i got castlevania recently and ive had it for a little over a week and i've already managed to get to death (and with only 2 bars of health left, died :'() but what my question is, is since ive only had it for such a short time, does this mean that i have skill for this game or am i just stupid for thinking it??

Well, how many other nintendo-era games have you beat in less than a week?

Getting up to Death, let alone beating him is definitely one of the most difficult aspects of the original Castlevania game for the Nintendo Entertainment System. If you were able to get past the annoying Medusa Heads and Axe Armors that, in my opinion, is quite an accomplishment for someone who is new to the original Castlevania game. ;)

By the way, an easy way to defeat Death is to corner him on one of the ledges and throw Holy Water at it continuously while he is extremely close to it. It basically freezes him in place and his health just drains away. It is kind of a cheap way to beat him, but it definitely works well. Please be sure to report back and let us know when you have beaten the game. :D

well, do you want a cookie? I mean, good for you, it's a very tough game, but this seems like a rhetorical question.

Skill? What, like some god-given natural talent for Castlevania games?

For games that are static in thier gameplay mechanics and level layouts, memorization and knowledge of exploits seem to take precedence over whatever "skill" may be involved. This holds especially true for a game as basic as the first Castlevania.

I suppose some slight intrinsic skill is involved when it comes to reflexes and hand-eye coordination, but again, the game rewards memorization and the like above all else.

Playing Castlevania is not easy in the way you thinking of, you will gradually realize that you need to master different techniques to play it well. Keeping it up dude.

When I played through (and beat) CastleVania last week, I meant to reach Reapie with a Battle Axe arsenal, but somehow got nailed and had to settle for the Boomerangness.  Bouncing off the walls, knocking out blades, and letting those sticks fly was about ten seconds of absolute fun!  Were you playing aggressively or trying not to get hurt?

(Oh, and I learned that two direct blows to the head with an Axe can kill an Axe Man!!!)

I wouldn't call it skill till you can repeatedly reach the area that you did, or can repeatedly beat the game within 0-2 continues, or can beat the game within 1-2 lives (I used to be able to do that, can't do it now as I'm rusty). Sounds like beginners luck, but if you can reach the Reap multiple times on different playthroughs, hats off to you.

There definately IS skill involved. Even though a lot of the early CV games are memorization, remembering what enemies attack and when/how, etc, you still have to have the reflexes and character-positioning ability to combat them. Those things DO take skill.

It took me forever to beat CV1 and CV3. Truth be told, I had beaten MANY other CV games before those two. Memorization and rhythm are one thing, but it does take some skill to master them. Even though the early CV's are the KINGS of controller-whipping tantrums, keep playing...practice makes perfect as they say.

From my experience, having madd CV skillz makes the game's ass more fun to kick.

Oh, and also...THE BOMB AFFECTS DRACULA'S SECOND FORM?!?!?!
