always use this move while flying.
Instead of two summons in the first game, you have seven. Two subweapons and five helpers / summons. You start the game with only two subweapons - knife (Castlevania dagger) and stopwatch. You acquire helpers throughout the game up to the next to the last level. All of them act like Castlevania subweapons, except for the last one which acts more like item crash form Rondo, clearing the whole screen from enemies. Those summons include:
Mei Ling = Axe subweapon,
Alice (she throws four dolls with explosive) = Holy Water,
Patchoulli (creates shield from five magic symbols around Sakuya) = Bible subweapon (Rondo),
Reimu (throws Yin Yang ball that acts like boumerang) = cross-boumerang,
Flandre (creates lasers that covers whole screen, like her attack in the first game). Very useful to damage some bosses.
Levels:
All levels in the game, except for the third and the last levels are remakes / remixes of the levels from the first game. They are not copypasted, but they overall structure and backgrounds will be VERY familliar, if you played first KD. All levels now done in complete 3D, though it doesn't look like that at the first glance. Sometimes in closed area it will look like like you are actually in some 3D cylindrical room. The last level with giant treen growing right through the ruined tower is very impressive.
Enemies:
Unlike the first game there are much more different enemies in this one. However big multisegmented enemies are rarity. They will appear only three times throughout the game. Allmost all enemies from the first game returned, but most of them become faster, with more lives and they deal more damage. New enemies are also beastly - including giant dog (horse?) skeletons on fire and flying armors with wings. These armors create energy wave, that cover half of the screen. There are also two different king of demons - small imps that shooting fire in front of them and giant demons - they shoot fire in three directions. In the last level there are trees with fairies growing out of them. Fairies can shoot projectiles and trees try to punch with they giant hands. Overall in enemies department this game is big improvement over the first.
Bosses:
Almost all of them, except for the very last bosses are easier than in the first game. Last bosses are nightmarish though. In the final battle last boss have some sort of monster form, based on Dracula's form in the Symphony of the Night. But she is much more dangerous.
Music:
Quite a let down. I loves soundtrack of the firts game, since it succesfully crossed some Castlevania and Touhou melodies. In the second game most of the music is either remixes of the themes from the first game (those tracks are good, but not better than orginals from the first KD) or something electronic that just sounds strange. The best track in this game (and I think possibly the best in both games) is the final boss battle theme (The Rose-killing Carmilla (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3SDxoXSSEw#)). It definitely fits the final battle much better than the song in the first game.
Other:
The game doesn't have extra level yet. Possibly, like in the case with the first KD it will be added through with pacth. Right now after completing game you will gain access to the OMAKE menu, where you can listen four funny converastions between characters. Since the game right now is only have japanese text it's not much use.
Overall KD2 is a very good game, and I recommend it to everyone, who want to play in a good Castlevania clone. Howver I think it's a more detached from Castlevania than the first oneand more the game with it's own spirit. Maybe because in the first game you played as Belmont-like protagonist.
-
That sounds pretty cool, sumac. I might check it out sometime :) Who knows, maybe it'll actually get me to like Touhou. XD

Patch 1.02 for Koumajou Densetsu 2 released!! (http://aja-games.com/aja_blog/?p=614)
It adds new extra level "Phantasm" and (non-working yet) option to ebable English text in dialogues.
As in the first game extra level consists from small parts of the other levels in the game. It's shorter than extra level in the first part, but expectedly tenfold harder than all other levels in the game. It's feature only four boss battles: with three Mischevious Fairies (Sunny Milk, Luna Child and Star Sapphire - each one have small amount of life, but game displays one lifebar for all three of them), Chen, Ran Yakumo and Yukari Yakumo. Yukari is actually harder than Flandre in the first game.
Phantasm also have new enemies and upgarded version of the old ones. There is one place with a good platforming in the begining of the level. Also in this level you have new summon / subweapon - Remillia Scarlet.
There is also some gltiches - for example in the battle with three fairies, they sometimes become invicible (though it could be part of they attack) and if you kill one of the fairies (I think Luna Child) first, she wiil not die, but become invincible for your attacks until you kill another fairy.
Also this patch adds some new graphical effects. Developers promised to upload new patch, for enabling english text in the game, to the site in a few days.

I'd be more enthused about this game if half the enemies weren't anime maids.
It does look very cool, though.
-
I despise bullet hell games, on the first occasion I'll send a terminator back in time to deal with it.
-

There are not so many maid enemies in this game. Anyway less then in the first KD.

You have bad history with those games I assume? Bad player? ;D

No, I think that degrading a whole game into a dodge bullet fix is crap.

No, I think that degrading a whole game into a dodge bullet fix is crap.
Why degrading?
It's genre.
It's like saying that the whole game devoted to racing is stupid, because it's all about racing in a closed circles and boring samey stuff.

"Degraded" because of most of the features of the original genre have atrophied, you're left with a limited experience. Not "pure" cause this was supposed to be a shoot'em up, not a dodge'em up. A more fitting comparison would be a racism game completely about switching gears: yeah you're still in a racing car and it's very hard to get it always right, but we were supposed to go driving actually.

Original game? What original game?
Shooters as far as I know began from simple games. With the time they've got elaborated. Smups are one of this elaborations - they are quite sophisticated with they own systems and gameplay formulas. They are definitely not degrading anything. In shmupas you need to think as fast as move. So it's very far form degradation of the genre or anything.
would be a racism game
I am afraid to ask, but what is a "racism" game? ::)
