Title: I love Castlevania... but it could be SO MUCH COOLER
Post by: DingusBelmondo on April 16, 2010, 10:25:21 PM
Now im not saying Castlevania doesn't have it's fair share of these moments, but i always find myself super engrossed in games that have "moments", or preset events that break the pace of the game. Example, the Behemoth and Talos in Rondo... The rotating room in CVIV, but these aren't as good as they could be. In Metroid Fusion, I felt legit suspense when the SA-X was hunting me down. I had to run from an enemy i couldn't kill, i had to hide from it. Even little cutscenes. imagine at the end of a level, you are captured, you wake up in an enemies base, you get out, do a stage where you zip line with your whip down a mountain, ride a horse drawn carriage through the woods, run through a castle fast enough as it falls into lava, have an interlude where death taunts you, have skeletons appear dragging a caged beast, fight the beast as a mini boss, use dynamite to explode a passage way where you fall down an aquaduct at highspeed into and underwater cavern. KEEPIN' IT FRESH YO.

Konami will never make stories/games as cool as the fans can make them... given the right resources, of course

Um... What? Konami are one of my favorite developers. No fans could make CV games as cool as most CV and Contra games. As for story? The Silent Hill series, particularly 2 (and excluding Homecoming...yeesh). Those all have really good stories.

Well.. didn't mean to offend you sir, but there's a few hacks out there that I think could've been awesome "official" games, almost on par with what Konami can do.

Not that I'm offended, I just find what you're saying kind of...well, no, really absurd.

That's okay. I don't expect everyone to agree with me.

While I love the series, it could be a little more suspenseful.  The games could also use a few more plot twists.

I did have a dream years ago (Nerd, I know  ;D).. I was REALLY into Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, and my dream was essentially that game at first, but then morphed into something that looked just like a dark and gothic chapel รก la Castlevania. In the dream I was playing as Belmont, running through a long hallway with huge stained glass windows and candles everywhere. The place was was shaking and crumbling, and parts of it was engulfed in flames. Not far behind me was Death, furiously chasing me and throwing scythes at me. The floor collapsed and I had to use my whip to swing across gaps while still being chased by Death. Next thing I remember I was hanging from a gigantic chandellier and was hit by a schyte and then plunging to my death, screaming in agony. That was a moment. And no quick time events either :D

I guess since i already made this somewhat pointless thread we may as well appreciate what we've got...

.Waterfall in SCVIV
.Gergoth breaks the floor
.Anytime death taunts you
.Raft in DXC
.The Ferryman
.Balore squashes the bat
.Dude standing in the background in rondo
.the boulder race in Harmony
.the chandelier hop in SCIV

Let's not forgot that one time in CV64 when you had to escape from the crumbling Keep...!

While they might not have been as suspensful as those almighty SA-X moments, there've been some pretty sweet pre-battle preludes; Rondo was really good for that.  The Grim Reaper's entrance in Super IV was grand.  I always liked how the Angel Mummy bros (sisses?) flicked open their switchblade vertebrae before the skirmish.  :]

...ey, and let's not forget the reveal of that giant skeleton five minutes into 64!  I was never a huge fan of that half-finished game, but if you think about it, it's got quite a few of those moments.  Like when Bullface wakes up after the (@#^&(^@(@!!!) Nitro Run!

What about in Aria of Sorrow, just before you fight Legion?
All those creepy men walking in the same direction... I knew something really bad was up ahead. It was a nice way to build up some tension before the boss fight.

Completely forgot about that. Good call.

Castlevania would be so much better if it had more Marias and less Jericho developers.

Really? I think CVIV is the game that has the most moments like that. The chandalier room, the rotating room, the Mode 7 room...It was so awesome...

Anyone mentioned the chainsaw freak from CV64/Legacy of Darkness?

The Colored out Chaos Realm in AoS. Totally awesome

In AoS, shortly after Headhunter, there is a candle that looks like a small penis. IGA, you motherf*cking prankster. Just for my dairy dosage of LOLs.

In DoS, the Abyss. Just pure epic awesomeness.
